Just an fyi that I should've mentioned in the Discussion tab; as an Investigator, I automatically add +1d6 to all knowledge checks, as well as to linguisitics and spellcraft without expending inspiration points...but it didn't really matter in this case...

Witch's Winter Holiday

@Flyn - Noted; I'll try to remember next time!

Flora sends a ball of ice hurtling at the more exposed giant, striking it squarely in its massive chest. As the frozen water rapidly thaws and re-freezes, she tries to brush it off...

Blue Reflex vs DC 17: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15

...but only succeeds in pushing the slush down to her legs before it becomes solid again. Flyn takes advantage of the giant's predicament by raining down a storm of arrows, one of which strikes her in the eye! Lissa tries to follow up with a blast of water, but only knocks down a sickly-looking tree while Kramac, Zagan, and Eorsten prepare themselves.

The entangled giant roars in frustration, and even from this distance Flora can see her massive muscles straining against the imprisoning ice...

Strength check vs DC 17: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (11) + 11 = 22

...and with a massive crack, she breaks free and strides behind a mass of trees. Her companion does likewise, the trees quaking from his heavy footsteps.

Venture-Captain Drandle Dreng emerges from the jungle, addressing the scouts. “Sometimes, there is great power to going unnoticed. Especially when you’re walking into dangerous territory. Not everyone in the big, obvious group of Pathfinders on the front lines understands the value of subtlety. Let’s make sure that they know what they’re walking into, so they are ready to act fast when danger strikes.” Players, you can send your Scout Aid Characters on this mission.

That being said, any scout characters who want to attempt to help can do so in the Discussion thread (rules to be posted there shortly). They're at a reduced risk in doing so (since we already know the mission was a success), and they'll be eligible for a boon based on their participation.

@Kramac, charging wouldn't be possible due to the cover provided by the trees.

Also, @Kramac, giant vultures normally have only a 5 ft reach. Does Beaky have something to change that?

Eorsten charges through the poisonous jungle, and the giant takes advantage of his approach to swings his massive scythe...

Red Scythe vs Eorsten AC 23: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (16) + 20 = 36
Slashing damage: 2d6 + 16 ⇒ (6, 3) + 16 = 25

...and the paladin feels his strength ebb from the blade's chill touch even as the giant laughs and steps back from the oversized axe Eorsten wields. Flora's frosty spear goes skyward, as do two of Flyn's arrows before the third finally strikes the giant in the shoulder. Kramac tries to get closer, but his lance catches on a dripping tree branch and he nearly drops the weapon before it is dislodged. Zagan tries to help, but his own arrows only dislodge a few sickly leaves from the trees. Lissa's whip crashes into the giant's armor, but is not strong enough to do more than get him wet.

To clarify: Lissa's attack missed due to cover.

The giant roars in delight and swings his scythe in broad arcs at Eorsten - but Beaky tries his best to distract him!

Red Scythe vs Eorsten Bodyguard AC 25: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (3) + 20 = 23
Slashing damage: 2d6 + 16 ⇒ (6, 2) + 16 = 24

Red Scythe vs Eorsten Bodyguard AC 25: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (5) + 15 = 20
Slashing damage: 2d6 + 16 ⇒ (6, 5) + 16 = 27

Beaky bravely pecks the blade away as it rushes towards the human's head, beak pinging against the chill metal and knocking the giant back enough that his followup swing swishes through the air in front of Eorsten's face.

Beak is actually a Yolubilis Heron, not a vulture. I was always under the impression that animal companions adhere to the same template as their base animal in terms of reach. The heron (stats here) is 15 feet in size with 15 foot reach, so while not explicitly stated from my understanding of the rules, he would have 10 foot reach to match his as well. If you have a different understanding please let me know.

Witch's Winter Holiday

@Kramac - that works for me. I take it you own the appropriate AP? I only ask because it's not a common rulebook. Unfortunately, Beaky did not hit due to not being able to charge through the cover/difficult terrain provided by the trees.

**OVERSEER ANNOUNCEMENT**

Shevar Besnik steps forward, his clothing ripped but a smile on his face. “Pathfinders! We’re almost to... well, the crater where Gallowspire once stood. Be sure you cut down any opposition; we don’t want them creeping down after us or blocking our exit!” Shevar raises a weapon and charges into battle.

With a final surge, the expeditionary force of Pathfinders finishes off the last of its foes. Shevar Besnik nods to Ollysta Zadrian, and the two lead the expedition to the edge of a massive crater. The crater’s sides are smooth and glassy, as if melted by an immense heat. Several passageways extend from the sides of the crater, many of them nearly blocked by tons of fallen earth. Ollysta Zadrian narrows her eyes and points at the bottom with her sword. “That way leads to the Catacombs, and beyond it the wards set up by the Whispering Tyrant. Steel yourselves,” she says, sheathing her weapon.

GMs, please begin part 3.

Witch's Winter Holiday

The expedition reaches the bottom of the crater and moves into the passageway beyond, where Ollysta Zadrian stands in a half-collapsed chamber. A ball of light shines brightly in her hand, although its power seems dimmed by the oppressive atmosphere of the room. The walls are constructed entirely from the bones of thousands of humanoid creatures, fused together with unknown power. “Pathfinders, it is time to make our way to the wards and move beyond them," the paladin instructs. "Be cautious, and may the gods watch over you."

The Pathfinders enter the desecrated halls, where dull black ribbons snake through the stones and bones forming the walls and floor like necrotic veins. The darkness feels like it is watching the invaders, pressing back against their attempts to bring light to the catacombs.

What are we doing for light sources or other means of vision? Non-magical light is ineffective and magical light sources have their radius halved.

The dark halls eventually open to a larger room, where numerous severed heads of a variety of magical creatures and beings writhe in a mockery of life. The Pathfinders quickly discover that they are not alone though as a large construct whirs to life, accompanied by what looks like an animated mud puddle.

GM - Kramac also adds his wisdom to rolls to identify creatures (+3). Sorry for not mentioning it sooner.

Kramac spurs beak to action, who rises into the air, reaching the ceiling before swooping back down to allow Kramac to attack the construct. Kramac will opt to bash the creature with his adamantine cestus rather than his sword.

After striking, Kramac will feign slipping in the saddle, offering the Golem an opening to strike the half-orc.

Kramac will activate Broken Wing Gambit - the Golem gets +2 to hit and damage on its first attack as Kramac presents an apparent opening, but if it does so, Beak gets an AoO, which then generates one for Kramac from Paired Opportunist

AoOs if Kramac is attacked by the construct:

Kramac's Attack: Outflank, Heroism, Power Attack, Higher Ground, Paired Opportunist: 1d20 + 15 + 4 + 2 - 3 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 15 + 4 + 2 - 3 + 1 + 4 = 37

Kramac's AC vs the Golem's first attack will likely be 31 (+2 from Bodyguard, -2 from Broken Wing Gambit), 33 vs. attacks 2 and 3 and 31 vs. all other attacks.

There is 10 feet of illumination around beak ( 1 square on each side), with another 10 feet of dim illumination (20% miss chance I believe, 2 and 3 squares out from Beak)

I'm assuming everyone is traveling with weapons out - no need to draw them unless you're swapping on the fly.

@Kramac - Almost - the light spell only provides normal light within 5 ft and dim light 5 ft beyond that, as both are halved by the oppressive gloom. It stinks. You are correct - thanks for the breakdown!

Whoops, @Eorsten - Unfortunately Blue has to take its turn before you can.

As Kramac's fist punches a small hole in the construct, fluid sprays out...

What kind: 1d4 ⇒ 2

...that chills the half-orc's hand even through the metal cestus. Flora's blast batters the construct, but its rigid metal frame shatters the point of the wooden spear and dampens its effect. Flyn's arrows follow after, flying at the barely-visible blob next to the construct and landing with soft plops. Lissa tries to follow up with her own watery missile, but it splashes somewhere in the darkness instead.

Red Reflex vs DC 24: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25

Zagan Will, Aura of Courage: 1d20 + 17 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 17 + 4 = 30

...but Eorsten's courage gives the Pathfinders the grit to ignore the otherworldly screams - though the roiling wall remains, blocking their way into the room.

Flyn grimaces. ”It’s a Wall of Ectoplasm...we can’t go through it...if we punch a hole, it just seals itself...”

He looks up. ”We’ll have to go over it...”

Witch's Winter Holiday

Unfortunately, @Eorsten cannot charge at Blue due to both the wall and Lissa blocking his path. Redirecting attack to wall.

Eorsten cuts a large hole in the thick green wall, but the quickly closes with a shlurp as mucusy substance is pulled from the outer edges. Meanwhile, the construct steps away from Kramac and Beaky - though the bird instinctively flaps closer - before swinging a massive arm tipped with an oversized syringe at the half-orc. Both Kramac and Beaky lash out, and as the heron rips the offending arm off Kramac punches the golem in what passes for its face.

Random: 2d4 ⇒ (3, 1) = 4

Beaky gets a small shock for his trouble and Kramac's hand stings from an acidic bite, but the construct topples and falls to the ground in a heap of broken parts and oozing liquid.
