I wonder if the lightsabers will have lensflares.

It'll be an unwatchable lens-flare-orgy with dialog heard from characters no one can see and some pretty explosions. ;) j/k... mostly

Please, some respect for the man who was charged with both winning back and bringing new Star Wars fans to the fold with The Force Awakens, all the while sneaking in a scene where E.T. is getting roasted over an open flame.

For the record, I liked the last Star Trek movie he did (it wasn't great, but it wasn't an old Star Trek with reverse Spock and Kirk).

It's a low bar to step over compared to The Phantom Menace.

Force Awakens was the come back to SW episode. I can give some leeway for the heavy derivation. I hope that the saga takes its own direction from here on out though. If the second film of this new saga isn't very good story wise, I don't think the third will be good no matter who directs it.

Yes. TFA was terrible, and while the Prequels have some issues, I still rewatch them and enjoy it.

TFA just trashed the setting. The story would be forgettable if it where not a s!&#ty remake of a great one. The characters are boring. Especially Rey, who is just better at everything than everyone, just because. And how dare you grab my arm when you spot danger and want to keep me safe! Oh the outrage!

Even the antagonists are meh, barring maybe Rey falling to the dark side, effectively retconning out of existence the entire New Order thing, Ren, and Snoke and becomming the big bad. Better if that all happens in the openning scroll.

Hearing that, after TFA, they are potentialy allowing JJ to touch the setting is genuinely depressing.

People are to hard on the prequels I was like 13 or something for episode 1 so I was an easier audience then and I expected less from movies so I'll give you guys that but the spectacle was entertaining and hadn't seen anything like the Darth maul fight or pod racing scenes before. Episode 2 had the yoda v dooku and then 3 had a ton of awesome fight scenes and choreography. The acting just needed a lot of work and a few other odds and ends. really however I could see young Vader as a bit whiny. They could of used a better actor granted. You don't just go to uber jedi to child killing sith without some emotional discourse.

It was all still way way better the Elektra movie.

I was impressed by the director's/writers' complete lack of comprehension of basic elements like 'time' and 'distance.'

But I largely agree with others here- it's a bland remake. Bringing Abrams back is a weird choice.

@Vidmaster7- you need to watch more films, apparently. Most of the elements you like are from other things. Like the podrace is a drawn out and somnambulant copy of the Ben Hur chariot race, and the fight scenes might as well be stock footage for how uninspired and derivative they are.

'The acting just needed a lot of work' is a terrible thing to say about a movie. Its along the lines of 'if only a book's author was better with words'

I liked TFA. It would have been nice if they had merely disabled the New Death Star instead of it blowing up just like the other two.

OTOH they didn't kill off every single major character like they did in

I think the biggest problems with the prequels (aside from nobody there to tell George "NO!" a few dozen times) was having people act in a near total blue-screen environment, with few relevant props or stand-ins to help with dialog.

Oh look, it's again my time to defend Force Awakens as a good movie!

Oh how I missed this. Not.

Force Awakens was a good movie. I prefer it highly over Rogue One. Wow, that's a very 'haters gotta hate' sort of argument. Just dismissing criticism with an absurdly simplified tangent doesn't make for an effective 'defense.'

If you don't want to bother defending a film- don't. You aren't going to change minds with an absurd comic that misses the point of criticism.

Dark Archive Vendor - Fantasiapelit Tampere

4 people marked this as a favorite.

I don't think it really doesn't, since most of the criticism is based on how similar those movies are, and I think they are missing the point of Force Awakens. Because that is a criticism based on the surface elements- same plot (it really isn't) same themes, same overarching structure.

What people seem to overlook every time is great acting with instant chemistry between the main characters, clever subversion of the tempting of the dark side, villain who is more interesting after he puts away the helmet and we see his very human face, character development for the old characters based on the state of the world and JJ Abrams doing his darnest to fix the mistakes of prequels (sorry, prequel fans, no hard feelings) in how light & dark side are equated in metaphysical level. Rey is awesome (who's actions make sense, and she is just as mary sue as Luke was), Finn is awesome (one of my favorite protagonists ever) and Poe is awesome (Oscar Isaacs is a living legend). Best fight scenes of the entire series, (lightsaber melee with only one lightsaber YES), tragic ending with weight and gravitas because they earn it by build up, and understandable and powerful storytelling in many parts without speaking a word.

So yes. Force Awakens is more than just plot structure of New Hope. It is wholly it's own story, and very unique one on that when one looks deeper than just on the base level.

Sovereign Court

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Rey is a Mary Sue, a textbook example. And it is annoying. You don't have to make a female protagonist a mary sue to make her interesting or strong.
Finn is OK, I guess, pretty forgettable.
Poe doesn't have enough screen time.
Han Solo is there just for the paycheck and to finally get his wish he's been wishing for 30+ years.

What great chemistry? What great acting?

And yeah, sorry if you take pacing, desert planets, planet destroyers and more. which was the theme of the first film, you are decidedly lazy and playing it safe.

so do the "it's just like episode iv!" comments. There is a real difference between criticism and bellyaching, and that argument crossed the line a few miles back.

Aside from Force-pulling a lightsaber, what did Rey do in TFA that Luke, Leia or Anakin didn't pull off in their own first movies?

Well, as far as we see, she does it all without any training. Without even what little instruction Luke got from Ben or the practice he had shooting womp rats.

OTOH, there were definitely hints she had repressed early training.

And piloting skill appears to be genetic in the Star Wars universe anyway :)

Kalshane wrote:

Mind tricks, for one. And winning a lightsaber battle. It's been a while since I saw TFA but didn't Rey also have some visions?

Luke didn't do TK or visions until ESB and mind tricks until RotJ. Anakin didn't do anything Force related except piloting until AotC and minor card tricks.
Leia didn't do anything Force related in the movies

Rey wins the lightsaber battle for one very simple reason:

Kylo never wanted to kill or hurt her.

He does not attack straight at her first, just hits around her, trying to scare her. Why? Because he wants Rey to his side, not to the side where all the corpses are. And when he can't force her to change sides, Kylo get's scared, where as Rey- who has been shown to be powerful in force- picks the hate she feels for Kylo right up. Tables have been turned- Rey wants to kill Kylo Ren, Kylo Ren is terrified beyond reason because he does not want to die. All of his focus is on survival, which includess...

....having a massive hole in his abdomen, and half of his time goes to, you know, keeping his intestines in. That is why he punches his own wound- to feel pain, which amplifies his force-using and keeps his guts where they are supposed to be- barely.

(video I mentioned earlier and that I have been referencing.)

4 people marked this as a favorite.

I think it is perfectly reasonable to like characters like Rey, Poe, Finn, BB-8, and even Kylo and still be critical of the film. There are elements that make it good and elements that make it not good. For me, the derivative stuff hurt the film overall, but I understand why it was present.

That said, this is just stupid.

The comics you linked is hardly a compelling argument. The Force Awakens is almost the exact same Story as A New Hope, and the parts of it that aren't are a mix of things very strongly inspired by bits and pieces of the other Star Wars movies. Abrahams himself freely admits it. The Force Awakens was the first (and so far only) movie in the series that tried to do nothing new.

As for me? I don't like Abrahams. He's unlikely to deliver a complete dud but is extremely likely to deliver something shallow and uninteresting that is closer to an action movie than a SF movie. But we'll see.

Except Kylo Ren, Phasma, Rey, Finn, Maz Kanata, that ending battle between Kylo & Rey, both long silent parts with Rey in the beginning and at the end, land fights with X-Wings, melee fight with where lightsaber does not instawin but loses, "tempting of the light side" idea as something bad guy is afraid of, weaponized planet (not build fake moons, w e a p o n i z e d p l a n e t ) someone freezing a laser bolt in midair instead of just blocking/deflecting....

Plot structure is similar to New Hope. I'm not denying that. But to say FA tried NOTHING NEW is just not paying attention to the film.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

There are a lot of basic similarities, but it does very different things with them. It's almost taking the basic structure and showing that you can tell a completely different story inside the same structure. Kylo is like vader on the surface, except completely different. Rey and Leia are like Luke and Leia, except all mixed up differently and playing different roles.
