Oil of Magic Missle?

Currently working on a brewmaster when I realized something about brew potion. The only limitation on it is that the potion has to be able to target one or more creatures/objects.

There are two things you can make with brew potion as well, Potions and Oils. Potions being something internal and Oils being external.

So it seems to me that you could make an oil of Magic Missile which targets up to five creatures.

Where am I wrong though?

It would target whoever you oiled up, not 5 other creatures.

The spell must be able to target one or more creatures/objects
A potion or oil can, by its nature, only have a single target
Also attempting to apply an oil to an enemy in combat isn't a very viable strategy in most cases

You would have to apply the oil to the target creature(s), which would be inefficient at best. It takes a full round to use an oil on a single unconscious target. How would you get it on an unwilling, conscious target?

That would actually make for a very amusing trap.

See bucket example above.

A single oil is one ounce of liquid. How many would you need to fill a bucket?

128 ounces...

I honestly would probably let no more then 1/4 of those have an effect too mind you.

You use that over the castle walls at invading armies rather than hot oil.

Yes and no Hot oil has the advantage of being WAY WAY WAY cheaper.
one wizard spending 6 months to make one bucket of the stuff sounds pretty rough. However it would be pretty cool if when it hit it exploded outwards in a flurry of Magic missiles.

I suspect RAI the bucket trick wouldn't work. Otherwise, a bucket of Cure Light Wounds would be cheaper and more effective than a potion of Cure Serious Wounds.

In first edition their used to be a rule about combining potions had a chart and everything. Bad stuff could happen. even if it was the same potion. I will say however that making 128 ounces of a potion is not cheap.

But the difference between the Cures and the Missiles is that the cures are a potion, missiles an oil.

True youd have to drink the bucket of cure.

No rule against making an Oil of Cure Light Wounds, is there?

Silver Crusade

I do not believe so, no.

It's what was used in Eberron for the Warforged.

Alchemists should keep this in mind.

Another use: the sensuous assassin.

"Yes, my <lord/lady>, I will be glad to get the neck massage oil..."

This won't work more than once, of course, but if the target isn't a high level, it's about the equivalent of sticking a knife in the back with lots of plausible deniability. Heck, the assassin doesn't even need to be the masseuse.

Even more terribly, the hold person/oil-up trick or sleep hex/oil-up.

Then again, there's the unseen servant(s)... they are coming to get you... to rub you... pretty brutal "ghost"-killings, what with everything exploded like that...

... hm, I've not looked at its entry; I wonder if there's a way to use spark like this to set things and people on fire after covering them with oil...

It does not allow you to affect enemies with a thrown liquid as per appling oils onto them. The only thing it would do is allow a dirty trick combat manuever. You'd be losing the oil's magical affect if used with this feat.

None at all. Could also make a potion of inflict light wounds.

Probably be better to drink an ounce of prevention.
