Advice

Hey everyone,

I am currently GMing Rise of the Runelords and as part of it I have created sidequests for each of the PCs. One of the PCs had the idea that his character was going to start as a Rogue and become a Shadowdancer (which she has done admirably). I created a secret group called the Grey Council which trained her in the ways of the Shadowdancer and as she became accomplished and helped with their goals I rewarded her with two weapons, twinned Scimitars called Kemuri and Kagami (Smoke and Mirror). The PC is asking for background information about the weapons.

I am wondering if anyone out there would like to help out?

Are they magical weapons or mundane?

Are they in anyway unique?

If not I would simply say that it's well crafted but mundane weapons used by previous Grey Council members who held the position. The weapons are hereditary to the position and passed along from one incarnation to the next. The were named by a previous member who used them to feint enemies frequently while fighting.

Something like that.

They are magical and unique.

The smoke if the smoke weapon is placed on top of another magical weapon, both weapons are enveloped in a cloud of smoke for a minute then when this clears only Kemuri remains, with the powers of the weapon it has just devoured, if the weapon is of lesser power than Kemuri has it just devours the lesser weapon without getting better itself.

Kagami is powered by negative energy. Whenever either it or Kemuri cause damage to an undead creature it comes into existence in its scabbard with an energy reserve of the hit points that damaged the creature. It is a mirror of Kemuri, all its current powers, but disappears when it has caused the damage that has been stored.

Sovereign Court

Whatever story you want to come up with...

a) they were the weapons of a master [insert name of choice] killed an evil wardlord [insert name here].

b) Was found in the shadowplane tower of a Shae and brought back to the material plane.

c) The scimitars used to belong to Marilith general serving under the demonlord Orcus. At her defeat, the scimitars were collected from her corpse.

etc...

If it's unique and you want her to hogg it till the end I would advise you to consider using the Scaling Magic Item rules so the object scale with her, making them intelligent item that require items of the same value you would have spend to augment them to grow... Ancient Spirit of the two founder of the Grey Council find them a goal and the backstory will be pretty much self writting from the gooal you give the weapons ;)

I have done this before, it doesn't give the player a huge advantage since if they want to make the weapons more powerful they have to sacrifice an equivalent object as the power they get... and the player can grow attached to his weapons since he can keep them till the end... :)

Another option is a legendary item. This allows you to create powers that are unique to the bearer, which can explain why they aren't ultra powerful from day 1 with a new owner. That bond is unique and must grow and evolve.

Yuo this is quite good too... But you should'nt let the weapon grow for free, it has to cost the same as for the other players buying their stuff, or you have to give everyone in the party a Legendary weapon... :)

It is said in the ancient days of Thassilon, the Runelord Xanderghul created an army of secret operatives and taught them the secrets of the shadows. The champion of this order was given a pair of blades, infused with the very essence of the shadow realm, and the deeper the connection to the shadow the bearer had, the more power the weapons possessed [I'm assuming some sort of scaling magic item.]

Over the centuries, they have passed through many hands, and different groups of Shadowdancers have continuously sought them, believing them to hold the key to the deepest understanding of the shadows.

Many years ago, with the aid of seer Magdana the Grey Council managed to obtain the twin blades. Magdana said though that we should guard them until one with the true heart of the shadowdancer [something specific to the PC would be good to add here]. We believe you are the one we have been waiting for, and so we bequeath unto you Kemuri and Kagami, the blades of Shadow.

The weapons seem all about negativity and sucking the life out of others. That suggests an original owner: Do you have an ex-wife? Model the creator/first wielder after her.

I have all my weapons as my other characters from other rpg games. It turns out quite fun.

does one count as a light weapon when wielded in the offhand? if not the rogue is gona have a pretty hard time hitting things with -4 penalty

Random interjection~

The blades are two former members. They were twins. One power hungry the other not. Pull a double dragon style of story, splashing in romules and remus story.

They ended up dying and their power and souls were devoured by the shadows leaving material behind which was then crafted into the weapons.
