Chuthulean oracle or cleric.

Advice

Starting new campaign at level 8 and its going to be great old one themed so I wanted to make a cleric or oracle that would feel very at home in the setting. any suggestions on build and archetypes. I want him to be priest like and not very combat heavy more of a hang back and throw some spells.

I've ran a lot of clerics based on this and level 8 is a sweet spot for any cleric. My question is how do you feel about debuff clerics with madness domain and/or social skills? If you want social skills take being a cardinal archetype and then just find what domain suits you best. If you are ok with debuffing then I'd recommend an ecclisitheurge of Azathoth with void and madness. At that point you are practically an arcane caster as well with dreamed secrets.

I'm ok with debuff. I was looking into the elder mythos cultist, but I was kind of leaning towards the oracle since i haven't tried one before. Mostly I just want to find things to complement a some what psychotic divine caster who will be rambling about non-sense half the time and the other half doing stuff people would prefer not to have witnessed.

If you are looking at the oracle, consider the Dark Tapestry or Waves Mysteries; And the Tounges and Deep One Curses, maybe go Dual Cursed and use both.
If your GM allows 3rd party, there is an Old Gods Mystery by Kobold Press that might be up your ally.

I agree with Nathan.

I'd make a dark tapestry oracle

But if you make a cleric please make a deep one hybrid cleric.

dark tapestry oracle with the Shattered Psyche curse ya think?

I made a Kitsune Dark Tapestry Oracle that dipped one level of Sorcerer with Fey/Serpentine bloodlines. She took Wrecking Mysticism as her curse.

The race gives +1 to Enchantment spell DCs, Fey bloodline gives +2 to Compulsion spell DCs, and Serpentine bloodline allows both language dependent and mind affecting spells to also affect Animals, Magical Beasts, and Monstrous Humanoids as if they were Humanoids.

Sure, I could have just gone straight, typical Kitsune Sorceress. However, I really like a lot of the divine Compulsion spells (Hold Person, Murderous Command, Compassionate Ally, Charitable Impulse, Terrible Remorse, etc.), and the Magical Tail Feats from regular Feat levels and the Curse give me a bunch of amazing Arcane enchantments and defensive buffs (Charm Person, Invisibility, Suggestion, Displacement, Dominate Person, etc.).

She had all the Magical Tails by 9th level, having taken Spell Focus: Enchantment at 1st level, and Tails for 2-9. At 9th level, between spell slots and spell like abilities, she had over 50 potential castings per day, so was never the character that pushed for resting because she was out of resources.

Madness is a really good domain.....

I created a wayang chaokineticist/dark tapestry oracle, with one level of expert (occult scholar), played as an intelligent, cultured, and likeable "missionary of madness". As I am not a cleric, my LN alignment doesn't harm that fact that my "god" likely could care less about me, and is in fact, rather evil, if disinterested, which makes the RP interesting. Nevermind the fact I have a third arcane "truthing" eye I open when I need to "Absolutely know" things.

He is convinced that inspiration and madness are one and the same, has written pamphlets titled "Have you heard the good news about Lord Cthulhu?", and tries to convince folks to worship said lord of madness, cause you need to be a little crazy to be truly inspired!

SO MUCH FUN! (and while not a violent little guy, man, can he bring the hurt when he has no other choice, eat neg energy you book burning jerks! As a scholar, ruining or hoarding knowledge annoys him greatly.)

And madness is a DAMN good domain! (not like my PC has it, but if he did...)

I can't find the shattered psyche curse but deep one curse of corruption would work, or tongues but a slightly more vanilla option.

@ Chromatic Durgon- The shatter psyche curse can be found on the archives of nethys under oracle curses section of the oracle class page.

Shattered psyche looks pretty nifty except for making concentration checks xD

I'll throw in another vote for Dark Tapestry Oracle.

Shapeshifting gives great battlefield mobility and combined with cloak of darkness works well for scouting. Gift of Madness helps tank characters draw aggro, roguish characters flank, and it can ruin enemy tactics. You can build yourself like a debuffer and rely on spells like Murderous Command, Terrible Remorse, Spit Venom, Blindness/Deafness, Barbed Chains, Flickering Lights, bestow curse, Black Tentacles, or you can ste yourself up for melee, use Magic Vestments and Cloak of Shadows to carry through shape changes, turn into tentacle beasts and rip foes apart by force. You might invest in a Ring of Eloquence if this is the case.

Oh yeah the synergy with cloak of shadows and and changing shape is really nice actually.

If you can find it, have a look at d20 Call of Cthulhu. Lots of interesting ideas for character types, and suggestions on how to fit D&D-style games with the Cthulhu Mythos.

So decided dark tapestry oracle gonna be 8th level what are some good feats to go with it?

Why has no one mentioned the elder mythos cultist cleric archtype, it's literally what you want!

I've always wanted to see how a channel focused build would work with that archtype. At 8th level your channel turns people to dust who would be killed by it and effect a pretty large number of creatures with it.

That and the maddening gaze ability is really fun.

Added bonus: dusted enemies' loot is just lying there. Much easier to bag it up since you won't have to strip the corpses. ;)
