What's the point of RAW skill bonus racial favoured class options?

The default favoured class options that anyone can pick are +1 hp or +1 skill point. Some racial favoured class options exist like the gnome rogue's +1/2 to Disable Device and Use Magic Device checks related to glyphs, symbols, scrolls, and other magical writing. How was it missed that in the two levels it would take to get a conditional +1 bonus to two skills, you'd be able to instead take the default +1 bonus to each of those skills under any circumstances. And that's in addition to the +1 skill bonus option being applicable to any skill, while the racial option preselects which skills you can add it to.

Why weren't these racial options made to be a full +1 bonus? This would make it so that they weren't demonstrably inferior options, without letting them completely eclipse the default +1 skill rank (due to being circumstantial, and not counting for feat and prestige class prereqs).

I mean, I've been using that as a gouse rule for ages, but it really boggles my mind that this would have been let through in the first place, so it makes me feel like I'm just missing something.

A 10th level Rogue with +5 to Disable Device that put 10 ranks in Disable device with a Dex 10 would be:
+5+10+0+3 = +18 to Disable Device.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

It stacks with actual skill ranks. A 2nd level gnome rogue with 2 levels of the racial FCB could have 2 ranks in disable device and a +1 to the skill from the racial FCB, thus geting a higher skill bonus than they could with the normal +1 skill rank FCB.

Grand Lodge

A gnome can take a rank in the skill and add his favoured class bonus. If he doesn't want to do that, I agree, this option is not a good choice for him.

The +1 skillpoint FCB adds a rank - but you can only spend as many ranks as you have class levels (more general: hit die). Especially a rogue has no problem to achieve maximum ranks in several skills anyway, hence +1/2 on the check, even if only conditional, is sometimes more interesting.

Yeah, for some reason for the first time in years, a minute after posting this I realized that the disconnect lay in the fact that I'd been treating it like a skill rank (specifically in the level-limit aspect). Feeling a bit sheepish now, but also unsure of whether I should keep doing it this way or revert to the actual rules... Probably just wait til the end of the current game I'm running, then revert to RAW.

Anyway, I'll leave this thread up in case anyone else makes the same mistake I did. ^^;

Revert to actual rules.

Sovereign Court

Well consider that my house rule here is basically treating it like extra skill ranks. So what I've been doing doesn't allow unusually high bonuses, just typically high bonuses in a couple extra skills. Really, the only reason I see to revert back is one less house rule to remember.

Shadow Lodge

Wouldn't making it a balanced option be a good reason to stop using the house rule?

As you said, if the bonus can't be added on top of max ranks in a skill, it's demonstrably inferior to the skill point.

You think that's bad? Half-orc brawlers can add 1/4 to their effective level to determine damage dice. Which adds up to LITERALLY NOTHING until level 16.

What are you talking about, at 7th level they would count as 8th (since they are already 1 level up) at 10th they would count as 12th (2 levels up) and at 13th they would count as 3 levels up getting them to level 16 damage dice.
