Variant Summon Rules for Fey Realms

I just want to make sure I understand this but what does this line mean?

Quote:
. A PC who worships one of the Eldest can choose to use the variant summon list on page 57, but he permanently loses the ability to summon creatures with the outsider type using summon monster and summon nature's ally.

I am not sure what you are confused about? It seems fairly clear. If you worship one of the eldest you can take the variant summoning option but from then on no outsiders for you, so no elementals, azata's, archons, devils etc.

I thought everything you summoned was an outsider which is what kind of confused me.

Technically everything you summon is an outsider when considering spells like banishment or dimensional anchor.
The intent of the line you read seems to mean you can no longer summon the beings andreww mentioned (elementals, archons, etc.). In other words, when the base creature summoned is listed as an outsider, rather than an outsider version of a magical beast, animal, giant, or any other base creature that is not originally listed as outsider.
If your entire summoning list was restricted, such an ability trade would be far too restrictive to be useful, not to mention confusing when summon natures ally can already summon Fey beings such as Satyrs (which would not be affected if Andreww's interpretation is correct).

I think you might be confusing the terms outsider and extraplanar. A creature may gain the extraplanar subtype when summoned, making it vulnerable to dismissal, but its type is unchanged. This entry in Additional Resources means that someone using summon nature's ally would not be able to summon elementals anymore, and someone using summon monster would also be unable to summon demons, angels, and the like.

to my knowledge, this feat will not work for PFS in regard to summon nature's ally. there is no cleric archtype that changes your Sm to Sn. And since this post still stands--http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2lv85?What-are-considered-priests-for-c ustomized#5 - i am thinking feyish druids are out of luck.

What feat? It's an alternate rules set for fey summoning.

But this doesn't say "Priests of the eldest" it just says "worshipers of the eldest." And PFS defines worshipers as anyone who gains benefit from a deity, and says they must be within one alignment step.

Sorry, was in hurry. No feat but something you can do, if a cleric.

Actually the rules are a bit odd in that yes it is in fact any spellcaster can do this namely because its not a deity related ability.

The Exchange 4/5

You need to worship in order to do. Marks ruling has set the variant lists to only apply to clerics. It has been that way along time.
If you look, you will see i have wanted that changed. The first thing i thought of was this probably works better for SNA cause givivg up all outsiders is huge for a SM caster. I dont own the book yet so am only guessing that what you get to summon isnt worth what you loose.
I thought to mention the other thread before to many people started using this with druids.

But this one is different. Neither the entry in the book, nor the listing in Additional Resources, ever mentions the word "priest".

In the book, these variant summoning lists are intended to be the rule for how summoning works for *everyone* when they are in the First World. In Additional Resources, they also expand this to "worshippers" of the Eldest.

So any character of any class who is a worshipper of an Eldest could choose to use *these* variant lists, notwithstanding the usual restriction of other variant lists to Clerics only.

Yeah the book says,"GMs can allow this list to be used by characters with connections to the fey realm." So in this case connection to the fey realm being that you worship one if the eldest. It's a weird list to say the least and outside of 2 seems comparable to the outsiders.

it is this sentence that sticks out for me.
--until we take a look at them, only a cleric of a specific deity can use alternate summon lists granted by their god in PFSOP.

this is an alternate (variant) list, adjusted by whom you worship. so clerics only. Again, would like to see this changed to worshipers, since we have a definition of what a worshiper is.

The previous ruling was for variant lists adjusted by whom you were a Priest for. Not by whom you worshipped. The clause you are quoting wouldn't be invoked because this is a different case.

ETA: Even if you thought it did apply, the wording of AR would overrule it, an example of the specific trumping the general.

The Exchange 4/5

you mean this one
A PC who worships one of the Eldest can choose to use the variant summon list on page 57

i dont see this as changing the fact that only a cleric can use variant lists published in different books. it is worded for future use if a cleric can use SNA. We can disagree and Im ok with that. I see it this way and until told i am wrong by staff will run as so at my tables. not that will come up I think.

It is a good question and hopefully John, Tonya or Linda will be able to provide some guidance.
