what profession would make a good disguise?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

for a witch in a world where humans hunt witches? example "see i am just a scribe nothing to worry yourself about." and how many skill points do you think you would need to be passable at that profession to keep up the ruse.

should i also take points in the skill performance (acting)?

Witch-hunter.

Put full ranks in a profession skill (cook is my personal favorite), and then you can actually do that for a living. Ranks in Bluff to lie about not doing any witchcraft on the side.

Baker, Gardener, or Herbalist would all be appropriate for a Witch, I think

i was thinking about taking a couple lvls in Inquisitor (witch hunter or preacher) and playing my character as a witch that hunts down evil magic users. i have already set up the whole innocent kinder/kobold "act" for my ratfolk character when really the character is very intelligent. preacher seems like the better role for a debuffer play. i was thinking of choosing gardener and craft (drinking containers) and being a gourd canteen seller sorta thing.

Why not just combine the two ideas into one archetype? That'll save you the trouble of multi-classing and let you focus on one ability score.

throw a few ranks into profession (disguise maker)

Scholar of rural folk lore (wait, that is pretty much what a witch is and would be pretty suspicious). Herbalist (sorry, that also describes a witch). Alchemist (pretty much the same as an herbalist). Farmer (it will work until your crops succeed when your neighbors' fail, then you'll be accused for sure). Minister or witch hunter might actually be the safest, and you could get into the role playing of being part of the witch movement to control the church/government from the inside.

Only if your campaign world doesn't have non-witches who study herbs, alchemy, and knowledge of the area around them.....

Don't be an old woman with a wart on her nose. <g>

Seriously, the best disguise would be something that is (a) frequently seen and (b) never associated with spellcasting, or any sort of book-learning. Like a stevedore, miner, or some other sort of manual laborer. Or a drunken mercenary.

Witch-hunter sounds like a good call, too. Remember Salem! Or at least Arthur Miller's The Crucible. One of the best ways to avoid being accused as a witch was to accuse others.

You mean like real life?

For your world, ask what you want your PC to do and then how to do it.

So,
You need to move around (to look for witches) as a normal part of your occupation.
You need to be able to gather information on people and places or anything unusual. ]
You need people to trust you or maybe not.

So I would try (or you and your GM) and think of a profession in your world fits the things you need to do.

Some from literature:
Kings Herald
Performer: (Musician, acrobat, actor, stilt walker, fortun teller, in circus, animal trainer)
Spy or thief or in Guild if available in your world
Merchant (wagon, boat, etc)
Kings Man (taxman, judge, hangman, etc)
Travelling Performer
Traveling Religious Person (bless house, fields, new births, check on spiritual well fair or travel to small villages that do not have enough to have a full time clergyman)
Doctor/Healer or Veterinarian (ie animals are almost as important as your family as they feed your family)
Tradesman (knife sharpener, general handy man, roofer)
Caravan Operator or employee: ie take goods and people from location A to B or along a trade route.

Does that help?

Also, IMHO it really depends on your game world and that of your GM. In my game world often rat-folk are not treated well and kinder ...(edited for content by poster). But if being a rat folk is normal and everyone treats you as normal then find a profession that lets you do some or most of the things you need to do.
But in general if your race is a problem from the start you are going to have problems from the start no matter what your profession is (pretend or actual).

Good Luck and Have Fun

Among many other things, a lot of which have been named in the above posts, you could be a shepherd or a farmer. It has nothing obvious that would help someone with being a witch, which could be the perfect cover. Also, if someone suspects you, just cast some spells on your animals/crops, and suddenly you're the victim.

a kinder >.> those crazy shiny obsessed halflings
