Advancing Arcane Trickster beyond lvl. 10

Advice

Hi all, I would appreciate some help on the following. We have a player in a looooong campaign that is about to gain lvl. 16.

He has 3 lvls of Rogue, 2 lvls of Wizard so far, and all 10 lvls of Arcane Trickster. Since his PrC is complete (no more AT levels to take), he would like to take one more Wizard level.

Can you please help with advice - what exactly does he receive with new level of wizard? Does he gain another lvl. 7 spell, among other things (since his CL is 15+ due to feat/trait) or...?

How exactly do I decide what he gets with new level - where are the rules for it?

First off, how is he wizard 2? You need 2nd level spells to access the prestige class.

But to your question.

You add all that going from wizard 2 to 3 gives? it's the same result as if he was rogue 3 wizard 3 before entering the prestige class. Since arcane trickster is full casting progression he'd be an effective lv 13 wizard for which spell levels he can access and how many spells per day he has. Meaning he'd gain his 1st 7th level spell slot. (the trait that add 2 to your CL only works for spells you cast, not for which level of spells you can cast or how many spells you get per day.)

Could be I simply mixed his levels in my head, probably he is Rogue 2, Wizard 3 then. Will get his character sheet tonight and double check.

Although, I thought he also needs a 2d6 Sneak Attack as a prerequisite, which is Rogue 3. Could be that I gave him some "special" feat or something due to background story, or fulfillment of prerequisites for Story feat from Ultimate campaign...we started campaign 6 years ago, so some details are a bit sketchy to me :-)

(And their character sheets are the size of mini-novella's now)

Since it is a home game, you could suggest him, to take levels in the Evangelist prestige class. Their 2nd lvl lass feature Aligned Class lets them proceed gaining class feature of anaother class you had before in addition to the class features that Evangelist offers. Technically Arcane Trickster doesn't have any levels beyond 10, but one could simply extrapolate Spell Progression and Sneak Attack.
Ot just let him keep leveling AT.

Found the inconsistency (how he was able to become AT with only 2 lvls of Rogue). For whatever reason I made a (I'd call it wrong, now, but back then I was a young GM :-) decision back then and allow him to have Street Mage feat from a 3rd party source. I am hoping it is OK to link SRD here? (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/3rd-party-feats/louis-porter-jr-design/gener al-feats---3rd-party---louis-porter-jr/street-mage)

But if I understand you guys, seems there are no codified rules here, but a kind of "do what is logical", correct?

No, no, those are the actual rules, not mere logical extrapolation. I don't know where exactly it is stated though.

Edit for clarification: 'those' refers to what Chess Pwn said.

I believe you would take the BaB, Saves, and Class ability progression from going from Wizard 3->4 (or 2->3, I didn't see which it actually was), and then you would take your spell progression from the composite of your wizard levels and the arcane trickster levels. Hey, don't forget you get 2 free spells in your book now too! :)

Perhaps I misunderstand your question, but I don't think this is that complicated.

His levels in Wizard stack with his levels in Arcane Trickster in terms of CL, Save DC, and what and how many spells are available to him at whichever levels. He will start gaining Class abilities, BAB, and Saving throw bonuses on the Wizard table instead of the AT table.

If he has a Familiar, his Familiar level has been stuck at level 3 (or 2, or whatever his Wizard Level was) all this time unless he took that Feat the lets your non familiar levels stack with Familiar levels, and taking levels in Wizard again will make his Familiar rise in level again.

Also -- I think you misinterpreted the Street Mage feat. It raises the caster level but does not advance spells per day. That feat does grant an extra die of sneak attack damage when the character is able to cast 3rd level spells, but that does not happen in time for him to qualify for Arcane Trickster after only five character levels. So you let him into that prestige class a level early.

Replace Street mage with Accomplished Sneak attacker and charge him for the trait that gives +2 CL

The Magical Knack trait suffers from the same problem as the Street Mage feat -- it also improves caster level without advancing spells per day. Note, however, that the feat and the trait can be combined to boost caster level if you want to take more Rogue levels than either by itself can cover and/or you want that extra die of Sneak Attack damage (beyond that granted by Accomplished Sneak Attacker).

Also, I did see another way to get the necessary sneak attack dice mentioned by Alex Augunas over at the 35privatesanctuary.com site: Instead of taking 2+ levels of Rogue, take one level of Rogue and one level of Brawler (Snakebite Strangler archetype). Each class grants +1d6 of sneak attack damage, and they stack per the Sneak Attack description in the Snakebite Strangler archetype.

I see. Thanks a lot for the replies everyone, I am confident I know how to proceed with level advancement and have learned a VERY valuable lesson as to what can be house-ruled/brought to the table from third-party.

Thanks again.
