Advice

I am playing an arcanist (level 2), planning on going into evangelist. I have chosen the universalist school exploit so far (enjoying the throwing weapon a bit much).

I am thinking of taking a one level dip into wizard. This is my thinking: The bonus levels for metamagic, and concentrate on metamagics (there are some fairley sweet ones :) ).

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Does it sound like fun?
If so its not stupid.

How does the wizard dip help metamagic? I don't understand.

Nooooo! Think about your poor caster level... arcanists already gain new spell levels a level behind wizards (like a sorcerer); evangelist is awesome but it does delay that another level, so you're always a full spell level behind a wizard. That's less than ideal but it's workable- if you delay that again with a wizard dip then half the time you're two spell levels behind... that's as far behind as a mystic theurge except you're not gaining double progression!

Agreed. You've already spent an exploit on the matter... Don't sacrifice an entire class level, putting your spellcasting a whole spell level behind the wizard.

You already have the ability to use metamagic feats as if you were a sorcerer. Look for some other method using feats or other exploits if you want better flexibility or the ability to use them without expending a higher slot. Retrain your school understanding exploit into something else when it becomes a liability.

I tried that with Cosmo... it didn't work.

By taking one level in wizard my levels with arcanist will add for purposes of the school power. The school power at level 8 permits "free" metamagic adding (basically a pool of points that I can use for the +1 spell level type stuff). Without the dip I only have the level 1 ability (Which I am VERY happy with BTW)

Technically my CL won't be affected (Magical Knack), but Spell progression will defiantly be hurt by it...A real reason I am reluctant to do it.

What other methods for not expending a slot are there?

STORY TIME? What happened with Cosmo?

The clip is actually from Fairly Odd Parents. This is right after Cosmo was told "not to do anything stupid."

Not expending a slot? Mythic abilities, only. Not raising the spell slot LEVEL, there's Metamagic rods. You should buy a lot of them.

Or retrain to Wizard with the Exploiter archetype instead of Arcanist trying to poach Wizard abilities but worse.

Exploiter gives up school abilities (which I believe is what he wants). Metamagic rods are really what you should be getting.

I decided to do it on my next level, if anyone was curious. I feel that I gain a lot from it (some delayed).
