Can scouts steal things? (fast, please)

Advice

To put it another way, if a class/archetype can (a) call itself a "scout" and (b) can steal things, what is it? I don't mean a thieving, no-good Sczarni turned scout (multi-class), I mean a solid choice who could get themselves hired for the job of "scout" but who can handle traps & locks.

I have to develop a 2nd-level NPC for my game TOMORROW, and it just occurred to me that I might not want to create a "scout" as a bow-using ranger. Especially since there's traps up ahead, and no one among the PCs who can deal with them!

Quick backstory, not for RotRL players:
This is highly non-canonical, anyway. My dude's father was a ranger & respected member of the elite scouting force for Magnimar, the Black Arrows. Dad didn't marry until he retired to Magnimar, so he died when the boy was only 8. Still, the lad hero-worshiped his father, and begged the Black Arrows to take him on when he got to 18. Out of respect for his father, they agreed to make him a "scout-cadet" and teach him their craft. He's gotten to second level with them. If I can't give him Disable Device in an honorable way, I'd rather leave it off his character sheet.

Much thanks for any help you can give!

Ranger is fine, grab urban ranger or trapper ranger for traps.

Otherwise anyone can disable non-magical traps with points in disable device, and scout can cover any single class in existence....

So not quite sure what you're asking for. a list of classes like rogues who can disable magic traps?

Slayer, use 2nd-level Slayer Talent for Trapfinding. Only issue is Sleight of Hand isn't a Class Skill.

Slayer with the Trapfinding talent could do the job as a level 2 character.

Archeologist Bard gets good mundane trapfinding, but not magical disarm until getting a Rogue talent at level 4.

Assuming you want to handle with with mundane abilities instead of magic, then choose any class with Perception, Slight of Hand, and Stealth on its skill list. Alternately, you can use a different class and use a trait to grab one of those skills.

Obviously the traditional option would be a rogue, but a bard has those skills too. I'm going to go through the 40 classes for you, but there should be several others.

Good point on the traits; you could get Sleight of Hand for the aforementioned Slayer that way. I didn't bother suggesting Rogue, since it's supposed to be a ranged character.

If your reason is rp based just look at it as he is a tinkerer or a locksmith. Both are honorable ways to know how to mess with things

Trapper Ranger would probably be the best, but Bards and Alchemists also have archetypes that allow Disable Device vs. Magicla traps.

As has already been mentioned, anyone with points in the skill can attempt it vs. non-magical traps.

I'm not sure why Unchained Rogue isn't acceptable.

The investigator gets those as class skills and can use DD for magical traps. I too wonder why not an unchained rogue, however?

I tried to explain that I was looking for a class that "an elite scout force for Magnimar" would have taught, so for RP reasons I wasn't willing to consider rogue. That goes doubly for unchained rogue, since I'm not using the book.

I should have specified, however, that Sleight of Hand isn't needed. Just disable device and a good reason to be actually experienced with finding & disabling traps (and as a sidelight, picking locks). I had had the vague impression when I simply glanced at the archetype earlier that Trapper Ranger was for building not-desirable traps, and round-filed it mentally.

So now I need a class or archetype that I'm not familiar with & putting together a character in -- uh -- two hours. I didn't think I had time to comb through how many books is it now? Soooo... I'm very grateful to you for pointing me to two quite viable options, Slayer w/ the 2nd-level Slayer Talent for Trapfinding, & Trapper Ranger.

Of the two, Trapper Ranger probably fits better and is going to be faster. They not only get the class skill bonus but the rogue's 1/2-level bonus to Perception for traps & Disable Device. I'm going to pull this off -- thank you so much.

Surely unchained rogue with the scout archetype is the obvious one?
