Balista, Large Creature and Titan Mauler.

Rules Questions

This is more of a proof of concept than an actual build.

Is there anything wouldn't allow a Large Creature (A Trox, for example), with third level on Titan Mauler to use a Ballista as a normal weapon. A Ballista is essentially a Huge Heavy Crossbow and the Massive Weapons class feature from the Titan Mauler allows the creature to wield a Two-Handed Weapon meant for a creature one size bigger than him.

So I would think the answer is no.

I would allow it crossbows could be fixed in place so why not hold the huge crossbow. Even better synthesist summoner huge biped then 3 levels of titan mauler gives you a gate breaker ballista.Or even at huge size you could carry a cannon.

Liberty's Edge

Any reason you couldn't use an actual huge heavy crossbow?

Ballistae are more commonly available. most Huge races don't bother with crossbows.

Mostly missing the cheese from bypassing things like Deflect Arrows due to being a Siege Weapon.

Scarab Sages

Basically, you'd reskin a Huge Heavy Crossbow as a Ballista in rules. It would be much easier to use the Heavy Crossbow for rules, as the siege rules are inappropriate for a single creature wielding a weapon sized for them.

Regarding deflect arrows, a huge creature could definitely deflect ballista bolts fired from what is basically a huge heavy crossbow. The note on deflect arrows is directed at very large ammunition relative to the character with deflect arrows - it isn't intended to create a special immunity for siege weapons.

Regarding the Titan Mauler, that only applies to Melee weapons. Read it again. Deal is that the Oversized weapon rules only apply to melee weapons. As written, no character can use oversized or undersized ranged weapons.

I keep thinking about this thread and giggling. Really, I keep thinking about the scene in The Gamers where the "master thief" is trying desperately to save a party member's life and has one backstab chance at it (and yes, this is 3rd ed). He keeps insisting on trying the backstab over with a bigger & bigger weapon, but the foe threatening his friend with certain death-in-one-attack isn't downed no matter how much damage he does.

Finally, the player announces, "I backstab with a ballista."
