Since both require a swift action to activate and you only get one per round this means that it would take two rounds to get both up and going. They also both add damage equal to your class level, not your character level. This means the damage bonus is the same as a single classed character except it takes longer to get going. About the only thing you would really gain is the CHA to AC and hit, and the order bonus from the cavalier. Unless you have time to prepare this is going to be weaker than a single class characters ability, if you do get a chance to prep it will be slightly stronger but not much.

Nope. They both have damage scaling with level (and unless otherwise stated, that's always class level), so every point you get from one is at the cost of the other. That would be an even trade, but you have to activate them both separately to get the same damage, taking up a use of each. So the result is fewer uses, with less damage on the first round.

Ok, it could work with a few tweaks. First, you'd want to go Paladin and use Variant Multiclass with Cavalier as your secondary. At level 3, this lets you challenge as if you were a Cavelier of your character level - 2. To illustrate, if you were lvl 6, you'd be a level 6 Paladin (with all that entales) and you'd use challenge as if you were also a level 4 Cavalier.
Second, you'll want to use Unchained Action Economy. This gives you 3 "acts" per round and different actions subsume a different number of acts. By this method, Smite Evil and Challenge are, each, simple actions and take 1 act each, allowing you to activate both on round 1 (and still have 1 act left with which to move or attack).

Yeah a variant multiclass could work actually.
I haven't read much about the unchained action economy rules. Can you explain that a bit more please?
And for the other posters, so pretty much you can't use both smite evil and challenge at the same time under normal circumstances? Why do I say normal circumstances? Take for example, a paladin/samurai under the effects of haste, could he use both abilities? Haste has always given me difficulty when I gm.

You can use both at the same time, but they need to be activated on separate turns. So you one turn with less damage than you would have had, and on the second turn, you finally catch up.
