So what do I do with it?
Ok, Power Attack and Improved Natural Attack, sure. What else can I do with it? What Race should I be? How about VMC (Maybe Fighter so I can Barroom Brawler and Abundant Tactics while focusing on Natural Attacks)?
I don't need to be a Melee Monster, I'd rather be flexible, but strong enough.

For race, the three floating +2 races all have advantages
-generic human- you know the drill
-half elf- they have an option that gives +2 on all will saves, as well as a +2 vs. enchantments. Will is your one bad save. So worth considering. Just grab this, iron will, and then forget about it.
-half orc- I mostly look at this because they come with a good selection of proficiencies for a str. build. It is worth considering, since some of the monstrous humanoids are fine with weapons, and giants practically demand it. Just because you are a shape shifter doesn't mean you 'have' to go with natural attacks. At least worth considering for back up weapons when facing problems.

My group are about C students at the optimization school. They make competent characters, but no Blockbuster Wizards, and such. I'm trying to aim for about that level.
I won't have any trouble getting +40 to hit at level 20 (and scaling pretty well until then), so I'm looking to focus more on the utility side of things.
As far as not being a melee monster, I don't need a huge number of attacks, and I don't need huge damage. As long as I can contribute effectively in combat, I'm good.
I'm looking at the out of combat side of things. I won't ever have very many shifts per day, so I need to make em count.
Really, I'm trying to come as close as possible to the Master of Many Forms from 3.5. Maybe metamorph isn't the way?
Edit: Wizard/Arcanist/Shaman and the form spells would be the closest I've found, and they have superb utility, but the to-hit is lacking, and are pretty squishy.

Giant Form II - 39+ = BAB +15, STR +21 (base +18+2, level +5, tome +5, belt +6, true alchemy mutagen +8, giant form II +8 = 52), Size -2, Weapon/Amulet +5 + any attack buff at all.
Giant Form I - 39+ = BAB +15, STR +20 (base +18+2, level +5, tome +5, belt +6, true alchemy mutagen +8, giant form II +6 = 50), Size -1, Weapon/Amulet +5 + any attack buff at all.
Monstrous Physique IV - 38+ = BAB +15, STR +20 (base +18+2, level +5, tome +5, belt +6, true alchemy mutagen +8, giant form II +6 = 50), Size -2, Weapon/Amulet +5 + any +2 attack buff at all.
VMC Fighter is +2-4 more
VMC Barb is +3 more
Power Attack is -4
Flanking is +2
Haste is +1
Bless is +1
Luckstone is +1-2 (Fate's Favored)
Ioun Stones are +1-2 (Pale Green Prism, Flawed Pale Green Prism)
Heriosm is +2 more (doesn't stack with Flawed Pale Green Prism)

As far as not being a melee monster, I don't need a huge number of attacks, and I don't need huge damage.
The archetype is literally made for people who want to play a (humanoid) melee monster.
Also, Improved Natural Attack only workes for one attack form at a time and is therefore not that great for a Metamorph (especially if you want flexibility).

Just thought I'd drop in and say you can alter your form during the shapeshifting without using it a second time. It just takes a standard action and makes you fatigued for the next round, so not something to do in combat.
No, you cannot. Shapechange works as alter self, and alter self only allows one form per casting.

This is correct.

Imbicatus wrote:You can actually make decent use of Vital Strike, since you can eventually be a huge giant wielding a colossal weapon. Half-orc works well for greataxe proficency.I wonder whether it is possible to do this on the basis of the druid skinshaper?
Isn't that the one that gets monk unarmed strikes?
Eh, I would rather go with the goliath druid myself. Skinshaper seems to be restricted to small/medium, and get less max bonus in a score over all- better for casters and those in campaigns with very tight quarters.
Goliath also gives you regeneration, which makes you near unkillable unless your GM throws in fire/acid. Doesn't save you from TPK (since they can wait your wildshape out), but good for general use since you never fall. Even better as a half orc with ferocity- it makes that mechanic an actual asset rather than a 'make them want to give the killing blow instead of attacking others' liability.
Goliath also gets you your HUGE bang for your HUGE bucks immediately, since it gets enlarge person for its spontaneous casting. You get large sized great axes or falchions that hit like greatswords from the get go. Thus, you are already set up for your quest to be HUGE.

Shapechanger, the metamorph ability, allows you to change shape without returning to your original form. It does look like it would cost another daily use though.
