Mounted Kineticist

Rules Questions

Scarab Sages

So I had the fun idea earlier for a mounted gnome kineticist. But I'm a little foggy on how using a SLA works when mounted, and how the actions the 2 of us take interact. My searching didn't find anything like this, but if this was answered elsewhere please let me know.

ie. we start in melee, can the mount full-attack and 5-foot step back so i can gather power and blast?

can the mount move, then I gather power and blast in the same turn? or do I have to gather and wait for next turn to blast while riding it?

do things like jagged flesh or searing flesh poke/cook it?

You can guide your mount with your knees (DC 5 ride check) which will free up your hands to gather power.

Ride skill entry:

Quote:
Guide with Knees: You can guide your mount with your knees so you can use both hands in combat. Make your Ride check at the start of your turn. If you fail, you can use only one hand this round because you need to use the other to control your mount. This does not take an action.

Your mount's movement does not use up any of your actions, but things become more complex and complicated if you want to use your mount to attack. Your best bet, until you have a war trained mount and a high enough ride check, is to just use your mount as free movement so you can keep your full actions.

It's the attacking and on contact defense abilities that seem trickier. Thanks for clearing up the movement stuff Texas.

You would constantly be making concentration checks if you're trying to gather power while mounted and moving about.

And if you fail of course, it blows back on you.

That is only if you move your mount, use your blast, then move the mount again.

Gathering power actually doesn't trigger any concentration checks from how I read it, since its a Su ability. You need to do a concentration check for the kinetic blast SLA if you do as I said above but only if you do that specifically. Blast, after, or with just a single mount move and you're fine. You will take a -4 if your mount does do a double move, however.

So if I'm reading this all right, I can buy a riding dog/pony pretty early and basically just treat my character as moving faster. And since I'm using a SLA I don't really need any feats except maybe Mounted Combat to defend the doggie?

This seems really good, but I'm curious how well riding dogs/ponies survive (especially in PFS) through the levels. I assume since I'll almost never want to be closer than 30' the HP on the dog shouldn't be too terrible an issue?

they don't do very well. An alchemist bomb, a fireball, ... any AoE and it's down.

But for two feats you can get an animal companion which does better at staying alive.

Why get a Riding Dog, listed as 150gp, when you can get a BISON, listed at 75gp combat trained...

Dog: AC 13, 13hp, STR 15...
Bison: AC 17, 42hp, STR 27...

Bison = best mount on a budget EVER

Scarab Sages

The bison is good, but it's large so i give up the bonuses of fitting indoors on it. At that point I might as well be a human, and then I can have a companion and precise shot at lvl 5.

On the other hand, Bison are super cheap and should have decent survivability up to lvl 7 when my gnome would be able to get a companion. Squeezing isn't always so bad.

But I was thinking a boar would probably be the best medium sized mount, though less of a budget item.

Does Monstrous Mount work with Animal Ally?

They way I see it, if you're indoors you typically don't need the mobility provided by a mount, at least in my experience. So I go for the most bang for my buck. Get a wand of Carry Companion for when you don't think your Bison will be safe outdoors unguarded.

as for monstrous mount, "divine bond (mount), hunter's bond (animal companion), or mount class feature with an effective druid level of 4" I'd have to say no they don't combine

Scarab Sages

Darn, a warg companion would have been awesome. As for the wand, I think bison are cheap enough to go without.

I suppose now I'll just have to plan purchased mounts out by level due to CR restrictions. Still can't have the bison until lvl 5.

Indoors/underground my Gnome still only moves 20', and a pony is great for repositioning, and with 5 Str saddlebags are great.
