Ranger trying to decide whether to dip Rogue at level 3

Advice

Non-PFS game, using mostly core, but can negotiate non-core stuff with the GM.
I'm currently running a level 2 human Ranger. He is a generic switch-hitter build at this point (Power attack, Cleave, Rapid Shot, switching between Greatsword and Shortbow).
We are a 4 person party, the others are a Paladin, a Cleric, and a Sorcerer.
The reason I am flip-flopping about a Rogue dip is because on one hand, the group could use a trap-disarmer and skill-monkey, and my character could easily fill that gap with one level of Rogue.
But on the other hand, I'm one of only 2 full-BAB characters in the group, and thus far my character has played an important damage-dealing role on the front line. And I'm not sure if I want to delay the acquisition of my combat-style feats (archery).
I'm not too concerned about my Ranger's future spellcasting career, because the rest of the party has that on lock.
Based on the party, is a 1 level rogue dip a good call?

What about the Trapper archetype? You sacrifice spellcasting entirely, but you gain Trapfinding as a Rogue, and Disable Device as a class skill.

Just put some ranks into disable device, bam, your the trap guy.

I did already put a rank into Disable Device, but I wanted the full benefits of Trapfinding. The Trapper archetype totally solves this. Thanks, I completely overlooked it.

Hopefully my GM is having a good day and will let me take it.

I wouldnt switch spells for the traps, but if you are exclusevely trying to get DD, yeah, that works.

What about traits?, were you allowed to use traits?, can you ask to obtain your 2 mandatory traits?.
If so, just go with the trait +1 DD and DD is always a class skill, and any other skill your party is missing, which, with that composition, i would say Knowledge(Local).

Keep in mind that with that option, you dont delay anything.

You will end up weaker dipping rogue throughout your career. The negatives outweight your little positives.

See if your DM would let you retrain your ranger into the Urban Ranger archetype. They get trapfinding at level 3.

Trapfinding honestly is not important, at all. Giving up spellcasting for trapfinding must be the worst choice you could take.

I wouldn't do it for the world. Sacrifice a feat and ask your DM if you can take Additional Traits and get the one from Carrion Crown I think, which gives trapfinding.

DO NOT give up spellcasting, it's just way too good > access to wands, scrolls, way too much in utility.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that just putting some ranks in disable device should be sufficient. And maybe buy a wand of mount for your wizard to use. Having a mount that lasts an hour at a time walk in front of you is a very effective method of detecting traps.

It's almost never worth it to multiclass into rogue, and it's never worth it to dip rogue for trap finding.

Or, depending on your gm allowing it, take a look at switching to a slayer and take trapfinding as a talent. You still get hour combat style and have already said you are ok with dropping your spells.

Scarab Sages

If you were allowed unchained rouge instead of rouge, I'd say the multiclass could be worth it. Free weapon finesse could be useful for an archer ranger if you need to switch hit, and if you allow ranged feint from ultimate intrigue, you could easily get ranged sneak attack.

However, with a mostly core focus, it's not worth it.

That Akbar is awesome.
GM just got back to me, the most recent ruling is: "core only".
Too bad, but it makes my decisions easier.
Consider me convinced that Trapfinding/Disable Device isn't all that important. I'll go straight Ranger, unless there's any core dips that are worth it?

As i said before, traits . Get the trait of +1 DD an it is a class skill.

Of course, only if the DM allows it and you havent taken any other trait.
Edit: Damn it, I though traits were core ... silly me.

Regards.-

You probably thought traits are Core because even Core PFS uses them.

Silver Crusade

Yes, I think that was my mistake.

I apologyze. Anyway, with a cleric and a Sorcerer, you shouldnt have much problems anyway.
