Height?

Rules Questions

The game consists of squares 5x5'. But how high is the standard cell? Is a standard medium creature 5x5x5'? Do the rules say? For consideration, the 5x5' square has room to maneuver in, does this also apply to height?

I believe the rules doesn’t deal with height of "cubes". A flying creature is considered to be in the same square as a creature below it.

And to my knowledge, there's no out-of-the-book way to model low ceiling caves (which should be pretty common, if you think about it). So yes, a square is a square. You can stand there, it has ample room to manoeuvre in every direction.

The rules don't deal with 3 dimensions in any great detail (if at all). It is simpler to assume a 5' cube, even if that leaves things a little wonky (3'halfling and 7'Viking still only able to hit the 5-10' cube above them).

Yes, all squares are actually 5x5x5 cubes once you start trying to take into account 3 dimensions.

Even though it's wonky, climbing up a surface kinda uses the same square rules for vertical motion, so ultimately it's a cube

Which gets weird. I have a character over 5ft in height with burrow and told my GM I burrow 5 feat down. He ruled that my feat were sticking out of the ground.

Thought so. Good call on the climbing rules. Thanks, you guys.

This is why all my hulking brawly armoured warrior-types are 4'11". But yeah, as a simplification it works.

It doesn't get weird. You character only occupies a 5x5x5 cube, no matter whether they're a 3ft tall gnome or a 7ft tall human. As long as you're medium/small size category you only occupy 5x5x5.

For mechanics Pathfinder doesn't care how tall you actually are.

Remember though, most people are only at their full height when standing perfectly straight. You'll lose height just by taking up a stance in combat.

Uhm... Was that your GM's sense of humor or did they actually impose an in game effect for having your feet sticking out of the ground?

If it had a mechanical effect, remember to remind him that this change hurts him more than you, actually.

Next time he sends a Great Wyrm Red Dragon or something your way, remind him that since Collossal creatures are 64+ feet long, and the dragon only has 20 ft. Reach and takes up a 30 ft. square, you can attack him from well beyond his reach with impunity!
