Remove Curse is an equal level spell with narrower use, and the rules say cursed items can only be removed after a targeted Remove Curse or similar magic. It's true that Dispel Magic can suppress magical properties for 1d4 rounds, but that may Be too little. That's not enough to remove cursed armor without further magic, and even if you do remove the cursed item, it may be able to return once its magic turns back on. (Some cursed items simply return if gotten rid of without breaking the curse.)

Can dispel magic be used to suppress a cursed item therefore allowing a character to discard it?
Clever concept, but I don't think so.
Removing Cursed Items: While some cursed items can be simply discarded, others force a compulsion upon the user to keep the item, no matter the costs. Others reappear even if discarded or are impossible to throw away. These items can only be discarded after the character or item is targeted by a remove curse or similar magic. The DC of the caster level check to undo the curse is equal to 10 + the item's caster level. If the spell is successful, the item can be discarded on the following round, but the curse reasserts itself if the item is used again.
The text is pretty specific that you need to use remove curse or similar magic. As Dispel Magic is in every other way better than Remove Curse and is the same spell level, I think you would be hard-pressed to find a DM who would consider it acceptable to also allow Dispel Magic to qualify as "similar magic".
