Weapon Finesse House Rule

Homebrew and House Rules

So one of our groups regular house rules is that everyone gets weapon finesse as a free feat. This is done mainly to give dex characters like a rogue an extra feat to spend on something that matters.

What is the forums thoughts on this, as i am curious to hear other peoples opinions

I've been doing "Everyone who meets the prerequisites gains Power Attack, Piranha Strike, Deadly Aim and Weapon Finesse for free" as well as "No combat maneuver requires intelligence or Combat Expertise feat". Seems to make most martial builds come online sooner.

I've always wanted to try a houserule that says "attack bonus = STR + DEX, base AC = 11". I can't imagine anything terribly wrong with free Weapon Finesse.

Building a high Str&Dex character might actually be worth it on something other than an archer.

I do something similar, except as a "finesseable" weapon property on light weapons, rapier, whip, and the curveblade.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

This popular list of houserules might be of interest to you. It gives everyone weapon finesse, in addition to a lot of other nice things that reduce the proliferation of tax feats.

Yeah, it actually changes surprisingly little. Other than the fact that physical-stat-dumping is a really bad idea for a warrior (go figure), and you can balance STR and DEX in whatever proportions you think best define your character.

I give Weapon Finesse for free and make Deadly Agility from Path of War available. It makes Dex builds accessible without making them overshadow Strength builds. Deadly Agility also addresses an issue I'm surprised doesn't come up often in discussions about the power of Dex builds.

I absolutely love this, though I have one not listed, which is that in our games, Endurance is rolled into Toughness - Endurance is such a sad feat on its own, and fits perfectly fine as an aspect of Toughness (and Toughness is a great prereq for Diehard.)

Edit: We've also houseruled that the prerequisites for Whirlwind Attack are Cleave and Great Cleave. Why is this dodge/mobility and not cleave-related?

For those who give free feats like Weapon Finesse and Combat Expertise for free, what do you replace class abilities where you get them for free? Like Swashbuckler's Finesse or Brawler's Cunning?

Liberty's Edge

Another feat.

Feats for everybody.

I don't because:

1) The entire point of those abilities is to put a band-aid on the problem that the house rule was meant to fix.

2) Those abilities are still very useful. Swashbuckler's Finesse allows you to finesse weapons you normally couldn't. Brawler's Cunning works on many feats not related to Combat Expertise. There's especially a lot of feats from Weapon Master's Handbook that give prerequisite shortcuts for characters with Brawler's Cunning.

Well since I only give weapon finesse as a feat, it doesn't really affect the brawlers cunning

As for the Swashbuckler's Finesse I would just give a free combat bonus feat.

Now I do like the idea of giving Deadly Agility as a free feat to allow high dex builds to compete with strength builds. I will need to consider it.

I've been handing out weapon finesse for free for years to no ill effect. This is a houserule that I give two thumbs up to.

I. Liking to this although it may skew point buy, two 14s equaling an 18 and all.
