Monk Races

Advice

I'm going to make a Unchained Monk and trying to decide between these two races. Oread or Vanara.

Oread give +1 natural armor +2 strength/Wisdom -2 Charisma but are slow at 20 feet.

Vanara give +2 Dexterity/Wisdom -2 Charisma and get to move 30 feet and climb 20 feet. They also have the tail ability.

I've read strength is the most important monk stat and the +1 natural armor seems great but the slow speed is the opposite of what monks are trying to do.

Which would you recommend?

Eventually, with fast movement, your regular movement will be fine, and flying kick only uses fast movement anyways, further lessening the burden of that 10 feet, also, the Oread has a trait that allows deflect ray once per day and more AC against ray spells. Oread is one of the best monk races.

Vanara I more liked with a core archetype monks like Zen Archer or Far Strike monk. It's ability to move easily to high ground and even hang from something with its tail with the feat Tree Hanger, negating trips, made it really good for ranged combat.

I'd personally go Oread. The imagery is just too cool. Also, their FCB is pretty good for unarmed iirc.

Just move some points from Dex to Strength and choose Vanara.

Monkey Monk has a great image, very Son Goku.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Orang-Pendak is the master race.

+2 STR/WIS, -2 INT is easily solvable, Small race for +1 attack and AC, +2 to sunder.

Scarab Sages

Of the two, I prefer Oread, but really, they both are great.

Grippli make awesome dex monks too.

Tengu make great monks and with the new style feats in Weapons Master's Handbook, the tengu's sword trained won't go to waste

On an unrelated note, I just finished the Race Selection section of my UnMonk guide..
