Got a couple of nice entries into the story this week.
Trinity - Lois invites Batman and Wonder Woman over for dinner.
Lois is taking the initiative here. If her husband is going back into action she wants to "know the people who have his back". Diana is fairly accepting of it all (and brings a Wild Boar for dinner). She wants Lois to know she dosen't feel about Clark the way she felt about her Clark and she wants to be Lois's friend.
Bruce on the other hand makes it very clear that "You are not my Superman, I liked my Superman, I understood my Superman, We came from a similar understanding with each other. I don't know you"
And Clark has a wonderful story about Batman in a rainbow colored costume, that Bruce did not find at all funny.
There is a bit of an awkwardness in the air here. These three know each other and at the same time they don't. Batman and Wonder Woman are faced with a stranger who looks like the hero they know but dosen't really act like him. And Superman has all these memories of his Batman and Wonder Woman that don't match up with the people he is now dealing with
Then we have Superman #7 which is a nice little interlude piece of the "Smiths" going to the county fair together as a family.
Watching him balance family time and the knowledge of an impending robbery at the ticket stand wasa good feeling. In someways it's like the sort of thing they used to do in the Silver age only with out the arrogant wink at the reader thing I used to hate. I like this Superman. He's not the Bryne, Man of Steel I used to enjoy after Crisis but neither is he the arrogant silver age showoff I hated. Superman as Dad just feels so right to me.
What is the rainbow-bat-man thing a reference to? Or was it invented for this issue and not something from an actual pre-flashpoint comic?

Actual thing from one issue of Detective in the late '50s. That story got [b]a nod and a wink in the Brave and the Bold cartoon as well.

Charles,
Not sure that's 100% relevant so much as he suspects someone (possible Time Trapper!) of altering events and time.
The badness being instigated by the Time Trapper doesn't rule out anyone else (like Dr. Manhattan) being responsible, since the one consistent thing about the Time Trapper is that it's always someone new under that hood...

Free,
It's surprising better than you might expect since you have Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz (both very raw and new recruits) trying to work together while saving the planet from the Red Lanterns and probably soon a Phantom Lantern. (I kid you not.)
Also apparently Simon can now cure people with the Red Lantern affliction.
You cause before you took off the ring, they died...

I like Lobo when he first appeared as a villain in the original Omega Men.
He was a bad ass assassin/bounty hunter that cared not for you.
They then combined him and Wolverine to make the Lobo that is here today.

Wow is it ever good that Lobo dropped those leotards.
And I wonder if we'll ever get an explanation for why the 'real' Last Czarnian has returned?

Well, that didn't take very long. Just a few months in to collecting some Batbooks again and I'm ready to cancel both Detective and Nightwing.
I never did like the multi-title cross-overs all that much, but they're even worse when you don't collect all the titles. And I don't really want to waste money collecting one or two issues of series I don't normally get, just so the stories in the books I did want can make sense.
Then there's the characters I've never seen before. Who the hell is this lame ass Superwoman wannabe called Gotham Girl? The kid in the cave with Alfred I'm guessing is from that We Are Robin book.
Aberzombie |
I didn't get into the new Lobo over much, but I was glad he wasn't a 90s wrestler.
My favorite Lobo was the one that showed up in the Giffen Justice League and L.E.G.I.O.N. comics. I liked his initial miniseries they did shortly afterwards, although that was the beginning of his "90's Wrestler" as you call it. This newest one looked too much to me like a reject from a Ziggy Stardust concert, so I never got into it.

Aber,
The kid in the cave is Duke Thomas, the kid that found out Bruce was Batman from Year Zero. He was in the We are Robin, yes, but he's kind of upgraded himself into a secondary assistant for Batman instead of a Robin.
Gotham Girl is from the first issues of Batman Rebirth. As for the inter-title thing, this is just for a one time series thing dealing with Hugo Strange and his apparent obsession with monsters. That plus Psycho-Pirate play a role too.

The crossover makes sense in the build up for I am suicide.
I've enjoyed Nightwing Tec and Titans.

More like the inter-title thing has become a regular staple of the Batbooks. No-Man's Land, Contagion, Death of a Family....
Thomas Seitz |
Charles,
I think it was a build up because apparently Batman goes to fight Bane in Bane's home turf via Suicide Squad.
Matthew,
Nightwing hasn't really jived for me but then again I'm used to Dick being old school Nightwing in Bludhaven.
Teen Titans has a ways to go but it's starting off pretty decent.
Aber,
Death of a Family was some time ago. This is just after the whole Jim Gordon in the Batsuit/Rabbit Batman exo-skeleton.

More than a few we are robin fans at comic con. There was a large group of we are robin cosplayers who had a we are Robin flag that was signed by the creator of the comic. Didn't know this was so popular but I am so happy to see it represented.

just to add... I think Night of the Monster Men is 'writing to the trades' The three books had their 6 issue runs (about the size of a TPB) and this crossover takes 6 issues. So in addition to setting up "I am Suicide" it also is a self contained story, of the whole Bat Team (minus Barbara, but that's ok in this case)
I am holding out hope DC holds to its 'two year plan' with these books.
I find the, intentional or not, parallels to Grant Wilson interesting. Both were motivated by family (Grant idealizing Deathstroke, Clair and her brother by the deaths of their parents and Batman's appearance) both made deals for powers that would/will eventually kill them, and both being motivated to prove themselves to their idols. I find myself worrying about Claire, primarily because of 'comic book death'. She's more likely to die and stay dead than Bruce, Dick, Babs, even Alfred and Jim Gordon. In the short time we've seen her I've grown attached, and really hope Bruce can save her, not just from the Psycho Pirate's manipulations but from her own powers.
Just like Ahsoka, Rex, Fives and the characters from Clone Wars you don't see in Revenge of the Sith, Clair's fate is more compelling. Will she live? Will she die? Will she stabilize as 'supergirl lite' or will she be powered down? I'd love to see her take up the Red Robin mantle, since Tim is <redacted>.
Charles Scholz |
I hope Gotham Girl stays on. I hope they find a way for her to keep her powers at a reduced level so it isn't killing her.
Of course, if that happened then everyone in the DC Earth would start wanting super powers. Could Batman live with that???
No. He would shut it down immediately.
Thomas Seitz |
I agree with Charles. I think if people found out about ways to make themselves on or just below par of what Superman can do, it's basically bringing out a Super Hero arms race that Batman wouldn't want to deal with. See - Kingdom Come.
Also Tim isn't dead. He's just stuck right now between plot holes.

Yeah I was just keeping his status redacted. It is an interesting concept though, if she becomes Red Robin and Tim comes back, having two red robins like two flashes or all the green lanterns.
Tim will be back. I'm hoping the two year plan pans out.

I'm trying to figure out how Kadabra over in Titans fits into everything.
Now he is claiming to be the reason Wally was shoved out of time and forgotten but looking at the story with the perspective of a Reader that doesn't feel right. Plus the not so subtle "oh my nose dropped a bit of blood on my watch would you just look at that" kind of reinforces that feeling.
Someone is trying to clean up a mess ad is using Kadabra to do it.
