Creepy character for Carrion Crown?

Advice

My party's switching to a Carrion Crown campaign, and I'm unsure of what to play. I'd like to get in the theme with a "creepy" character. I know it's also done through flavour, but if the gameplay matches, all the better. The player's guide didn't really help much in that respect, and maybe new classes/archetypes have come out by now that aren't listed in there.
I'm not sure of the exact party composition, but there'll be 6 of us. I've heard loose ideas of a Slayer, Investigator, and Skald, but nothing's set in stone yet. I prefer something that's in-your-face, gameplay-wise (no enchantments, illusions, or divination-focused characters), preferably something that can deal out and take a hit. No d6 casters, preferably something with medium armour proficiency. I'm a big fan of 3/4 BAB spellcasters due to their versatility.

Is there an archetype that screams "creepy" to you? My gut instinct was a necromancy-focused Occultist with Necromantic Servant, but I'm open to suggestions.

The Necromancer Occultist is a good choice, I haven't played one myself but I've heard good things about that build from others. I'm personally a pretty big fan of the plague doctor aesthetic so a vivisectionist alchemist would be a cool idea.

No d6 casters....LOL those are the best casters. And this is a great campaign to play a necromancer or Gluttony wizard. Hands down you would do some serious work.

A dirge Bard is like tailor made for this AP. But you dislike Enchantment spells so that is out I guess.

Really there is just a few classes that fit within your parameters.
Occultist, Medium, Inquisitor, WarPriest, hunter, and Magus

All of them would work well in this AP. I would say the Inquisitor will shine Bright but I know very little of the Occult classes cause I do not want to play them.

Well there are archetypes that are meant to be creepy but will fall
Short without roleplay and there are those that can be made frightening but also function very well. Which would you prefer?

Why not play an alchemist?
Let's say beastmorph vivisectionist!
3/4 Bab, light armor proficiency but natural armor bonuses will make up for that, and if transforming into a thing of nightmare with claws, bite,
bat hears and wings is your thing, it can be a lot of fun!
A good Strength/int combo, one of my players is having one in Carrion Crown and enjoys it a lot!

Alchemist with Tumor Familiar and extra Arms. Base the Familiar on a Bat, so it can detatch to fly around.

What I can offer right now without an answer to my question is that there are seriously twisted deities that have some distrubing portfolios ranging from pain, seduction, rape, madness, and lots more. Being a cleric using deific obedience into a prestige clas like evangelist fits the idea perfectly but might not be best fit mechanically depending on your deity. But you can literally envision the most creepy thing to you and pick a deity to that.

Other creepy things I think of from demon lords for example.... Bathing in blood, incest, despair, suicide, disease, and more.

Oh one more, an oracle with wings of terror revelation from I think outer rift mystery.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I was thinking of a Cleric or Inquisitor of The Lost Prince, with the Madness or Knowledge domain (Memory subdomain), and make him like a really morose guy, that sort of sets the mood. I'm leaning towards Inquisitor because I'm already playing multiple Clerics and because Inquisitors get more skill points. For flavour he's on a mission to record everyone's name before they're forgotten. Maybe Sanctified Slayer subdomain so I get more uses out of Studied Target, rather than a once-per-day Judgment.

Carrion Crown is set in Ustalav; the nation's patron deity is Pharasma, who is a straight-up death goddess. Play a cleric of Pharasma (d8 caster, medium armor proficiency, 3/4 BAB, can definitely hit and get hit) and you get to be a full caster, tear up haunts and undead, and have tons of influence on the NPCs you meet, but you can also justify playing a completely morbid and death-obsessed character.

Sorry, just saw that you don't want a cleric. Inquisitor of Pharasma would be pretty stellar too, as would a warpriest of Pharasma. NE alignment is a possibility, if you want to be wicked as well as sinister.

Working off Emmit's suggestion, check out Pharasma's Deific Obedience and boons. A warpriest with a dagger as their sacred weapon could cut down undead left and right. For a different approach, a bard or investigator (or rogue with the newly released eldritch scoundrel archetype) could go into the evangelist prestige class. A fighter could go into sentinel, while using advanced weapon training to deal big-people damage with a dagger.

Thoughts? ^_^

I'm myself having chain smoking redneck barbarian.
Dip that with one level of Bard/Skald and play banjo.
