Daily life in Heaven / Outer Planes

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Do angels and other Good outsiders just zip around the Material Plane fighting battles and sorting stuff out? Do they have a "life" as such? Like do they argue or have to work the land? Or toil to build their temples? If not, how is produce harvested, how are buildings built? I suppose as immortals they don't need sustenance, but do they not feast and make merry?

How about the petitioners? Do they just wander round in eternal bliss or do they have something meaningful to do?

Thanks for any answers/conjecture you have! :)

In Elysium (Chaotic Good) at least, they are probably doing what Elves are doing during their long time growing up: playing World of WarCraft.

There are some scenes in The Redemption Engine that show a bit of the "daily life" in Heaven. The previous novel to that one, Death's Heretic, shows a little bit of Axis and (sort of) the Maelstrom.

Remember the early scene in Pirates of the Caribbean where the Black Pearl raids the town? That happens everywhere in the Outer Planes on occasion!

The realms are places of the mind. On at least some of them, little work is needed. I imagine the angels spending their time shaping the concept of good as it is supposed to be. Anyway, I can think of few better qualified to do so. Beyond this, hobbies, art, peaceful lives, parties from time to time would be the basics.

What work is going on by petitioners on an upper plane is voluntary. Some places will have more constructive activity than others.

Some places may have a very goofy definition of constructive.

The divine realm of, say, Ragathiel, LG empyreal lord of wrath, is going to be radically different from the divine realm of, say, Ghenshau, LG empyreal lord of placidity.

Petitioners and exemplars who are inclined to follow a master or cause are going to congregate towards a master or cause whose interests coincide with their own.

And so Ragathiel's realm is going to be full of LG crusaders.

While Ghenshau's realm is going to be full of LG hippies =P

^Just looked up Ghenshau on www.pathfinderwiki.com -- listed as Lawful Good, but first entry in portfolio is Ignorance, and Worshippers include those seeking enlightenment . . . Whaaaaaat?

He's The Dude as a LG demigod, I think. I need to re-read his Chronicles of the Righteous entry at some point.

Some of the empyreal lords are pretty out there.

As I understand it petitioners either eventually become outsiders or merge with the plane itself as their mortal memories slip away.

Remember that from someone who's raised in a culture that's not obsessed with the ego the way Westerners are, that last is an ideal to strive for. (also... AC Clarke's Childhood's End)

In other words, transcendence.

Merging with the plane would amount to letting everything go and attaining Nirvana.

Which, IIRC, transcendence is the actual goal of Buddhism and related Eastern religions/philosophies.

Greatly depends on the deity. I imagine daily life as a worshipper of Desna probably includes a lot of stargazing, daydreaming, dreaming dreaming, walking, surfing Silver Surfer style, playing games of luck, and telling spooky stories around the barely glowing dead stars about lovecraftian horrors.

Daily life in Calistria's realm is... probably one giant hedonistic 24/7 party with a lot of private and not so private rooms.

Pray, pray, pray, sleep, wander while contemplating the wonder of the heavens, pray, pray.

I don't think any outsider except for the choral angel one, is even mentioned as being particularly devout in the bestiaries. I know none of the azata's are. Archons are too busy being an army to pray like that. Agathions are too busy being animal people and acting out natural animal instincts like hunting.
