Want to build a shocking grasp build.

Advice

I really like the spell shocking grasp as it reminds me of a popular technique in the anime Naruto named, chidori.

now heres the catch, I know that many of you are already probably screaming 'magus' but thats the thing. I don't want to use the magus just because I've heard that the shocking grasp build is so powerful and I don't want to build a character that would ruin a DM's game or upset the rest of the party.

now, I was thinking making this a rogue build with the major magic talent. does anyone have any other suggestion, Ideally I don't want to go wizard or sorcerer because i'd like a character who with the shocking grasp exception. doesn't focus on spells.

so does anyone have any idea's?

Ninja class for starters, see if you can get your gm to allow Unchained Ninja, the ninja tricks can replicate a bunch of Jutsu if you are interested in a Naruto-style character, a monk might also be interesting,

OH or an Elemental Ascetic with VMC monk that goes air(lightning) for the element and maybe look at ascetic style with your feats

You can still do Magus if you avoid the other things that boost Shocking Grasp. For example, don't take the Intensify feat, don't use a keen weapon, or don't take the Metamagic Master trait.

It's not that SG is particularly strong. It's that SG combo'ed with several other things is strong.

As said above, do magus and just don't metamagic the living hell out of it. Even intensify is absolutely fine if you don't use the traits to lower it.
For your concept the Magus is what you should use, hands down. Mix in the rime metamagic with frozen grasp (or whatever the spell is called) so as not to be a one trick pony and do some debuffs as well maybe?

There is a huge difference between using an OP/well optimized character and playing it that way all the time. Just because you can trivialize an encounter doesn't mean you have to. Hold back, see how things go, let the rest of the party do their thing. Then if needed clean up if things look like they will go south.

Dragon disciple sorcerer works very well for this. Has strong health, high strength, more spells, and even a small damage boost for the bloodline. You may not be a true ninja like naruto but you have just as much accuracy as a ninja class by mid levels and plenty of spells that could be your chakra abilities. If your human all you need to start with is spell focus and spell spec plus a trait and your doing 4 dice at level 1. Just keep your health as high as you can.

Ninja seems thematic, and you could get shocking grasp sneak attacks with vanishing trick or other methods. Fun!

Grab a Decoy Ring when you can afford it for "shadow clone" shenanigans.

Unchained Rogue with the Magic talent. You can Sneak attack with shocking grasp.

If you can convince your GM to let a Ninja take the Unchained version of the magic talents, I think that would be ideal. Doesn't seem too outlandish to ask for either.

I say, be an Aerokineticist, get electric blast, the kinetic blade talent, and flavor it as you stabbing your enemies with electricity.

Here are a few other possibilities. I know that you don't want to focus on spells, but with these three you can easily stock up on buffs, healing, and utility magic rather than blasts like a Magus.

(1) Occultists can get Shocking Grasp. If you want less focus on spells, Battle Host is a good archetype.

(2) The Magician Bard can use Expanded Repertoire to get Shocking Grasp at 2nd level. A Magician/Sound Striker is a fun combo, but definitely not overpowered.

(3) An Alchemist can cast Shocking Grasp by selecting it with the Spell Knowledge Discovery at 8th level. They actually cast the spell rather than make it into an Extract. The Crypt Breaker or Trap Breaker archetypes will get you trap abilities if you want to a bit Rogue-ish.

Natural weapons can do the cast through your attacks thing without being a Magus, so remember that when choosing your race.

Good point. I keep forgetting that rule.

With a name like Gisher, you should know all things caster-martial hybrid! For shame!

Dragon disciple would do this well. I wouls do blue or brass dragon sorcerer maybe crossblood with arcane for the quick metamagic ability since crossblood loses spells known, but not spells per day, and this is about specializing in one spell, so intensify and the like are a necessity, then armored hulk barbarian, take still spell, and finish Dragon disciple/Eldrich knight, for some serious power, casting in full plate through your claws or bite, and you can use your other spells knkwn for enhanced mobility, so you can get close enough to hit.

My shame is vast. I will now go pore over the rulebooks much as hot water is poured over a tea infuser.

Probably should have asked this earlier, Society play or home game? Which books allowed, etc?
