Id Rager confusion

Rules Questions

While rereading Occult Origins I noticed the Id Rager bloodrager archetype. While very interesting I am confused about certain aspects of the archetype.

1. Do the emotional focus powers apply with slams, and only slams, or could a weapon, let's say a scythe, be usable to trigger on-slam effects?
2. If not, does the archetype grant the user slams in the same way the Abyssal or Draconic bloodlines for bloodrager grant natural attacks?

From the product thread

1. only slams
2. it does not

Some are more useful than others for this reason.

Well, shite, why bother? Might as well give the archetype Extra Lay On Hands as a bonus feat, for all the good "If you should somehow get a slam attack, you can do this cool thing" does it.

Sorry to rant, but if an archetype gives you a power that kicks in when you do a thing,it had better be either a universal thing, a thing the archetype already lets you do, or is a racial archetype that hinges on racial abilities that may or may not translate to anybody else. Short of being a monster PC, dipping into another class, or relying on polymorph magic there aren't any ways to get slams, especially in the early levels where these 3 options are impractical.

TL;DR: The archetype should at least give slams during rage so the faux bloodline powers can function.

There's plenty of stuff that's good even if you don't have a slam.
Like Anger, it's first one makes your slam bigger, AND gives you power attack. Okay, so you miss out on slam damage, but you still get the power attack.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

My recommendation is allowing slam effects on up to two unarmed strikes per round.

My initial concept was a Fear Id Slayer kitted out to be really good at intimidating people using dazzling display, horrifying strike, and increase fear to make them leave him alone. The unarmed strike angle could work. My original intent was a Merciful Scythe, but fists work well enough.

yeah, that one's first ability has nothing for non-slams.

if nothing else you can dip one level of Synth Summoner for slam attacks from evolution points, a fear phantom might pair thematically well with a Psychopomp eidolon, after all, who doesn't fear death?

That does have the unfortunate downside of not being PFS legal

Somewhere someone made a list of the ways to get a slam attack for this class. maybe try searching for it? I'm busy now to do it myself.
