Imagine someone submitted a monster close to word count and missed a few spaces or required parts of the template. DQ for word count?

/me wonders how many entrants are going to go double check now

When I previewed, I actually ended up with less wordcount than what my word processor said. So, I think I'm good.

That is evil.

And this is why you never hit your word count spot on.

What happens if there is a DQ at this point? Does it just become Top 15, no alts anymore?

That would depend on a number of factors, but there certainly have been round 1 items that were cut because they were exactly at wordcount and forgot, for example, the item's name.

The other crucial questio0n is WHAT got forgotten. Remember that one of the things that gets you disqualified for this round is: "Submission does not contain all required information."

A host I make the final call on what's a case of bad choices and presentation, and what's "required information." If you give a monster an AC of 10, and didn't think to mention it's Dex bonus, or add in the chainmail you mention in it's equipment, I'd be inclined to think you did a bad job presenting information, and let the judges call you out for it and have the voters decide.
If you failed to list the AC line at all, I'd likely count that as not containing all required information, and you'd be disqualified.

We have, in fact, had a DQ already this round (who has been notified and replied so don't panic, if you haven't talked to me back and forth several times about it, it's not you).

And yes, we'll just have a Top 15 - no more alts for Season 9.
Last year I had an alternate ready from round 2 to go into round 3, because I was pretty sure Jason Keeley was going to get hired, and thus not be able to continue the contest, but that was an extremely rare case where we knew before the round even began that is was likely to lose someone as a result of them being so good we were going to DQ them ourselves (since employees can't participate).

Unfortunate news, but thanks for clarifying, Owen.

I'm bummed because I know who is it and what they were submitting as a monster.

My heart goes out to you, whoever you are. Every time I previewed my item using the submission tool and saw that my word count was over 600, I had a series of small heart attacks until I closed the window. What if I accidentally had clicked submit instead of preview? For some reason I keep thinking of this quote:

You should have let me see her, Captain. We should have done this as men - not with fire.

Me too.

Seriously.
Deciding who to disqualify is the hardest part of being host. Once I make that decision (almost always in consultation with numerous other people, but the final call is mine), is the hardest part of this job.
Contacting them and letting them know is my least favorite part.

It was a little disheartening, I am quite fond of my creature and was looking forward to seeing if others liked it as well. But I respect the decision made and those who made it. It just wasn't my year between this and the odd disappearing map description. There is some amusing irony in the case of an editor making a copy mistake at least. ;)

I know exactly what you mean about the preview feature! I had a lot of trouble getting it to work and every time I hit preview I had a mini stroke waiting to make sure it didn't go through!

At least I can say I entered once! And I wish everyone else the best of luck!

Hey, BJ...just FYI...I provided a full commentary/feedback for your monster submission despite the DQ. I've encouraged the other judges to do the same, and I've asked that they make it available to you however they can. FWIW, if everything had been in order, I'd probably have recommended it to advance to the next round.

Thank you, that means a lot! I had a lot of fun making it at least and would be happy to see the commentary!

If you would like and are able, PM me any copy you have and I'll happily give you some feedback.
