Their statement pretty much says that the majority of their gamers communicate via 3rd party sites rather than on their forums.
Not sure if that's true.
An area where like minded gamer who play the same game system can share their ideas and products to foster more gaming is a good thing. Although the vast majority of gamers don't use the forums much. Even here. Probably like 10% (wild guess).

It does seem insane. When 5e first started had to get bunch of developer clarifications off Twitter and I thought that method sucked. Now it's gonna be the official way? Boo-urns.

To me, this is just another example of Wizards not understanding their user base. Stuff like this is exactly why Paizo made Pathfinder to begin with, and why it's become so popular.

Being one of WOTC's primary competitors, I don't imagine the vast majority of these forumites will flock to Paizo; most will probably head to EN World and other gaming-focused websites not directly attached to a producing company.
That said, we probably will get a new influx of members, and the 4/5E forums here on Paizo will probably start getting a lot more traffic. (I have those forums long since triangled away due to the Edition Wars so it may already have begun.)
But yeah this seems like a really poor move. I'm at work so I can't see the announcement (WOTC's sites are banned by work filter) so can someone tell me if there's a shutdown date already announced?

Choosing to retire a former foundation of our community was not an easy decision, but we feel that we must adjust our communications structure to reflect where conversations about Wizards of the Coast games are taking place.
Social media has changed significantly over the last ten years, and discussions about games aren't exclusive to company-hosted forums. The majority of community conversation takes place on third-party websites (such as Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and many other fantastic community-run websites), and it is up to us to evolve alongside our players.
We encourage past and current users to retrieve any information you want to retain from the Community Forums for both Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering. The shutdown will occur on October 29, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. PT. We want to provide enough time for our forum members to move their content, and we recognize that given our forum's vibrant user base and extensive history, this may take time. Any information still on the forums on the cut-off date will be deleted.
Thank you to all of our past and current forum users. You helped build our community into what it is now, and we look forward to continuing to interact with you on our many active social platforms.

I have not been on those forums since the days of 3.5. Hey they shut down print production of Dungeon and Dragon magazine and they were around much longer than the Wizards forums.

Seriously, shutting down their forums? How could they think that's a good idea???
I seriously doubt that they would be coming HERE.
I'm thinking that ENworld is going to be getting a huge influx of people though.

I hate to express this out loud, but it really feels like Hasbro is trying to shut Wizards down slowly and the group there now is in charge of keeping it going until the lights get shut off. I mean, a year in to 5e, they should be promoting the hell out of the game at this point, (It still has that new game smell. We've got these excellent campaigns out for it. Our forum site has this many active users on it. Adventurers League has this many games every week.) But, its a contraction.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it is just a bean counter maneuver looking for ways to save money that doesn't cost a developer job. But still, that's not exactly an insignificant cut. I mean, if you want to have a conversation about D&D, read up on someone's unique monk build, post a suggestion for some homebrew mechanic and hear what others have to say, is Twitter the best place for that? I don't think so. Even Facebook and G+ do not seem like optimal place for something like that. The format of Reddit would lead me to say, yea that's a decent way of doing things, but honestly that site is just not one where I hang out at.

We don't advocate gossip or drama from other online communities on paizo.com. However, we acknowledge the subset of fans here who enjoy other editions and participating in those communities, and are OK with giving them a space to discuss this news. We ask that the discussion stay civil and respectful, free of edition warring, and of purposefully inflammatory comments from this point forward. If it starts getting heated in here, or we see baiting/personal attacks/et cetera, we will be locking the thread.
EDIT: Also moved this into the D&D subforum and merged with the other thread.

I have friends who are serious 5th ed players. I wonder how this is going to affect them.

I haven't really visited the WotC forums since they let their chatrooms die several years ago (Was made with old code, was allowed to exist until it crashed).
Regardless if you feel your clientele use other 3pp sites most of the time you should still keep an active forum in order to keep in touch with your clientele. When I played 3rd edition, WotC didn't really have a presence on their forums, they had WizOs that policed them but rarely did official personnel from WotC reply to things on the forums.
Here, Paizo keeps a personal touch and the staff seems to constantly visiting the forums and reply to things, drop hints, and engage with their customers. I've even seen them say things along the lines of "Not going to say anything on the subject other then I am keeping an eye on this thread because the opinions here could be important to future decisions."
Even though I haven't used their forums in years, mainly cause I am no longer a customer for them, it still feels like their just politely telling everyone to "Get off the yard, but please continue to buy our stuff."
From a business perspective, I have to wonder how distancing yourself further from your customers is a wise choice, even if it only effects 5% or less of your clientele. At the very least it provides direct feedback of their products to them and what people think or want. (Or are they blaming that feedback they gained from their forums for several of their past mistakes in recent years?)

I definitely didn't in any way mean to start any edition wars, I just thought it was an important piece of news to put out there. I do think that this might upset some players of 5E enough to consider coming on over to Pathfinder, which I'd be personally happy with, since my freelance work is all in the realm of Pathfinder. :)
I have several friends that play 5e...but I don't think they actually went to the forums there.
I think if they spend any time with 5e online it's via twitter, or other forms on interaction.
Perhaps they are indicative of the majority of the modern audiences that play 5e?
That would mean the forums don't represent much in regards to your typical 5e player, and hence focusing spending money in other areas could benefit the majority of players more than spending it on forums?
These are people that spend a LOT of time on their phones though, so things that trend more for the mobile platform would probably appeal to them more than trying to read forums on that format (I KNOW people read forums on their phones, just saying my friends who play 5e don't...but they still do a lot of social media via their phones).
I play equal parts Pathfinder and 5e these days. And I vastly prefer the Paizo forums anyway. SmiloDan, Lorathorn, TheRavyn, and company are having very fun conversations in the "D&D 4th Edition (and Beyond)" subforum already. I imagine even if I totally switch to 5e once my Jade Regent campaign wraps up I'll still visit these forums and buy world-building material and APs from Paizo.
I'm a big 5e fan but this decision by Wizards affects me not at all. But I don't speak for everyone.

Agreed. There was just something about the Wizards forums that wasn't intuitive. For me, it felt hard to navigate and search.
Let's face it, the best venue for all those "I'm playing D&D since 1974, now what are those PDF things I keep hearing about?" people is Tumblr. ;-)
Lol! I've almost been playing that long, but I'm glad I'm not one of those... I love me some PDF, and I've never touched tumbler. On topic though, I fear the end is near for Wizards. The Dungeons and Dragons dept. anyways. Sad how far they have fallen.

I heard that this has been their best edition release yet in terms of sales and they have computer games and now a film in the works as well. I don't see an end to Wizards anytime in the near future.
