Just curious.I no longer have that information stored in my head, as I haven't had to think about it for a couple years. About all I can tell you is we're using a modified version of the Schulze Method. And the most important thing is the number of voters who prefer A to B or A to C or B to C; whether you personally prefer A to B to C isn't a factor.
We had a discussion on the boards at length when the voting was first introduced back in 2012-2013. HERE is the thread in question, if anyone is interested.

The fact that you haven't seen your item means very little. Even people who vote a lot rarely see their items reliably.
If there was a cull at 2PM Pacific yesterday, then the items seen today (8/27) on the item spreadsheet are probably very close to showing all the survivors. Don't lose complete hope because there's still room for more survivors, but the odds start getting slim (maybe 10 - 20% if you think the cull was shallow).

Haven't seen any posts from any of the official Superstar peeps today.
My bet is that they haven't yet realized that they didn't officially tell us. Once they notice, and verify it happened, I think we'll see something pretty quick.
Unless they just enjoy the taste of our tears.

Is there a reason why no one has posted anything official as to whether there has been a fourth cull? I would think with all the confusion someone would just post a simple yes or no to help those of us in full-fledged panic mode.
They enjoy watching us squirm. Especially with this round being more than half-way over.

Easy there, buddy. I'm sure the mods or those in charge of making those announcements are just busy. with other stuff. Best thing we can do right now is just keep voting and updating the list. The more we vote and scan the contestants, the easier it will be to update the list when the announcement is made.

The cull was alluded to in a post. I think the tech folks are busy trying to fix the voting title error rather than checking in on the forums.

There are more important tasks the staff than watching all the posts. They also mentioned that telling people exactly when the cull will happen affects the voting, & that affects the accuracy of the data.
The announcement that it would happen yesterday is as close as we are likely to get.

for anyone who read an angry tone in my previous post--no, it's not anger. like, at ALL. it's pure terror (hyperbole alert) at the prospect of having been culled in The Cull That Was Not a Cull.
I don't know if this will help, but if it happened the way it seems to have happened you are far from alone.

To be frank for a moment; while I understand the enthusiasm and desire to follow your item as it moves through voting, and I empathize with the stress and excitement of entering the competition, if you find yourself in full-fledged panic mode over this, I would recommend you take a moment to move away from your computer, possibly get outside or watch some TV, read a book, etc to take your mind off of this a bit. The best case scenario is that you advance to the next round, at which point, you may not want to have been on heightened alert and stress levels for several days beforehand. The worst case scenario is that you don't advance at which point, and no amount of stress will change that. I guess my point is, go easy on yourselves. Good Luck!

i completely agree except that this sort of stress is what helps me produce my best stuff, lol. i'm VERY grateful for your confirmation!! it tells me that if my item was seen last night at 11 pm EST, it is not culled. that gives me hope.
however, i will not be moving away from my computer. i read on a website that doing that will make me die to death. i think the only solution is to either vote HARDER or do this

(serious--thank you SO MUCH for the update!!!)

Yup, I totally agree. It took two days for my item to appear after the first cull. At first I was bummed but then I went out with the family and forgot about it and several days later was surprised when I was still in the contest. It was nice.

Much the same here. When I thought I had fallen to the 1st cull, I was disheartened but I made my peace with it rather quickly. It was completely different from the storm of disappointment that submerged me last year (which was my first participation in the contest). It was a good surprise to learn days later that my item had been seen.
That serene feeling was there again this morning when I was almost sure that my item would have been culled. And when I saw that it had survived, my foremost emotion was dread at having to work and rework my putative map entry ;-)

I had the same feeling when i woke up this morning to a buddy who helped workshop my item telling me that i had survived the "last" cull now I have to go back to trying to make a decent map in the midst of beginning a bunch of graduate classes and working full time :(

This is kind of the same boat I'm in. It's a good thing. (Though for now I have to get off the boards and voting and go meet with my advisor)

Considering the items I am seeing today and that we have the week-end left for voting, I think a last cull would be a smashing idea ;-)
I'm inclined to disagree. This fourth cull was a brutal one. There has been a lot of emotion in these forums the past 48 hours. Quite a few are upset, frustrated, and confused. (I'm saying that in a positive light)
I think another cull before top 32 would only serve to elevate the tension. The heartache is real because, in a way, we all seek to know that our ideas are valid; especially in a contest where the outcome is completely determined by 100% of the public vote.
My 2 copper? Let's just keep everything to this, and await the top 32. It's only my opinion, though. I'm not out to tell the staff how to run the contest. ^.^

This might be tinfoil hat worthy, and if it is I will take it to the correct thread, but I suspect either another stealth cull or a rolling cull has taken place. It has been 2 days since last cull, and we are (at the time of this posting) hanging just 11 items seen today below that magic 82% retention number.
I bet free workshopping and critiques one has gone down.

It's too early in the day to suspect a stealth cull. It is very common to be at this percentage of live items at this time of day. There is a very large voting contingent that comes on line at noon Pacific time.
EDIT: In fact, so far all the calls have been increasing in percentage of live items culled. The number of items that have not been seen yet today would be a smaller cull then either Cull 3 or Cull 4 (in percentage terms), and that seems unlikely to me.

I personally feel that another cull will give even more people another refined step in how well they did, thanks to the magnificent crowd sourced work of the items seen sheet.
Before this year, you had 4 categories with which to judge how well your item did in voters eyes. Top 32 - Top 100 (or 89) - Not Culled - Culled.
Now we have at least 6 categories - Top 32 - Survived 4 culls - Survived 3 culls - survived 2 culls - survived 1 cull - initial cull/DQ.
And that is if they don't do another cull, or announce the top 100 also.
One of my biggest frustrations in previous contests was not knowing if I was 101 or 501 in the "order". There is a lot more soul searching I have to do if I am 501, where as if I am 101 I know I am getting close. With the multiple culls, we all now have a very good idea where on the ladder we were. This alone makes the critique we will get afterwards SO MUCH more valuable.
My first item I ever submitted had lots of people who loved it, and lots of people who hated it in the critique. Translate that to this year, and pretend I got culled the 4th time around. That in and of itself is a very valuable piece of information for how that item's flaws affected it in the voting process.
I could keep going but I realized I am rambling. I would be in favor of another cull. and another if it were even possible. The more steps we have to determine what category we are in, the better the learning experience can be, in my opinion.

It's hard to distance yourself from the process. I don't ultimately know how helpful having the spreadsheet is when it ratchets up the anxiety, but the other side of the coin is... are the late culls as helpful, or do they discourage voting outside of those people dedicated to voting? I don't know, it's hard to say. Probably a bit of a chicken and egg thing. The contest evolved with each passing year, and I think that all sides work hard to keep up.

I'm seeing the same items over and over again, however I can confirm this is the system at work. It is independent of cull status.
Weighing in on the previous discussion -- I would very much like to vote on the top 32 items personally; the smaller the item pool the greater chance I (and others) will have of this. Since there's no judge input on this round more culls = better culls, insuring everyone gets a chance to have their votes heard.

Wait, what? They announced a top 100 last year? I know the item I submitted last year made it past the cull (different than this year's item), but I was not aware that they announced the top 100. Anyone have a link?

They did not, no. Last year there was no top 100.

We did one earlier this afternoon. Not sure an exact time for when it finished though. Good luck!
I'm counting that as a win for me. However, I was planning on doing critiques and workshopping anyway, so this was really just a win-win.
