Arcane base class?

Advice

Hello everyone,

I've got some players interested in the arcane archer prestige class but we all feel like it's time it got a face lift to a full base class. Couple of reasons why we think this,

1. its been around for a long time and was fine in older additions where prestige classes were a greater focus but now base classes and archetypes are the mainstay.

2. It simple takes to long to get into the meaty part of the class and actually feel like an arcane archer.

3. Finally, I personally think it's a cool concept that should be given it's due.

I believe this is best done in the form of an archetype for the magus. We are almost there with the mymidarch but more focus on the archery part.

What do you folks think? Is there a base class out there someone has created that I missed, I've check around but was not overly satisfied with what I found. Perhaps someone has some good advice.

Thanks

You're not alone in this. I've seen this discussed so many times so it's definitely in demand. It's not something I've personally had a great deal of interest in so I haven't checked but I'm sure there are some homebrew stuff for it. Honestly I think the only reason there isn't a magus archetype for it is because the folks at Paizo would prefer not to invalidate the Arcane Archer Prestige class. [insert obligatory Pazio never listens rant here]

I'm actually doing the final playtests on just such a class right now :)

I'm wondering if entering as Bloodrager with an Adaptive Composite bow is any good.

awesome will you post it when you are done?

I suspect we haven't seen a Paizo arcane archer class, because archery is already rather OP as a combat style. So making a class that does archery but "better" is never going to feel balanced.

If you change myrmidarch magus so that spell combat works with ranged weapons I think it would be just fine. Not exactly the same as the arcane archer, but it's fine.

Most people only go two levels into arcane archer anyways for the Imbue Arrow ability (mostly to shoot antimagic fields at people). The other abilities have too limited a number of uses per day to really be useful. Beyond which, the spells available to the magus can really help make up for it anyways.

Melkiador is right though, if you fix spell combat for the myrmidarch, you basically have a better archer overall. The magus arcana abilities can make up for the reduced BAB as well as having access to more magic than most classes that perform archery. It would be combining the most potent martial combat style with the most potent ability in the game (magic) in a way that is better than anything else has done.

Only the warpriest would come close with his ability to self buff as swift actions while making full attacks.

I'm onboard with this, provided it's done right. My background's in the Might & Magic computer games, which had the Archer as its resident warrior-sorcerer hybrid from the very beginning - I find it a bit amusing that, by contrast, D&D proper floundered for such a long time to achieve a good specimen of such a thing (and I'm still not that satisfied).

One idea I had that I think would be clever was if, contrary to what many would be accustomed to, this class was predisposed to using weapons at range, but preferring magic for melee (like, they'd get most of the nasty poking spells) - though they'd still be competent with melee weapons and ranged spells.

Well, I can't post it for free, but it will absolutely be widely available once it's ready to be released :)
