Auto turrets - Thought exercise

Advice

I like stuff that you can throw out and automatically fires upon the enemy. My go-to summon are Lantern Archons.

Anyway, I'd like to branstorm/crowdsource ideas. There are two related, but seperate instances of auto-turrets I'm interested in.

First is mobile. Spells are an excellent example, but this is pretty well covered under Summon Monster. Though if there are other such set and forget spells I'd be curious about that. Also, in this category are items or other such things you could pull out of your pocket and then run away while they fire upon the enemy. In a sci-fi game this would be something like a portable laser turret.

Stationary has more options, I think. This would include something that sits on a tower or city wall that automatically fires upon anything that gets too close. Animated siege crossbow comes to mind, though expensive. Perhaps also undead archers in a stone tower with only one window facing the direction you want them to fire. If they are capable of using a bow and cant otherwise escape you'd just have to supply them with arrows. Though I dont think mindless undead are capable of using a bow.

Mobile:

Stationary:

If you play a Cleric of a deity that uses a ranged weapon like Bow or Crossbow; you can use Spiritual Weapon as a literal turret. Since it's a force effect, you can also use the Toppling Spell Metamagic Feat to knock people prone.

Actually they can:

Here's the quotes from the two most obvious mindless undead:

"A skeleton retains all the natural weapons, manufactured weapon attacks, and weapon proficiencies of the base creature."

"A zombie retains all the natural weapons, manufactured weapon attacks, and weapon proficiencies of the base creature."

As for auto-turrets, treat them like traps with resetting ammo (or resetting spells) and magical sensors for triggers. We just need to imagine a way for the turret to tell friend from foe (or deploy them where nobody cares). After all, it would be awkward to defend a city gate with an auto-turret that kills all the merchants, farmers, travelers, and even city watch who try to go in or out of the gate.

Or for more fun, make auto-tourettes that magically hurl invective and insults at passers-by...

Mobile: I've always liked the idea of Golems with Guns. Just the idea of this giant rock/stone/wood/wahterver thing walking around with a cannon in his chest.

Maybe a Balistae on a Wagon? Automated pocket minions you can throw out like Pokeballs? Maybe ones that fly with vials of Alchemic Fire as a payload?

Stationary? Bound outsiders (elementals, devils, demons, angels, legendary slugs), enchantments, magical traps, animated buildings, undead manning artillary, intelligent thorn bushes? How about WALL OF (anything - Fire?)?

just my 2cp.

It doesn't matter what favored weapon your deity has, ranged or melee. The spiritual weapon has no speed, reach, range increment, etc. For all intents and purposes, it's just a force damage-over-time spell that visually looks like a weapon. The only difference between different weapons is the crit threat range and multiplier.

I guess that's true, even if it's a melee weapon it still just automatically moves to and attacks whatever you direct it to, which is functionally the same as a ranged weapon: "Even if the spiritual weapon is a ranged weapon, use the spell's range, not the weapon's normal range increment, and switching targets still is a move action."

So actually it doesn't matter what weapon your using.

heres a little thing i found

Syringe Stirge (Su)

Prerequisite(s) Alchemist 6

Benefit(s) As a full-round action, you can expend two daily uses of bombs to create a syringe stirge, a tiny construct primed with a bomb (if you have multiple types of bombs, you must select which type the syringe stirge carries when created). Undirected, they take no actions except to flock around you in your square and follow you as best they can. They can be attacked normally, but gain cover while occupying your square. As a swift action, you can order one of your syringe stirges to attack an enemy it can see. Once ordered to attack that enemy, the syringe stirge will continue to attack every round, attempting to attach and deliver its payload

A syringe stirge has all of the statistics of a stirge but lacks the blood drain ability.

If it ends its turn attached to an opponent, it injects your bomb into the opponent's bloodstream, dealing damage as a direct hit plus the alchemist's Intelligence modifier (as the Throw Anything feat—this injection is a direct attack and doesn't deal splash damage. A syringe stirge dies immediately after injecting its bomb. A syringe stirge lasts for 1 minute per alchemist level or until destroyed; if it has not attached to an enemy before the end of its life span it and its bomb payload fall inert.

suicidal walking bomb bird? constructs that follow you around and attack when commanded.
