Ranger with dead animal companion

In last PFS session I played, my lvl 8 Ranger's animal companion (lvl 5 small cat) died. What are my options now?

1) Can I raise animal companion and how much is a cost of that?

2) Can I buy new lvl 5 small cat in PFS and how much is a cost of lvl 5 small cat if it is possible to buy one?

3) Is there any other possibility to get new animal companion when old one dies.

Tnx!

You have options 1 and 3, since the cost for a level 5 cat is not listed in any book.

For option 1, you'd need a Raise spell of some sort, and the spell used will probably depend on the mode of PFS (regular vs Core). Raise Dead in the core rulebook will run you a little over 5k gold worth in diamond dust. If you have access to the Raise Companion spell, it will cost about 1k of diamond.

For +3, you can go commune with nature and find yourself a new companion. Just be mindful of the FAQ on how many tricks your new companion starts with and the rules for teaching it new ones: FAQ

Obviously, option 3 is the low cost option, but it may be more flavorful to get Old Trusty raised. Have fun!

The raise animal companion spell will cost a total of 1,450 gp to have cast on your animal companion.

If you go this route, your animal companion will also gain two permanent negative levels, as explained in the raise dead spell.

These can be removed through 2 castings of restoration. Each casting will cost 1,280 gp.

The total shell-out for this process is
+1,450 gp
+1,280 gp
+1,280 gp
——————
=4,010 gp

Edit: I don't know if this will work, but since it has been clarified that one can spend 5 prestige for a body recovery when our character is merely in prison, perhaps a character's faction would be willing to get a raise dead on an animal companion for 16 prestige? I don't know the answer to that.

Do I have to pay for new companion and which level will be new companion?

There is no cost, and it would be 5th level, but follow the link David provided to see how the new companion's tricks would be calculated.

The rules for replacing an animal companion are covered in the Core Rulebook under Druid.

  • You don't need to pay anything to replace an animal companion.

  • The new animal companion has all the same qualities and abilities as if it had been your animal companion all along, EXCEPT that it begins only with its bonus tricks. Additional tricks can be added (with Handle Animal checks) at a rate of one per chronicle.

Unless there has been a clarification the FAQ says that you may attempt to teach the new AC a number of tricks up to the number of ranks in Handle Animal.

One per chronicle per rank in handle animal.

Presumably your level 8 character could have as many as 8 ranks in handle animal.

Your new pet will start with all of the bonus tricks listed in on the druid animal companion table, plus you could train it a number of tricks equal to your ranks in handle animal (make sure you can take 10 to meet the dc to teach the trick). Up to a maximum number of tricks known as normal (2 x Int Score + bonus tricks).

You can't buy a level 5 animal companion.

If you don't raise your kitty nature will find a way to send you a new one. He or she will arrive with no tricks known except the bonus tricks. I recommend "Down" and "Defend"

You can give him one trick per rank in handle animal "once per session" . The rules don't specify if that's before, or after the adventure so ask the DM. At 5th level hopefully you'll have them nearly trained after one session, with attack attack being a big priority.

*tap tap taps a pointy stick* So what happened to your LAST kitty...? We should review some companions best management practices to see if we can avoid this happening again ..

My mistake. Thanks for the correction, guys.

I'm thinking he took the poor kitty into a fight above her might.

Rangers really need to train their companions better in order to be in the thick of combat.

Ranger animal companion without boon companion, level 5 animal companion against CR 8+ I'm guessing

The trap is responsible for death of my cat.

I see this quite a lot, contrary to popular opinion animal companions are not rogues.

And who's responsible for the pet being ON the trap?

Probably either the Follow or Guard command, I'm thinking...

Yeah, for a Ranger without Boon Companion, keep that AC well out of any sort of danger zone.

BTW here is a PFS FAQ regarding replacing a dead companion creature.

I was in trap too. My AC was behind me.

The Exchange 5/5

So it was the heel command, coupled with a failed perception to notice the trap.

It's 3 x Int score + bonus tricks.

So for an average animal companion, if you have 6 ranks in Handle Animal, you're back to full with one chronicle.
