Something super, mega, awesome happened yesterday! Yesterday, we hit our $200 per product milestone, which means we can now pay our freelancers 5 cents a word!
This is an incredible achievement and one that we couldn’t have achieved without the 47 rather marvellous patrons of our Patreon campaign. Just four months ago we were 1 cent a word–we’ve come a long way and I’m tremendously proud of what we’ve achieved together.
Of course, I’m greedy and we are not done yet. Our next milestone is already set. When we get to $300 per release we’ll up our pay again to 7 cents a word. At 5 cents a word Raging Swan Press should be able to secure even more work from your favourite designers. At 7 cents a word I’m going to start pestering famous design people (to write for us). If you want to help me pester them, please consider signing up.
Onwards!

Tomorrow, our patrons get hold of Jacob Trier's Places of Power: The Fragrant Tower days before it goes on general release. Sign up today, and you can get it early as well! (And you can help fund even better pay rates for Raging Swan's heroic freelancers!)

Thanks very much, Matthew Gushta for hurling yourself into Raging Swan's Patreon campaign. It's tremendously decent of you.

Hmm, thanks guys. I got something in the works based on some 3pp stuff that I was thinking of selling to the author.
Can you clarify Korak: Do you mean you have a derivative work (something based on a published work) you'd like to pitch to the publisher (who may be the author) of said work?

There's no set rate. Some companies pay you a percentage of sales, and some pay quite low rates. The average seems to be around 0.03 cents per word, or about $150 for every 5000 words you write. So five cents a word is pretty good.
I've tried doing royalty based pay, and I hate it. The admin is an ongoing pain I'd rather do without! I much prefer a flat, one-time fee for the work. it's neat, tidy and everyone knows what they are getting!

I kinda feel the same as Creighton up there. A flat pay seems much less of a hassle. As for the work I'm doing, it's a prestige class similar to the Mystic Theurge. I want to mix two of a particular producer's classes who have (in my opinion) very complimentary abilities. That's all I'm willing to say about it at this point.

Personally, I would avoid anyone who wants you to accept royalties instead of actual, set pay upon completion of the work you are hired/commissioned to do. I know some smaller companies will try to get freelancers (particularly newer freelancers) to go for royalty based pay, but most companies don't.
@Korak - interesting (I created the Theurge Base Class in the New Paths Compendium from Kobold Press)
You may already know this, but be sure that the classes you want to use are open content.

Seeing as how I'm trying to sell it to owner of said classes why?

I think I missed that part. So ... you want to take two published classes created by someone else, create a prestige class based on those classes ... and then try to sell that prestige class to either the author that created the classes or the company that actually published them?
Have you approached the company/author about this? You still should make sure both classes are open content - if the owner of the classes has not made the classes open content and they pass on whatever you came up with, you can't do anything else with it (i.e try to pitch it to another company). It's *always* good to make sure you are on solid ground from a legal standpoint before doing something with another person's / company's work.
We should probably turn this thread back over to Creighton now ... :)

Eh, if he doesn't want it it's homebrew I might use in a home game. And he's a one man company so owner of classes and company so selling to him no problem. Honestly I suspect a similar prestige class is on it's way at some point. I'm just hoping what I do gives him enough of a jump start on it he's willing to pay me some pittance.
