(Interest Check only) 1st Edition Adventure played with 5th Edition rules

Recruitment

As stated in the thread title, this is a preliminary check to determine if there is enough interest in playing a classic "old-skool" 1st Edition adventure using the quasi "old-skool" ruleset: 5E.

I have not yet settled on which 1E module to use and might allow the group to decide (assuming this game even gets off the ground...). The three modules I am considering are: The Village of Hommlet, Against the Cult of the Reptile God or The Sinister Secret of saltmarsh.

I would likely be making a few tweaks/houserules to give the game a little more of the old-skool flavor. I can definitively state that the following race or class options would not be available: drow elf, half-orc, dragonborn and tiefling races as well as the monk and warlock classes. (I'm aware that half-orcs and monks were in the 1E PHB but I have never allowed them in my games.) I would not be using any of the supplemental material that Wizards has put out in Unearthed Arcana or the Elemental Evil companion material, just the Basic rules and Player's Handbook.

Characters would be built using the 27 point buy system in the 5E PHB with max HP at 1st level. Multiclassing and feats would NOT be used but a variant human option would still be available with an ability score increase used in place of the feat.

Posting frequency would be set at a minimum of three posts per week. I would probably only post three days a week but would likely make multiple posts on those days.

Very interested in trying this. Was thinking about doing the same thing in my tabletop game, and this would be a great forum to check it out.

Interested! I'm enjoying the 5E ruleset, and would be curious to see an older adventure.

Liberty's Edge

Grand Lodge

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

I am interested.

I would be interested, haven't had any chance to play the 5th edition rules yet but I'm definitely curious.

and a vote for aging adventures in alliteration

Possibly interest. Have you thought about what elemental stuff you will allow?

I would be interested in trying this as well

Count me in!

Would it be GDQ? Please say it is GDQ!

Actually, any would be awesome...

Lantern Lodge

Interested in trying this, would love to try out the new bard.

I'd be interested also.

Liberty's Edge

Ooo...that would be amazing GDQ is amazing, but start with Slavers and move into G1!! Make an epic out of it!!

This guy gets it!

Awww.. No monk.. *retracts interest*.

Liberty's Edge

Interested. More details please. :-)

Dark Archive

Interested here, as well. I'm planning something similar once my current PbP wraps up, but would love to play in another 5e game.

Work in progress. Mountain Dwarf Wizard with Guild Artisan background. Will be specializing as a transmuter. Is a member of mason's/stonecutter's guild. Proficient with mason's tools and wood carver's tools.

I understand why you don't want the races, but why not the new spells?

I think it would only be fair to tell you that as I am trying to keep the "old-skool" flavor, I would be less likely to select a PC that doesn't fit that "vibe"...like a dwarven wizard, for instance. ;)

I made a Human Barbarian that needs to be re-stated, and Greyhawkized (Is that a new word>>>), but would be fun to play.

Liberty's Edge

Is/was there enough interest? Is this now a recruiting thread, or will you open a new one? Thinking of an elven druid, myself...just to be different (I have not tried a druid yet for 5e).

@DM Tayem: Played the G-series back in the 70's and it has been my most treasured memories...killing giants, learning the secret behind them..underground travel...it was all there!!

A word of warning: I tried running "Keep on the Borderlands" using 5e rules, failing to realize that an individual goblin in 5e is easily a match for a 1st level PC, and that 6 of them will wipe out a party.

Keep a VERY close eye on stats and capabilities, rather than on the names of the monsters.

I'm running PVQ in 5e, and so far the Goblin encounters have been tough, but not overwhelming. Now that the party has reached second level, they seem to be having an easier time with the dungeons first level encounters

If this is a thing, I'll be throwing together a Human Cleric.

"Praise Pelor"

I may have to do a Dwarven Fighter

Grumble. Ok, high elf wizard coming up in a bit. Do you have a deadline?

This seems to be simply an interest check and not yet recruitment for a game.

This player (1/2 Elf Rogue) is pretty much ready to go with minor background revisions once the setting is determined.

Okay, there appears to be enough preliminary interest in this trip down memory lane, so I will start an actual recruitment thread later today with full details on the adjustments I intend to make to the 5E rules to get a little closer to the "old-skool" feel I am looking for.

Looking forward to it...

I am curious to see how your interpretation lines up next to mine

Here are my house rules for 5e that I am using to try and get a 1e feel

Linky-poo

Lantern Lodge

After reading your houserules, I am withdrawing my application.

Same here, best of luck with this game.

Dark Archive

Wow, that is a lot to keep track of. Will have to think about things.

Pathfinder Lost Omens Subscriber

I'm probably going to drop out also. While the changes do make it more like the "Old School" game in some ways, I kind of like some things about the "New School". Good luck, and have fun guys.

I too am withdrawing. I have attempted recruitment several times with rule changes to 5E, and it has not worked out. The game stalls and gets bogged down. The major attraction of 5E is that it is simplistic in its application and harkens back to 2nd edition. I am running a Greyhawk campaign successfully with my tabletop game, and DaWay is successful with his 5E PbP with really no rule changes.

Please do NOT post that you are dropping out of the recruitment in this thread. I would like this thread to "die" and drop down the board. If you absolutely feel you must comment on the fact that you don't like the house rules I have instituted, do so in the actual recruitment thread although I'd prefer you didn't clutter up that thread just to say you don't want to play with the house rules I have set up.

Thanks.

Don't take offense, DM Grognard. I am just trying to give you some helpful hints from past experiences. It is, after all, your game.
