Archetypes and UNCHAINED! Monks

I'm curious as to how well the various Monk archetypes can fit into the new chassis for the class from Pathfinder UNCHAINED!

On the face of it, it looks like UNCHAINED! Monks will need their own archetypes given some of the class features some archetypes replace are now optional features.

Grand Lodge

Are unchained Monks still required to be Lawful?

Yup. That doesn't really bother me, though. I'm more wondering if it's compatible with Flowing Monk, since that archetype fits the character I'm designing right now.

Grand Lodge

Unchained Monk doesn't' receive Diamond Body so it can't be replaced. So No the archetype would not work.

Isn't this, like... the THIRD thread discussing this?

Long-and-short:

The Unchained Monk may as well be treated as an Alternate Class like the Ninja, thus only 1-2 Archetypes actually work with it.

And while Qinggong DOES technically work, that Archetype is completely redundant with how the Unchained Monk already functions, save for a few extraneous abilities like Blood Crow Strike.

Darnit all. Is there a way to build an UNCHAINED! Monk that can perform "a soft art consisting of dodges, holds and strikes designed to turn the energy of the attackers back against themselves?"

And yeah, this is probably the third thread or so. I am an idiot and could not locate them.

It's called a 1-level dip into Swashbuckler to gain Opportune Parry & Riposte.

Boom.

Mind Blown.

Done.

Or Amateur Swashbuckler if you don't feel like dipping :).

On a more relevant side, it's likely upcoming products will release various archetypes to work with the unchained monk. I'd be surprised if Paizo was unwilling or uninterested in re-implementing some of the more interesting archetypes.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Martial Artist still works, yes?

Didn't you JUST get your answer in another thread that the book itself says that NONE of the previous archetypes work with the Unchained Monk?

Martial Artist may work sans that clause in PFU, so that's likely one of the only ones that does.

I suppose I forgot.

I suppose SOMEONE, like YOU, doesn't make MISTAKES, being PERFECT and all.

I've started a new thread in the Advice section regarding UNCHAINED! monks for the reasons I brought up here with greater details about the character I'm trying to build using these kinds of rules. Feel free to join me there to continue the conversation with greater context. And thank you all for your prompt response to my question! :)

Didn't the blog and the book outright stated that unchained monk is not compatible with any previous monk archetype?

From what I have checked it looks like Unchained Monk and Nimble guard works as well.

Nimble Guard

Evasion gets subbed out for Defensive Aid

Still mind gets subbed out for Nimble Reflexes

Purity of body gets subbed out for Defensive Mastery

Wholeness of body(So if you take wholeness of body as one of you ki power picks at 6th level then you would qualify for Guardian Feline at 7th level) Wholeness of Body gets subbed out for Guardian Feline.

Now I don't think pazio would make these Unchained classes non compatible with any of the archetypes because this would cut people off from buying the other books if that was the case.

Officially none of the archetypes work with the unchained monk. There's a line in the Monk's entry that says that none of the previous archetypes work with this monk.

Enlightened Warrior still works for you non-lawful needs. ;)

Grand Lodge

Ah, but Enlightened Warrior is no longer available in PFS.

Oh, I was unaware it was a PFS question. Or what the PFS legality of it ever was for that matter. (I don't do PFS for various reasons)

EDIT: The additional resources page lists this for blood of angels: "Heritages: all heritages, and associated traits, on pages 21-23 are legal." So wouldn't adopted [idyllkin(Enlightened Warrior)] work?

Grand Lodge

Well, it seemed worth mentioning.

PFS is not all bad.

You can run them at home, with friends.

Oh, I'm just saying PFS doesn't work for me. I know some people play PFS all the time and if it works for them, more power to them. I took your other post as a reply to mine and didn't get that you just putting out the information for PFS users.

Some of the archetypes can be converted with ease. For example, for Monk of the Four Winds, just have Slow Time replace a level appropriate ki power.

There's also Everyman Unchained Monk Archetypes, a 3pp that systematically converts all existing monk archetypes for the unchained monk.

if you use 3rd party there is a pdf called unchained monk archetypes that update ALL archetypes to work with the unchained monk. basically in your case jut give the nearest ki power for the ability and thats it.

why is Enlightened Warrior no longer PFS legal?

It's Aasimar exclusive, and Aasimar are no longer available. It's not available through the Adopted trait either.

You would need a race boon.

Why would you need a race boon? I thought adopted allowed you to get any legal trait, even if the race wasn't readily playable or illegal.

Grand Lodge

Hmm.
Most race books have the "Racial feats, racial traits, and racial spells are only available for characters of the assigned race" line.

Blood of Angels does not.

It may actually be available.
