That is what I would suggest also.
I have found a person's add or online posting is usually a pretty terrible description of how they actually play.
But if you play PFS on a semi regular basis, you can watch and see how they really-and-truly play the game. So if after a couple of times sitting at the table with someone, you decide you like their personality and play style; ask if they have an opening in their home group or would like to start a new home group with you.

When you find a potential group I would suggest asking the GM what his house rules are, and how his group plays. That way if you are not a match nobody's time is wasted. Even for PFS I would ask the GM how likely he is to fudge dice to save players.
If all of that fails playing online is not a bad option.
