I love super hero RPGs and after looking into PBP I think this is the best way to play super hero RPGs.

This game will be played fast and loose no tactical movement all played through descriptions and use of powers I think super hero games are good for this in a play by post.
I have never ran a play by post I’ve been reading and looking into it I think I can do it.

Before I put in the hours on top hours of prep and work I want to see what kind of interest there would be in a game.
This is not a recruiting thread but if you are interested in the game and want to know what my ideas and changes are and build a character then more power to you. I will happily help you work out a back story that has tie ins to the world but this is no guarantee that you will be selected into the final group but it won't hurt you that's for sure.

I am aiming to start recruiting in late April or early may my wife is due with our third child this month so I won’t have a standard schedule.
I’m hoping to use Obsidian Portal and maybe Google Docs to keep track of things like maps and different heroes and villains the team fights and meets

GENRE
It will be Modern Age with a little bit of Iron Age. (I read comics in the 90s)
It will be a mix Four-Color and Grim and Gritty most of the time somewhere in between both leaning towards Grim and gritty but you are still heroes first and foremost.
This game will be set in Freedom City with some changes of my own
The Heroes are in Freedom City, The Freedom League is the A+ Hero group in the area but they are also busy so there is plenty for the Heroes to do.

Rules
Power Level 9
Power Points 150
You can use either ultimate power or the core book for building your powers.
All characters will be ran through hero labs and I will have your characters on file at all times even if you don’t have Hero Labs I do
20 Points must be spent on Skills and Feats
Villain Points will be in effect.

There can be Extra Rules added and taken away as long as all the players are in agreement.

Very interested!

I've actually wanted to play Mutants and Masterminds for the longest time! If you don't mind a newbie coming along for the ride i'd be more than interested in joining!

I'm possibly interested. I'll have to see what I can come up with.

Good luck with spud #3.

Ghorrin Redblade

I hope to be help each player with there back ground fluff so they can have pre exsisting enemies contacts and ties to freedom city
A newb is no problem I'll be a newb pbp Gm and in just learning to be a pbp players

Liberty's Edge

While I think 3e is more balanced and streamlined, I wouldn't mind some old 2e action.
Followed your link from the Ronin Army Forum. BTW, if Anybody here is interested in more M&M, it's pretty much all we do over there. Not trying to poach players from this, just putting the word out.
I used to spend all my time on ENWorld playing D&D, but then when I started M&M over the course of about a year I slowly migrated to the point where aside from PFS all I play now is M&M over there.

Anyways, as I said, I'd be down for this.
One point, btw: I've no problem with you running things through Hero Labs, but it is known to make some weird decisions and errors, so if it says something different from what somebody has listed, you may want to double check personally.

EDIT: Also, if anybody needs help with character creation, I've literally made hundreds of characters as both GM and Player, so I'd be willing to help.

I never purchased any 3rd ed stuff because I had all my 2nd Ed stuff, and was happy with it.

I would be interested, but i'm a newbie to the game too...

You'll forgive me if i have to violently shake with excitement as I write up a rough treatment for my guy. I've wanted to play in a supers game for the longest time.

Liberty's Edge

I would be interested as well. Lurves me some supah-hiros.

Would love to get in on a M&M game when you get it going. Haven't gotten to play in years...

Does anyone have any problems or ideas for rules in the game? I know when I play it table top we use tactical movement but as a pbp I don't think its as useful or needed

I would love to hear ideas for characters I want them fully integrated into the freedomverse. ( I have made some changes I'll tell you as you need and on the final recruitment page

1 person marked this as a favorite.

From my limited understanding, I'm assuming M&M relies a bitt less on tactical combat and little more on rule of cool? I actaully managed to find the 2nd ed rules online and i'm reading through them so i come up with anything I'll let you know on that front.

Here's a bit of a preliminary profile for the guy i'd play in this game.

Profile:
Hero Name: Tremor (II)
Civilian Identity: Donald ‘Donny’ Khros (Currently Secret)
DoB: April 25th
Age: 19
Birthplace: Freedom City, America
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: Male
Power Origin: Mutant
Parents: Jacob Milstien (Father, Former construction worker, Former Tremor and founding member of a group of petty crooks: the Terra Trio presumed deceased)
Tiffany Khros (Mother, Nurse)
Public Image: Distrusted and or mocked due to father’s criminal activities under the Tremor Alias.

Powers: Able to generate Seismic Waves that can cause tremors in the earth or fire kinetic blasts. Can also detect vibrations in the ground and focus waves into burrowing into the ground for a quick escape.

Personality: Donny is the type of guy who feels he’s constantly got something to prove. A fun loving soul, he has an irrepressible sense of adventure, willing to throw himself into the situation without thinking with a smirk and snarky one liner. He defiantly wants to do good by people, and would never knowingly try cause a bystander harm. He can be a little stand offish and cagey at first, but when the situation calls for it, he has grouping up with other heroes … if anyone wanted to group up with a young, undisciplined hero using the moniker of one of a convicted criminal. As a result of his rebellious nature and his inherited reputation, he tends to be distrustful of the ‘proper’ authorities and the feeling is defiantly mutual.

Sczarni

I'm leaning towards a psionic character (telekinesis w/ minor telepathy powers) or a gadgeteer style like the chemistry girl from Big Hero 6...tossing various "grenades" around and using tech to pull off crazy stuff.

Widget I like Tremor that's a cool idea that can have some real fun role playing

Awww shucks! I just always like the idea of a hero who's dad was one of the disposable loveable loser type villains. Glad you like him so far! I'm still developing the skeleton of his back story at the moment so hopefully he can fit like a glove into the setting without much issue.

Speaking of which!

Very condensed back story!:
Life Events:

Pre adolescence: Conceived after a one night stand between hospital nurse Tiffany and ex-criminal (at this point)Tremor. The two are incredibly close friends for years, even before Jacob’s turn to petty crime. Once Tremor learns of Tiffany’s pregnancy he attempts for a few months to get back in the criminal game to set her and the kid up for life. His boss, Diamond Head, starts to go a little loony and makes a plan that might kill a whole slew of people. Never murdering anyone before Tremor makes a stand alongside -insert his nemesis’s name here- but is killed by Diamond head.

Born with no memory of his father other than hearing he was a ‘good man’, Donny has a relatively normal set of formative years, that is apart from his unexplainable constant migraines.

Has loving relationship with mother all throughout.

14 - 15: Having quite a turbulent time of middle school, he attempts to reinvent himself as a grungy skater type. Of Course this only leads to new kinds of ridicule. Picks up bass guitar at garage band thing advertised at school for a lark but finds he;s not only good, but astoundingly talented. (early onsets of his power emergence start here.)
16: Band (finally settling on a name: Powderkeg) finally gets a big break at school talent show. All is going well until a moment of distraction (maybe he sees a girl he likes in the crowd) causes a power spike in Donny, causing a low, but still earth shaking tremor. Donald in his heart knows it was him but authorities chalk it up as a freak earthquake and do not pursue an investigation. Tiffany comes clean about all aspects of Donny’s father.
18: College looms overhead, the band is still together and Donny over the last two years has been practising keeping his powers under wraps. He plans to either go to a local art college to study music or take a course in geology after having a sparked interest in the subject. currently works as hotel cleaner to earn a measly wage.
19: At somepoint (we can work on what occurence) an even happens that forces Donny to don his fathers own masked costume and save some peeps with his powers. Maybe earning himself a nemesis? We can work that out together me thinks.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'd like to play as Militia, a young well trained vigilante (more along the Punisher lines than Daredevil)

Hero Name: Militia
Civilian Identity: Clayton "Clay" Lawrence (Currently Secret)
DoB: October 25th
Age: 26
Birthplace: Las Vegas (or equivalent), America
Ethnicity: mixed
Gender: Male
Power Origin: trained vigilante
Parents: Robert "Falcon" Lawrence (Father, ex Marine, MIA)
Cristina Feliciana(Mother, Lawyer), Lucas Hartman (stepfather, lawyer)
Public Image: Unknown so far.
Powers: well trained in hand to hand combat. Use some weapons/gadgets (bolas, small crossbow, smoke grenades, shurikens..)

How compatible is the DC Adventures rule set to M&M2?

No idea

Liberty's Edge

DC Adventures is essentially a reskin /subset of M&M 3E. Comparing it to 2e can be problematic b/c there's a lot of stuff that's similar, but a lot of stuff that's different.

Kinda like D&D 3.0 > 3.5 > Pathfinder.

The biggest difference is that 2e used D&D stats (str/dex/con/int/wis/cha), wheras DCA and 3e use a new but similar stat setup of Str/Sta/Dex/Agi/Fgt/Int/Awe/Pre

Honestly, M&M 2e is about halfway between D&D/Pathfinder and DCA/M&M 3e.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I have a character I'd like to play as well.
Hero Name: Amalgam
Civilian Identity: Nathan Oliver Bode
Age: 33
Gender: Male
Power Origin: Accidental

Powers: Elasticity and Morph/Shapeshift and some related power stunts

Origin: After the last Grue invasion, a captured Grue Metamorph was being studied at a secret lab to try and find the source of and a way to counter their shapeshifting powers. Nate was the security guard on duty when the Grue attempted an escape. During the attempt, Nate was exposed to the collected alien samples and gained some Grue shapeshifting abilities in the accident that destroyed the lab and killed the Grue prisoner and the lead scientist working there. Now he uses his new powers to fight crime.

Super Secret Origin:
The accident that destroyed the lab actually created a chimeric human-grue hybrid of Nate, the grue, and the lead scientist Professor Oliver with an somewhat unstable physical form and a potentially unstable mental form as well.

So my wife had our lovely son and we are home recovering. So im now working on my plans for this game, I have tons of resources and ideas for a Super Hero RPG what I want to know is how much details do you guys as players want or need to have a successful game?

I can build a Obsidian Portal account with all kinds of NPC descriptions or not if you as players dont think it would be useful.

I want to know what you as players would want?

This game will be very sandbox

Congrats.

I think a few NPC's are needed, at least at the start. Enough to get a hook going on things.

Congratulations!

I'd also be interested in joining, M&M is one of my favorite games, and second edition especially. I've never played in a variation of freedom city but I'm sure a little reading will be enough to get familiar with it.

I'm toying with the idea of being a mighty warrior of myth and legend who's been rifted into FreedomCity by some manner of Space-Time Fracular Ion Sorcery! The disgruntled warrior is getting used to the modern world slowly, taking comfort in things like liquor stores, motorcycles and machine guns. His truest friend is his intelligent magical sword, a sword that grants him a gang of powers.

Hero Name: Chungus the Champion
DOB: Not applicable
Age: 217 (Magic)
Birthplace: The Wastes of Uld
Powers: Super Strength, Magic

Yes, Npcs would be helpful for sure.

NPC's can be easy to lose track of so i know would find it useful.

In terms of details, i think just enough to get a good grounded idea of situations in the world will suffice in my view.

Also congratulations sir! Hope it was as easy as possible for both of them. 8)

Far From it 4 days of labor with an emergency c section and a broken pelvic bone

But they are both doing good now

Interested! Played in Reckless's MM3e X-men game and that was a lot of fun. Wouldn't mind trying out 2nd edition.

Would love to play the wise-cracking teenaged scrapper. Looking to make an agile hand-to-hand Gravity manipulator. With a punch, he sends some bad guy helplessly floating away, can shift gravity in the room, dropping everyone to prone, that kind of stuff

Oooh, I haven't played an M&M game in a long time. I have a couple of ideas.

One is a water controller who avoids the normal problems by simply riding along in a a big wave of water. In fact, it's also helpful for transporting others.

The other is the concept of a child kidnapped in the fey realms and returned with odd abilities based on his adventures there.

I guess I'll be playing around and seeing what works. :)

Here's Tsunami

Tsunami recently arrived in the city, coming up from the bay. She rides is a rush of water - water that doesn't leave the area wet after she goes by. She avoids publicity, never addressing the media. Her first act as a hero was dealing with a gunman holding hostages on the pier. She surged up out of the sea, sweeping the hostages up in her water. The water served to protect them while she knocked out the gunman. She let the hostages down and slipped off into the water.

One thing she does on a regular basis is bring water across the city and then separate out all of the impurities into the hazardous waste dump. Silently showing just how much pollution gets put into the water.

Though it's hard to see her through the water, she has long black hair and tanned skin, probably latino or asian.

Congratulations to you and your wife.
And spotted this was a little happy, Love M&M and not had a game in a long time.

So very interested

Thinking of a being of light or energy, built around Speed, force Fields and incorporeal ability's.

May make him/her an Alien to slim things down, back story wise.
Thinking a kind of good being working on earth like thing.
I will have a play with HL and see what I can get.

So I was working on obsidian portal and created the first NPC file See what you guys think and what needs to be added what is unneeded what is hard to understand
before i do 20 to 30 of these I want them to be useful to you guys

Blaze

So please check it out and let me know

Looks good

GM what do you think of a pc that has perminant alternet form and hast a power to become human as an alt form?
Thinking of the ailen amugng us idea

It's looking good to me!

Re: Blaze info sheet.

I think we need a little clarification on power level and threat level. I've seen too many versions in too many universes. :)

It might also be good to know what crimes they have committed in the past to have an idea of what they'll be up to.

GM would it be Alright for my PC to have a drawback or Quark,
that of a morality against taking life.
She will be a Protector Alien who is a light life form, she using

1: Incorporeal Energy [Light form, permanent] + Illusion [personal clothing only]
2: Deflection [Protection all area], Force Field [protection self others, Telekinesis [Objects only] Dazzle [Visual only non-harmful]
3: Flight, Space flight, Teleport [all Self only].
4: Immunity [Life support, Suffocation, sleep, aging, hunger and thrust] + Regeneration [self only]
5: Telepathy [She has no vocal Voice. and only talks V Telepathy, limited to willing minds only]

She basically has subduing of protecting powers, none can be seen as KILLING powers.

She is protector of life not a taker of it, she has very strong feelings about protecting lifer no matter who's it is. She is crazy old but knows little of human culture having spent most of her life in deep space.

Name: STARLIGHT
Origin: Space Alien (I mean whats a super group with out 1 Alien.
Powers: Flight, Super Movement, Force-Fields alternate form (light)

Back story:

StarLight was born in a star 100,000s of years ago, she left and moved into space as her kind dos. Her culture seeks to protect and guild life where ever it maybe. In her travels very little happened and like most of her kind she would have kept wandering and knowing little if it was not for the fact she heard the Earth. Hundreds of thousands of voices all talking at once, radio waves heading out into space. She came close and for a time just looked down at the blue green world. It was like nothing she had seen before. a world of such contrasts. As she listened some thing in her changes, the crushing loneliness she had felt for millennial started to fade. It was then she made her mind up to fall into the gravity well and see what earth was like, see if she could help in the she felt best. Help Protect life. When she came across pain and suffering she felt a deep sadness, hunger war death all bad in her mind. She tuck human light form and decided she would learn more. This world is so rich with things to know and see and she always feels she must protect life.

I'm working on how to address the power level and threat levels it's something I've been working on.

As for a crimes rap sheet I'll try to put something on there

Here is my rough outline if you guys have anything to add let me know

Every known metahuman has a file and classifications
Every known super group also has files and classifications
Every metahuman has two classifications one on power level one on threat level
Threat level is done on a color code from purple being government aligned metahuman to red being a global threat
Power level is done in terms
Alpha metahuman is one of the most powerful beings on the planet, Centerion was and Alpha Level metahuman
Beta Metahuman is a very powerful metahuman
Gamma Metahuman is a powerful metahuman
Delta Metahuman are standard powered Metahuman
Sigma Metahuman are low powered metahumans or highly trained humans, The Raven is a Sigma Metahuman

Threat Level
Red Global Threat Supervillain
Orange National Threat Supervillain
Yellow “Supervillain”
Green a Vigilante
Blue “Superhero”
Purple Government Sanctioned Hero

I like those classifications. It definitely answers my questions.

I assume our PL9 heroes are mostly considered Deltas?

Yeah you would be considered Deltas or Sigmas depending on your character build

So I have a few villains up and starting to put some groups and organizations up

Hero Name: Star-Wake
DOB: Not applicable
Age: 100,000 +/-10,000 years
Birthplace: Inter-staler space
Powers: Energy form, Force fields, Movement, Healing
Power Descriptors: Alien/Cosmic
Power level
Delta Metahuman are standard powered Metahuman [PL9]

GM I will place up of G-docs Star-wakes sheet of that is ok.

Dropping out, just to much work.

S'all looking good on the portal so far! I like the power and threat level descriptor me doooo.

As a caveat, you know for a fact Tremor's probably 'auditioned' (read: Pestered) for a spot on the next gen before.

"Oh, hey you guys I was just in the neighbourhood and.... right, busy on patrol... that's why you totally blanked me there... stupid next gen. i'll MAKE MY OWN TEAM. WITH BLACK JACK AND" You get the idea.

Do you plan on going to Claremont?

Looking into it, probably not. Kinda had Tremor in mind to be about college age so it would have passed him by... still, in his life events write up i did have his powers fully emerge at 15-16ish.

Hmmm... so rethinking, would it be acceptable for him to be a very recent transfer to Claremont? I want to keep the whole him being an outsider thing and the fact he's going to a school of heroes when his father was a fairly minor villain kinda nicely compounds it i think.

here's my "submission":

Quantum:
Junot Juarez was abandoned at an early age and left to survive on his own. Caught stealing from a bodega, he was snatched up and thrown into juvi at ten. When no one claimed him, he got shuffled from foster home to foster home. Running with gangs, getting caught up in drug deals, running away from his foster homes when he could, he was troubled, to say the least. Puberty seemed to his him the hardest when he started to notice a strange change. Besides the typical physical and hormonal changes, he started experiencing unnatural forces tugging on his body, twisting him nearly apart when he least expected it. He'd find himself crashing against the ceiling in his sleep, or taking a step to cross the street and getting flung miles into the sky. He'd find himself taking the L train one moment, then in a blink of an eye, find himself falling towards the earth. It was hard to understand the change, hard to figure out the reasons why this was happening to him. It took him a year to figure it out and he was back to no good. Now he'd harness that ability to blink into a safe, he'd pocket more money than he could possibly carry and blink himself back home. Anyone who stood in his way quickly found themselves floundering for a grip on their surroundings as they floated in thin air.

The crime life just got way easy, he'd say to himself, until one fateful day, an overhead train skipped it's track and came careening down towards the busy street below. Without even thinking, Junot reached his hand out and suddenly the train stopped it's dangerous free fall. Wide eyed, everyone stared in amazement as the train gently came down to the ground, harming no one. A new leaf turned, Junot became amazed by his sudden act of bravery and within days found himself approached by the Claremont academy.

Identity: Junot "JJ" Juarez
Code Name: "Quantum"
Species: Mutant Human
Age:17
Occupation: Student at Claremont
Parents: Unknown (Orphaned)
Public Image: None
Powers: Gravity and Force manipulation, Teleportation, Hand-to-hand combat
