Psionics x Psychic Magic

Occult Adventures Playtest General Discussion

Ok, I have a big concept/fluff problem here, and I'd like you guys, as well as both Paizo designers and Dreamscarred designers, to help me solve it.
So, I've liked psionics since 3.5 and loved how Dreamscarred worked on them for the Pathfinder system. But you see, it's not exactly my main thing. I like them and have decided which places they fit in on my favourite and regularly used setting, Greyhawk. So if I want the Scarlet Brotherhood, illithids, priest of Zuoken and/or Xan Yae, among other themes, to be involved in a given adventure, I'll probably reach for psionics. What I'm trying to say it's that I'm far from a specialist, I'm just a guy who likes psionics and uses them once in a while.
That said, my problem is how to differentiate psionics and psychic magic in fluffy/concept. That's extremely important to me, because I want to use both of them in my home Greyhawk world, but I can't acknowledge them as the same thing or kind of power/thing, given that they have very distinct mechanics.
If I can't come to decide that, I'm afraid I'll have to drop one of the two systems, and I really don't want to do that, because I like them both.
See, when I think of psionics what springs to mind are illithids, Martian Manhunter, the Brain (DC villain), the two Gith races, and aliens (outsiders) in general. On the other hand when I think of psychic magic I visualize Penny Dreadful, spirits, cryptic visions, secrets, and mysteries, but aliens spring to mind once again when I think of Elder God cults and mad priests getting psychic powers from their otherworldly patrons. However, this is only a very vague and unsubstantial differentiation of how the two feel, but not a definition on how exactly different they are in source and concept.
One thing I could do is blurring the lines and making psychic magic a kind of arcane magic. But that still doesn't do for me, I don't know exactly from where to tackle this problem.
So I would like your inputs on how you guys view psionics and psychic magic on the same world being different things, for I would like to build as robust boundaries between them as possible.

I'll probably differentiate it that Psionics is for anything extra-terrestrial in origin. While Psychic is terrestrial paranormal phenomena.

So if an Illithid comes down in a Nautiloid Spaceship it will probably have levels in Psion.

However if a teenager is setting a town to flames with their mind, I'll probably use levels of Pyrokineticist (Occult).

You could even flavor the Psychic as a prototype version of the Psion, in much the same way a Shaman could be a prototype Cleric.

So while Ustalav is just now coming to grips with psychic powers with Psychics, Vudra has it down to a science with Psions.

The way we themed it when we playtested it (we are, for natural reasons, also heavily invested in Psionics), was that the Kineticist was refluffed into an Elementalist - he was the incarnation of the Elements. The rest of the classes were similarly drawn from a more "occult" than "psychic" springboard - spirit powers, ouija boards, making dreadful deals with strange forces.

And that is essentially the divider - Occult Adventures represent outside influence (elements, spirits, strange forces) while Psionics represent internal power (your own spirit, mind, soul)

Nothing to new to say here, but I would and do consider Psionics to be "future/sci-fi magic", while occult is more mysterious but also archaic

So Psionics would be something you would find amongst aliens and space travelers. In the case of Golarion, it would probably be really only common in Numeria and perhaps a few other places that have had some extraterrestrial influence, like the Sodden Lands. It would also be found on Verces and Eox, amongst other places

Occult would instead by the magic associated with mysticism and spiritualism. So it would be found associated with places like Ustalav or Jalmeray, as well as the Darklands.

I think it is much to go from the 5 magics I already know to now 6

Arcane prepared through study
Arcance spontaneous through blood
Divine through god given boons
Divine through nature
Alchemist extract concoctions
Now psychic occult powered

Maybe look at the movie dark city for inspiration on Psionics. It is very similar to the theme.of the.matrix.

Or consider it enhanced magic, useing the building bits of spells as Psionic power points to craft as you desire instead of being forced to employ premade parts. Making a pizza exactly as you want it: size, toppings, thin/think crust, ect, instead of buying a frozen pizza locked into more or less of the specifications you would design yourself.

Don't forget about wooshu martial traditions like.book of the nine swords, or Incarnum soulmelds.

It's actually very simple.

Psionics is Sci-Fi/Comic Book superpowers. X-Men/Asimov/Gamma World style.

Psychic Magic (for the most part) is occult/mystery/second-sight/ouija land.

I wanted do say I do _NOT_ think it is much to go from 5 magic types to 6. I have even more "magic types" since I allow 3.5 stuff like Incarnum soulmelds, Book of Nine Swords Martial Maneuvers, Binders, true namets, etc.
