Soul Gems

Advice

Sooo, I read a lot about soul gems and how everybody is using them for everything. Yet I can't find an item description for soul gem, nor can I find a price which it equals. Can anyone give me some input on these things?

-Not how to get them or anything, I am aware of what a soul gem is, just not its value and item description

Grand Lodge

Well, your first line is completely wrong, that's part of your problem. You've read some obscure posts or set of posts and conflating them to being a general description.

As to your last line, there is no such described item a soul gem in Paizo texts. There are the gems used in the Trap The Soul spell, but those are just containers, not magic items in themselves.

welp many people seem to use soul gems instead of onyx for animate dead, so I was looking them up to find if that is a thing that can be done

I don't know who those "many people" are, but the spell specifically requires 25 gp worth of onyx per HD of undead. So no, you can't just use a soul gem.

In reality, the important part is actually losing the gold for creating the undead creature. As a GM it honestly doesn't matter to me whether it's onyx, sapphire, soul gems, or cow shit. As long as you have 25 gp per hit dice worth of stuff you're trading in to create the undead that's what matters.

Of course, if you're using bovine fecal matter to pay the price you're going to need quite a lot of it. Because that shit is nearly worthless.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Check out the section here on The Soul Trade for your answers regarding prices. I believe this stuff is all from Book of the Damned Volume 3 (Horsemen of the Apocalypse). The gems themselves aren't described in detail, admittedly. I think "Small jewel-like objects" is probably the most descriptive line you'll find on them.

They are not, however, as widespread as you imply, except in Abbadon. Daemons and Souleaters are the ones who most frequently use them, whereas others dealing in souls (like mortal wizards not associated with daemons) are more likely to use other methods. You'll note that the section on the soul trade says that Soul Bind and Trap the Soul are the most common methods of capturing souls. Soul gems are more of a daemonic niche than something widespread.

which i find sad. . . I associate souls with necromancy a lot, not only demons. I would love to see some lich x soul action . . .

but thanks a lot gluttony.

Non-daemons can still participate in soul-usage, they're just not very likely to use soul gems to do it. They'd likely use some other method, such as soul bind (a necromancy spell) which is probably what your lich necromancer would be using.

i found this: http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/c/create-soul-gem

although this doesnt show up in d20ies cleric/ oracle spell list it would be a great alternative if allowed. Pretty much is free 75 gp for nothing

It's all in Book of the damned vol. 3, which came out in 2011 and is legit pathfinder. Basically to get into that you need a cacodaemon, that particular 3rd level cleric/wizard/witch spell, be a soul drinker, or have access to 8th level spells.

Worse still, while trap the soul is mentioned in passing, the way it's written up you get more money from the gem you stick a soul into than the actual soul itself. So really your only option that doesn't involve demonology is that one 3rd level spell.

But that's probably enough.

Also the passive aggression upthread is a bit offensive, dudes, just sayin'.

Are you referring to me?

Cause I was trying to be funny.

no offense was taken and the shit was slightly amusing, everybody may continue their lifes without hurling tables at each other, and now, I shall congratulate Glutton for winning the "WOW you answered my question completely and perfectly" award.

No further posts needed.

I was talking about LazarX mainly, and any further commentary has been deleted from this post in the interests of civility.

take 1 level (at least.can go full) as a summoner,or any other class with summon i monster . at level 6 and 7 take 2 levels of souldrinker\eater (pfs20 site uses alt names to not get sued over trade names).
and make sure you got crafting feats.

at end of day. summon monster 1 - pony (2hd craeture). if you can speak with animals is a bonus. suck it's life, see if your gm let you speak with it to compel it to stay motionless - enough for you to crit him and make this quick (lik a guy lowering his head in the gallows).
-you have been summonig him long before to walk over traps so don't go holy on me now. he won't feal a thing and probebly just get back home once he 'dies'.
do this neough to get 5 soul points (each count as standard so worth 100 gp)and your set for the normal amount you can craft today (base crafting is 1000 so every day you use 500). if you have enough in spellcraft to take the higher dc and double the amount of crafting each day. go for 10 points(if you can hold that much in soul points).

and you got your free crafting.and can use these for spell meterial as well.

also this prc gives you your own cocedaemon ( i named mine "slimmer" on acount of the tmies i had to go arm's deep into it's mouth to get the stones) so 1\day any slain ivctim can be harvested for a "real" soul stone. you might want to keep this useage for the higher level enemies you kill or start taking hostages. as the higher the hd the more the stone is worth. (you also count as deamon for consuming soulstones and gaining fast healing . so on lean days you can order your pet to get some plants cut down and store up the lesser stones he make.

as a side note. if you have 10 min before a known battale. call pony. suck his 2 points. use them to recharge the spell and call a new pony. do this again and again. for each 2 points you suck you get 10 temp hp. that stay for 1 hour and stack (says so in the ability power) so after 5-10 min of this you should be hoarding over houndreds of temp hp.

(the soul points need to come from an intelegat creature or an animal with hd = your souldrinker\eater class level. so 2 levels of prc is ok wih pony. but if you go any higher ull need to start summoning intelegnt things. at level 15~ caster you could get a dire tiger which has HD X 2 of the spell that summoned it so can also be used for the temp hp grind trick)

The "soul trade" concept is cool -- evil, but cool. Unfortunately, they don't give you enough or interesting uses for the gems. (Charge a staff? really?) I like the concept, but that section really needs to be rewritten and expanded.
