Mantis. It gets lunge as a full attack action but I'm looking for a way for it to attack when I charge with a lance and to threaten at 10'. I plan to keep him medium. I know I can cast a spell on a companion if it comes from a class that grants a companion. Long arm is on the bloodrager spell list. Can I take a one level dip into the bloodrider archetype, that grants a companion, to cast it from a scroll on the companion, or must the spell actually be cast from the classes daily allotment.

bellyrubs the mantis to make all the legs twitch
Awww.. whats his name?
The manits is the V word...*covers the poor things ears* Vermin, so unfortunately the dire collar won't work on him. Even if you have a special bond that allows you to treat the vermin as an the magical items you buy don't.
I looked for some bracers, but those are use activated and our multi legged friends have problems using those.
You may want to invest in ride by attack and just keep running strait at the meanie you're attacking. You lance him, move forward the mantis attacks. Then he can't 5 foot step away from you or withdraw because you'll lance him, and he's still threatened by the mantis and your shield if you have one if he stays where he is. Then on your turn you 5 foot back and both full attack him.
And they thought dancing lessons for ponies were silly.

I could be wrong, but why doesn't this one work?
Linky Dire Collar.
Also flutter, you really need to design some pathfinder pet owner membership cards^^

As Flutter said, the Dire Collar works great, on -animals-. The mantis isn't an animal type, and so it won't work.

IIRC, the spells need to come from a class that gets an animal companion, and spells from magic items do not work.
The druid may cast a spell with a target of “You” on her animal companion (as a touch range spell) instead of on herself. A druid may cast spells on her animal companion even if the spells normally do not affect creatures of the companion's type (animal). Spells cast in this way must come from a class that grants an animal companion. This ability does not allow the animal to share abilities that are not spells, even if they function like spells.
