Up Close and Deadly... range?

Rules Questions

Up Close and Deadly (Ex): At 1st level, when the pistolero hits a target with a one-handed firearm that is not making a scatter shot, she can spend 1 grit point to deal 1d6 points of extra damage on a hit. If she misses with the attack, she grazes the target, dealing half the extra damage anyway. This is precision damage and is not multiplied if the attack is a critical hit. This precision damage increases to 2d6 at 5th level, to 3d6 at 10th level, to 4d6 at 15th level, and to 5d6 at 20th level. This precision damage stacks with sneak attack and other forms of precision damage. This deed replaces the deadeye deed.

So basically, if my gunslinger has Signature Deed (Up Close and Deadly), I can literally spam this deed as long as I have at least 1 grit point in reserve.

For something called "Up Close and Deadly"... where's the "Up Close" part? Isn't there suppose to have a maximum range to that, like "any ranged attack under 20 feet" or something?

Scarab Sages

Precision damage is usually limited to 30 feet or less. I would go with that.

Grand Lodge

The range limit is your one handed firearm's limit, which are relatively short range weapons.

Yeah, plus really if you are playing a gunslinger you are going to want to be 'up close' so you can hit touch AC... so it letting you actually still manage to graze them when you are not... meh not so bad IMO.

Though now even as a player of a pistolero that totally did do this... I wouldn't object if my GM houseruled that I could not take Signature Deed with Up Close and Deadly... I don't think it's horribly OP, but then I love guns so I am biased... but again, if a GM told me "omg no you can't have that deed as a Signature Deed" I would be okay with that.

Yeah a feat for +1d6 damage is good but not broken.

It's actually a feat for +3d6 damage minimum, and it guarantees at least some damage in the event that you miss.

It's still not remotely broken, but it's quite a bit stronger than just a feat for +1d6 damage.

Grand Lodge

Well, there is also the 'half damage on a miss' part as well. Not that gunslingers miss often.

Can you use up close and personal with signature deed?

You could use Up Close and Deadly with Signature Deed, there is no rule saying you can't that I've seen. Many deeds that prevent it explicitly say so.

Bear in mind that signature deed only works once per round, so you could freely add the extra damage (up to 5d6) for free once each round. It's basically a free extra 18 points of damage per round, on average. But since Signature Deed is limited to only once per round, it's hardly a problem.

Except this one does say that:

The cost of using this deed cannot be reduced with the Signature Deed feat, the true grit class feature, or any similar effect.

Ah! The whole ability wasn't quoted. Or maybe it was changed since it's release and when this thread was written.

Pretty sure it was changed, yeah. There was another thread which had an older version.
