So I'm thinking of getting into pathfinder society play and I have a question about what I'm allowed to do. If I don't own the book then I can't use anything from that book, is this correct? Like I can't use alternate racial traits without the ARG, and I can't use equipment from the APG if I don't own that book. Am I right on both of these?

Basically yes. Although, I think that the intent is more about self sufficiency then making people buy stuff. I am not sure if this is cheating, but in theory you could get away with not owning something if you do not need to look it up. Also, keep in mind that it does count if you own the digital version.

Yes, that is correct on both.

Grand Lodge

Yes to both questions.

Having to own the book does two things, both of which are nice.

1. It supports the company that developed the game, and manages the infrastructure for PFS.

2. It allows you to easily show the specific rule element you are using to the GM, who may not own the specific book you use.

The only books you don't need to own a copy of to use, technically, are the CRB and the Bestiary 1. The people running the games also usually don't need to look up well-known stuff, like ultimate combat or magic or the APG, but you're required to at least own them. ($10 PDFs are excellent for this purpose.)

remember "owning the book" also has two options:

1) Own and bring a copy of the book. $40ish from your Friendly Local Game Store.

2) Bring a PDF reader of some sort (tablet, laptop) with a legal watermarked copy of the PDF. $9.99 from this very website!

2a) print just the pages you need from a legal watermarked copy of the PDF. $9.99 + $0.15 a page from your Friendly Local Printer (I am partial to Minuteman and UPS Store franchisees)

And, of course (since nobody's linked it yet), please peruse through the latest copy of the Guide to Organized Play as soon as you get the chance.

It will have answers to the majority of your questions, such as this one.

As well as the Guide to Organised Play, another essential document to read is Additional Resources

This explains what is legal in PFS from each book and may also help you decide whether getting the book (in whatever format) is worth it or not.

Enjoy the game :-)

That is correct, but the organizers are also aware that people have different financial challenges. If there's any issue like that, talk to the venture officers and see what your options are. For example, if a player is on a fixed income or long-term disability, the VOs might tell them to stick to the "core assumptions" books, and the GMs won't give them any difficulty for not having the book.

That's slightly incorrect.

The Core Assumption means there are three things everybody is assumed to own.

• Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook
• Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play"

You have to own these two* resources. That's the Core Assumption. Everything else is optional.

The Pathfinder society field guide is not part of the core assumption. (Guide to Organized Play, page 5)

CRB and Guide to Organized Play. That's it.

Yeah, you're right. Thank you!
