Most Fun Build / Character

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

What's the funnest build/character you've ever played and why?

I have to admit I'm having a ton of fun with my ninja/street performer(bard). 16 Charisma at level 4, the fast talker trait and he adds half his bard levels to bluff and sleight of hand. Admittedly weak in combat but there is something insanely fun about a character who can talk his way out of most situations either through diplomacy or bluffing (he probably does bluff more than he should).

So far the highlight of his career has been the following. Our party ends up stumbling upon a devil trapped in a magic circle who says he will help us if we free him from the circle so he can return to his plane. My character starts off with a bluff saying we would be more than happy to help should the devil answer a few questions for us first. The devil responds by saying he trusts me but isn't so sure about about my paladin friend. Of course the ninja/bard replies there's no need to worry about her, the paladin is completely under my control. The dice gods were on my side as I rolled a natural 20 on the bluff giving a final score in excess of 30 on the check. Of course it helped that we had a GM with a great sense of humour for these kind of things. He took the excellent roll on the die to mean that not only did the devil believe me but he believed me so much that he was under the impression that the paladin had effectively given her word not to harm him by proxy. It was just hilarious when we had what we wanted and the paladin started hacking away to have the devil gloating throughout the fight that he may end up dying but at least he got the paladin to fall first.

Read the guide about the Hexcrafter Magus and decided to play one for a pirate game. Tanked my Cha, but took traits to use Int for Diplomacy and Intimidate.

The Hexcrafter abilities are great, and I really like playing up the curse aspect of it as a Pirate Captain scaring his crew, but my favorite part about it has been roleplaying the low Cha but high social skill bonuses. So he talks a lot with convoluted speech patterns and knows how to manipulate the flow of a conversation to get people to agree with him even when they don't mean to, but anyone that spends more than five minutes with him absolutely despises him.

It has created a fun dynamic where his reputation is a fearsome murderous pirate lord, but the rest of the party knows that he's a bag of hot air and ignore him when he talks or openly belittle him when he's trying to play on his reputation for petty things. They let him be the leader because he's still extremely competent at managing their image and political maneuvering, but since he can't intimidate or trick them and values their help too much to kill them he has to put up with their constant disrespect and ridicule.

After awhile he actually grew really fond of them and when his number two (another PC who plays along with my antics) got her own ship he wouldn't go sailing again until he found a new first mate to make fun of his plans and question his intelligence.

Oversized Goblin (Monster Codex option, +2 to STR/DEX, -2 to CHA) Savage Technologist. I just loved the whole double-barreled pistol + cutlass fighting the style with rage powers to boot. Plus I was a Goblin!

Define "fun".

That really does seem like a matter of personal preference. I know a player who seems to get a blast out of picking a class and trying to find the best optimized build for it. I'm sure he's greatly entertained when his characters fluidly respond to any sort combat and cleans up.

Me, I tend to like my character fluff a little more. Being able to express character idiosyncrasies without interfering with the mission at hand and finding odd ways to respond to fairly standard scenario situations.

Really from all the way over here it's hard for me to sit and tell people I've never met what should entertain them.

I fluff first, pick class/traits/skills/feats according to that fluff. My PC's are NEVER optimized. Min/max players & murderhobos hate me.

Most times I envision a background and work a character up from there. Often I do not know what class I will be choosing until the background is almost half-figured out. Other times I pick a class and craft a background around, "how did he/she get to this point?"

But then again, I am old and our group enjoys immersive ROLEplay where optimization and min/maxing is not really required to survive or have a good time.

never use the "B" word....

I create a character I can RP and enjoy in the framework of the world its intended for.
Try to blend with the team..and play to my strengths.
Right now my Fighter/Cavalier in a kingdom building campaign is very fun, he is a variant Catfolk race and a big Siberian tiger..who is terribly proper and unfussed about most everything.
Hell I go entire sessions without even rolling a dice..lol

I realized I ignored the OP question...

Halee Ovroon; Rogue & failed mage apprentice who murdered her mentor; a fugitive on the run. Abused by mentor and locals due to being tall and ugly. Intimidation and Trip build. I played her as a thug, but did not build her as the archtype.

Went to 5th lev and after an incident where a (stranger) priestess of Serenrae sacrificed her life to save a wounded Halee from minotaurs, she questioned her life and the gods. Roleplayed her conversion to becoming a Cleric of Serenrae. She was horribly non-optimized, but it was perfectly fluffy and in a story-based campaign I had a lot of fun with her.

Ashtathalon - On Roll20, we had TWO 5-hr sessions (not back to back) without ever rolling a die... it's all about the story and how things are approached.

I had the most fun with my "not-Rogue". A half-elf drow paragon with levels in Malefactor, Swordsage, and Factotem. I was able to pull off that whole "bluff the stupid guard into helping you" thing, while also turning to Intimidate to get him all hot and bothered, giving me bonuses to my Bluff and Diplomacy during the whole situation. All on a 13 Cha base.

It may be cliche, but my conjurer (teleportation subschool) is just a blast to play. So much versatility, well-defended, cranky and practical, but with an elaborate back story that really gives him good color. But honestly, the ability to have a solution for any situation that another party member can't solve-at least with a little creativity and planning is really fun. You need to enjoy strategy and resource management to some degree; and also willing to temper your usefulness so everyone contributes, but I can think of a more fun build to play.

Reach cleric is also a lot of fun.

Liberty's Edge

For me, my favorite was my 22 Wisdom, 7 INT/CHA Zen Archer whose only social skill is intimidate. He is incredibly confident in himself, and routinely throws himself into precarious situations with nary a thought. He also has the ability to back up his bluster via immense Single Target Damage and mobility/skillfullness.
