The idea isn't fully formed. The only class I can think of that would allow Hobbes to talk would be summoner, but then again no one but Calvin can hear him anyway. Any particulary good ideas on how to make an interesting build? Also, if anyone knows of size appropriate size toys for minis, that wpuld be cool.

You would think that Hobbes would be summoned; however, it would be more appropriate that Hobbes would be an illusion or figment, since he does not actually exist in the real world.
A Gnome Illusionist would be a decent idea, since Calvin is a kid and has a fantastical sense of imagination. Have that and the Effortless Trickery feat from the Gnomes of GolarionCompanion Booklet.
Threatening Illusion could also help create a concept that there is a creture there, but if they don't believe in what Calvin is saying, then they can ignore what is there.

I like it. Too bad bonded object have to be slotted, or I'd have a little tiger doll as my familiar. Maybe I'll do a bonded wand or something.

If you're a stickler for the "Hobbes must be invisible", you're kind of in trouble, because there's no way for the character to have an effect on the game unless other people can observe his effects.
If you're more interested in the "spirit" of Calvin and Hobbes, I would say the Wild Child archetype for Brawler. Kid with slingshot + big tiger. Can't go wrong.

The Spiritualist sounds reasonable for this idea as well. They summon a spirit from within themselves, as the Eidolon for summoners. It can come out incoporeal or made of ectoplasm. Unfortunately the playtest is not available to make new characters. There should be another round of playtest character creation sometime soon though.

Wizard, familiar striped cat. Low levels options = minor image! major image, disguise self (as it is you familiar). Higher levels= polymorph, aspects! enlarge! Ect.
Hobbs is intelligent but at times comes off as the animal he is. This is a pretty friendly and role play fun way to get him into every scenario.

Unseen servant. Lasts hours, and RP as though it is real.

You could make the bonded object a sap. A stuffed animal as a sap would work.

My tribute to Calvin and Hobbs, and far from anything approaching the characters, really, is a Blade Bound Magus as Calvin, and Hobbs as his weapon.
Calvin talks with Hobbs, no one else can hear them, but Calvin is having a real conversation, so his part of the conversation, frequently spoken out loud, almost, almost, makes sense to the people around him.

Anhob was my dwarven stonelord. He had a statue of a cat that he always carried with him and when he needed it to do something he would put it down and ask.Semi-related anecdote:

The GM let me reskin wands of summon monster 1 as a 'statue'.
The PFS version (another player) is going summoner with a wand with a handle to focus on spaceman spif.
I like the haunted oracle idea above. Mirror image on the spell list lets scientific progress goes boink.

Mechanically, I like the idea of an arcane caster with the feats Cao Phen mentioned above. Wizard would work, though I would be inclined to go Exploiter rather than Illusionist, as Potent Magic would help compensate for the Gnome's lack of a racial Int bonus. Another possibility is a Sorcerer with the Impossible bloodline from Champions of Balance. The description fits perfectly ("If this expanded perception doesn't drive you mad, you may learn to make the impossible into reality"), and in PFS it grants Spell Focus as its 3rd level bloodline power, allowing you to still get both Effortless Trickery and Threatening Illusion by level 3. Another thematically appropriate spell is Vision of Hell--perfect for some of Spaceman Spiff's more harrowing environs.
