Play Mats and Card Guild

I sort of hate to ask this, but...

Is the special rule of the play mats "official" for organized play?

I didn't notice anything about it in the Org Play Guide, and I'm sure it will come up to a co-ordinator some time.

Grand Lodge

Actually, at this point, nothing is official about the use of the Ultra-pro playmats or a Paizo shirt (re-roll). So at this point you can't allow that for organized play.

Actually Theryon, I'm not entirely sure the discard for a draw wouldn't be allowed. That one seems more to me like a "The rule is there, it works unless specified otherwise". I don't know anyone that actually owns one so it hasn't come up, but I don't think it quite falls under the same category as things like a shirt reroll.

Grand Lodge

Just stating that as far as we know, the discard rule for the mats has not been approved for organized play. It is fine for regular play. Until we have something in a FAQ or guidebook or ruled okay, we really can't use it.

Sovereign Court

That's what I'm saying though, does it really need an official OK? To me, Organized Play basically says "follow the rules of PACG, additions and exceptions are in the guide". Adding something that isn't already OK in PACG (like a shirt reroll) would need a specific OK to be allowed, because it isn't already acceptable to use in PACG. However, something that already is allowed in PACG (the mat discard / draw) would need to be specified that it is NOT OK to use, because it is already allowed in the game.

Isn't there an issue with the fact that 75% of the characters in OP don't have playmats (yet)? Seems unfair, unless you modify the rule that any playmat gives any character the discard/draw ability.

The mat, though it has specific characters on them, doesn't need to be an exact match to use them. Just actually having the mat allows the discard.

I'm with Andrew here; I don't see a reason to disallow the mat discard and draw in Organized Play, unlike the shirt reroll it's not a construct of Pathfinder Society.

As for which mat to use; I initially assumed you needed the mat for the matching character, though reading it again the wording is poor. I'd expect the intent is matching character, but unless that's clarified I guess any mat would do. (If it is clarified to require a match, I'd suggest just requiring the class to match, so that anyone with the S&S base mat set is set for OP unless they unlocked Jirelle).

To be clear, I actually agree with Theryon here. I think it needs to be clarified in the OP Guide, just the same as ancillary products are in the PFS Guide. Not that I feel it shouldn't be allowed. I just wanted to make sure I hadn't missed it, and to bring it to Tanis & Vic's attention.

And I'm 90% sure that the rule will be that any mat works.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I'll make sure the next version of the guide has something about this. For now, tell 'em I said the shirt allows a reroll of one die and you need a mat of the same class as your character. So Wu Shen uses Merisiel's mat.

Tanis, is the eligible tshirt list the same as the PFS tshirt list?
Also, would bringing the PFRPG Character Folio count as equivalent to the TShirt for rerolls?

(I know this is nitpicky, but I should ask.)

Yes and no respectively.

Thanks for the clarifications, Tanis.
You are a just and merciful red-handed pirate queen.

Ah, forgot one thing - Jirelle is playable via boon, but she's a Swashbuckler with the Rogue deck. I assume this means she needs the S&S Jirelle mat to get the benefit, since the match is with the class of the character rather than of the deck.

Sovereign Court

I'd agree with that. If you have Jirelle, you have S&S, so it's not like you'd be buying a mat without the game it typically goes with.

You assume correctly.

Okay, sorry to hard-necro this thread. But can we confirm:

T-shirt allows reroll of one die;
Playmat allows same power of "discard a card, draw a card" as long as you have the proper class deck (specific character in case of unlocked characters)

Correct

FYI, I broadened the latter to be any official play mat, regardless of class.

Sovereign Court

Makes sense, it'd be like only allowing shirt rerolls in the RPG if the shirt was for your current character's faction (as funny as it'd be to see hordes of role players charging through the hall at GenCon trying to change their shirt on the way to the next session with a different character lol)

Thank you both Andrew and Tanis. Was pretty sure that was the case, but I didn't have time to source it today.

Great to know about the Play mats, since my favorite is Alchemist Damiel! I haven't gotten the Skull & Shackles Character Add-On Deck, where he first makes appearance, but wondered if I could use Sorceress Seoni's mat since she is my second favorite and am more inclined to using that one.

There's no rule that says the mat has to match your character (or the Adventure Path you're in), so enjoy!

It's in the PACG Guild Play guide p.10 ("Accessory Perks") if you want confirmation.
