X-Wing and TIE Fighter are being re-released later today on GoG with updated modern-PC friendly editions and include both the original versions and the 1998 special editions and all their expansions. Which is nice.
We're also getting updated versions of Sam and Max Hit the Road, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis and Knights of the Old Republic today. Apparently this is the start, with GoG bringing a total of 30 LucasArts games to their service in the next few months. Discounting the console-only titles and newer games that still work fine, that has to be almost all of them.
And to cap it all off, Sega are also apparently going to be releasing a PC version of Valkyria Chronicles.

First to sound clueless, GoG?
Second, I am still shocked that there hasn't been a release of a modern, updated, hi-definition version of X-Wing for the newer console platforms given how well they support team/squad play online. It would be especially nice to see a lot of ships from the Clone Wars era and EU as well, or at least the piece of the EU that's still valid with Episode VII coming up.

X-WING ALLIANCE isn't in the first wave, but I'm assuming it's somewhere further down the line in the rest of the 30 games.
Just realised that my old Sidewinder stick doesn't really work any more, so if I want to play these I'm going to have to move up my new joystick purchase for ELITE: DANGEROUS.
As I recall, XWA was either the same engine as the special editions or XW vs. TF. In any case it looks like they've done the difficult work already in porting over the originals.
I'm in the same boat -- my old Sidewinder ran through the MIDI/Game port on my old computer. I'll have to upgrade to one of those newfangled USB thingies. That means I'll probably dust off "Episode 1: Racer," as well, since my daughter missed out on that one.

Short for Good Old Games Basically - like Steam, but dedicated to releasing older, often DOS-based, games for use on modern PCs with the newer versions of Windows, etc.
They started out doing all those games with expired or cheap licensing deals - since most companies were either not selling them anymore or just out of date with updates. It's kind of snowballed to the point where they are releasing some newer games (often at the same time as Steam) or indie games.
It's a nice alternative to Steam, in that most of their releases are DRM free and you don't have to keep their software portal tied to your PC.

Actually, they've dropped the Good Old Games moniker, it's just GOG.com now. Happened about the same time they started offering brand new games.
It's untrue that most of their releases are DRM-free.
ALL of their releases are DRM-free.
And they don't even have a software portal yet, though one is in development.

The Defender is so OP. I remember it almost felt like having cheat codes on when flying that thing.
My favorite was the Interceptor. You had the higher speed and maneuverability, while keeping that high fragility of the TIE Fighter.
I do have a soft spot for the original TIE Fighter though. Before the mission even starts you're so close to death it gets your adrenaline going.

Agree on all counts. I think it was X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter that would let you hold multiplayer dogfighting matches in the TIE fighter. You really learn how to maneuver since one hit takes you out. Both of the pseudo-canon advanced ships (TIE Defender and Missile Boat) were grossly overpowered.
I'm looking forward to hearing "You are the Emperor's Eyes" and such again.

I own x wing vs tie fighter- should I get this version for my netbook since it's better than my windows box?
If you don't own the original X-WING or TIE FIGHTER, sure :)
Also there was a whole story line in x wing vs tie fighter that I don't think is in these games.
XWvTF is multiplayer only. You might be thinking of its expansion, BALANCE OF POWER, which added a single-player storyline about the squadron trying to take down a rogue Super Star Destroyer (and was inspired by the X-WING books by Michael Stackpole). That's not in this initial wave of releases, but should show up in the rest of the games GoG has the rights to (alongside the underrated X-WING ALLIANCE).
Still waiting for my new joystic as well before diving back into these :)

I picked these up for the pure nostalgia value to be pleasantly surprised at how well the game play has help up over the years. (The actual flight sim anyway) The cutscenes and interactions are dated as to be expected but it's fun none the less. Though I am greatly reminded of the days long past where I almost ripped my joystick apart trying to keep up with the accursed A-Wings....

AH..so I really don't need this game, then. Huh.
Not sure why Alliance gets so much hate.
Yeah, if you already have a working copy of the games, no reason to buy these.
When I was a kid, I didn't get X-Wing. A friend had it and I played it some, thought it was good. I ended up getting TIE Fighter, and that's the game I spent probably 800+ hours playing the next few years. So it's where my love goes.
I've never actually played X-Wing all the way through, just a few missions. Once I got used to TIE Fighter though, the controls were just barely different enough that it really got to me and I couldn't sit through X-Wing.
If I were making the choice of what to fly in an RPG, or similar situation, it would totally be an X-Wing (or A-Wing, depending on the character). We ran a spec ops squad campaign, X-Wings were prefect: versatile, had a hyperdrive, small. It was a fun game.

I'd pick a y wing, if it actually flew like it had the stats it is supposed to have. If not, then a b wing (which I find flies like the y wing was supposed to).

That's what I did.
And I've spend a lot more time in my trusty TIE Interceptor than my Sidewinder, this weekend. :)

Got a Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS for ELITE: DANGEROUS and was pleasantly surprised to discover it works with X-WING straight out of the box, no problem and auto keymaps a mostly sensible set of controls onto the stick.
Even the throttle works, although I find in the X-WING games that I switch between the three speed sets (1/3, 2/3 and full speed) more than using fine throttle control, so it makes more sense to put those on the three buttons on the side of the throttle and use those instead.
I did forget how 'problematic' X-WING is compared to the other games. The AI is noticeably dumber and the game is ridiculously tough compared to any of the others. The number of missions which require being in just the right spot at the right time is ridiculous. And it's not fun to round off a tricky 30-minute escort mission to see one of the shuttles you're escorting cheerfully turn round and ram it's companion, resulting in mission failure.
It's annoying as I've never finished X-WING, but I suspect I'll be moving onto TIE FIGHTER before long. Whilst still tough, it's not quite as idiotic and the AI is a lot better.
Hey, I love X-Wing and TIE Fighter as much as the next nerd, but GOOD GOD MAN, you forgot to list THE SECRET OF MONKEY ISLAND as one of the available games. For shame!
Terrific game, but this is the same version as the Steam remastered edition which came out about three years ago, so it's already been out there a while (and discounted to almost nothing a few times). You can still get both the remastered editions of MONKEY ISLAND 1 and 2 on Steam, this is just their first time on GoG.

I feel like such a dork, using it, but it does make flight surprisingly pleasant (especially E:D, kb+m is kind of a nightmare in comparison).

X-WING and TIE FIGHTER were released for Mac OS7. Apparently getting them working on the latest Mac OS is "problematic", by which they mean, "completely impossible and legally dubious". Apparently it's much easier to run the GoG versions in Windows on a Mac via WINE than it would ever be to get the actual Mac versions running properly.

Update: X-WING ALLIANCE, X-WING VS. TIE FIGHTER (including the essential BALANCE OF POWER expansion) and KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC II were released earlier this week. EMPIRE AT WAR (including FORCES OF CORRUPTION), ROGUE SQUADRON and SUPREMACY (aka REBELLION) were all released today.
JEDI KNIGHT: DARK FORCES II (probably including MYSTERIES OF THE SITH), STARFIGHTER and REPUBLIC COMMANDO will all be released on 27 January.
So very, very good games in there.

My only gripe is that I preferred the music version of the DOS based Tie Fighter; they made a CD Collector's version of that game that still used the same music software in the DOS. The version on GoG is from the X-Wing Collection set made for Win 95/98 that uses an inferior player. Missed the old sound quality.
Still fun as heck blow up a Mon Calamari cruiser though.
