I was thinking this should be in the Products section, but there doesn't seem to be a way to post a general question, only a thread related specifically to a given product, so ...
I am in need of (read: want ) new dice. I still have the dice I used from when I was about 15 or 16 years old, which was ... a long time ago;)
Anyway, there are a lot of dice makers out there right now and a LOT of different cool kinds of dice. The various products by Crystal Caste I see in Dragon look really cool, for instance. Anyone using any of their dice? If so, any thoughts?
So, my question is, what kind of experience have those of you who more or less recently purchased dice had? Quality of dice, cost etc? Do you recommend one company or product over another?
Thanks everyone!
Marc

I have recently become a big fan of Chessex's dice. They come in a wide variety of styles, the prices are reasonable (not cheap, not expensive), and they are some of the highest quality dice I've seen for their price range. Granted, if you really want quality and style, your best bet is to snag some Dwarven Stone dice but those are a bit too costly for me at this time. Maybe someday...

I'm a big fan of simple, clean solid-colored opaque dice.
They're easy to read and nice and cheap.

Might I suggest the Polish-made awesomeness of Q-Workshop dice, available here?
You're welcome :-)

I was just about the suggest the same thing. They are pricey but they look so cool. I don't have any, but I always look at them saying, "One day, one day..."
But otherwise, Chessex dice (like others have said) are the way to go. They're pretty affordable for a set of seven, and they are all beautiful looking.

I've looked at the Q-Workshop dice before, and they look pretty, but I find them really hard to read (at least in the pictures). Perhaps they'd be easier in the cruddy light of a convention gaming table ... nah. 8-)
I buy quite a bit of Chessex product*, and I recommend them as well. I do recommend that you catch them at a show sometime, though, since their line is extensive enough that I've not seen it all at one time in any retail store. And (imposing a bit on our hosts' patience here, perhaps) I don't think .jpg images really do justice to good dice. (Also true of Crystal Caste, btw.)
* Why "quite a bit"? Because I need them. No, really.

These dice are by far my most favorite purchase from Paizo.
But, I am in manufacturing, and work with metal pieces all day long. So they feel much more comfortable to me. (Side Note: They sound devastating if you accidentally drop them on a tile floor. I though I had shattered my friends tile...)
But they are on the expensive side.
For less than that one set, you could get these. And I hope that will tide you over for a while.
But to more accurately answer your question: Chessex is a good brand. Can never go wrong with a set of Chessex.

Those things would ding the hell out of my living room table and I'm pretty sure my wife would defenestrate me if I made a habit of using them. Still, very cool for people who don't play on wooden furniture!

Yes, folks. That's right. Defenestrate. It is the greatest word in the dictionary. If you don't know it, look it up.
Are those metal dice really all that heavy and damaging?

Yes they are very heavy compared to normal dice and can do damage to a soft wooden table. On the other hand they are great dice and you really feel confident when you use them for some reason. Maybe it's just me. I have the huge steel d20 and man is that thing deadly. It makes the whole table shake when you roll it and I swear you could kill someone with it.

Not only that, but you can use the d4s as road spikes and pop someone's tires. When they get out of the car, staring at their flat tire in bewilderment, you can scream "SNEAK ATTACK, M@&%~#&%~@*+!!!!!!"

Yeah... I have one of these at my desk. Despite the fact that it says that it's "Giant", it's really only about an inch and a quarter in diameter. But this sucker would drive down property values if you tried using it on a wood or glass table.
Oh yes.. there would be dings galore.
On the other hand, there is really no more satisfying die upon which to prove a critical. And this is why God invented these things, or even a good box-top.
Thanks,

I love how you are able to answer one question and show off three other products at the same time. ;)

Okay, that seriously made me laugh out loud.

I've got the same dice, but small. I guess they're the 12mm? I got them as a present. They're a nice weight and the numbers are very clear. I use these when playing and DMing, coupled with a "giant" purple and speckled d20. It's not metal, which is why I use it, because I want a big d20 seeing as it's what I roll the most, but I don't wanna ding the table or monster manual I roll on.

...I really need to get some more d4s...

I need to get one of those trays. I swear that 50% of one player's rolls fall onto the floor or propped against a book - thus degrading into the debate over whether the result is legit.
