Lost Days

Is the loss of multiple days' worth of changes to our characters still commonplace? It really discourages me from logging on, when I suspect that everything I do will be erased the next time I log in.

Certainly it's better for this to happen to impermanent Alpha characters than during EE, but it's still a downer.

Even more frustrating when (as is usual as the server is unattended for long periods on weekends) it occurs at the end of a weekend of hard work.

On the plus side I have posted in another thread pointing out apaprently lost recipes can reappear if you retrain the level necessary to use them (thanks to keeper Kaziil for her observations on that).

Of course if you just banked all your good stuff before the crash you get double copies :D

My lost recipes did not reappear, unfortunately.

Yea, there was an unintended roll back for like half the server after the server crash.

But Ryan says there was no rollback.

There was not a rollback. We are digging into what actually happened but it was not planned.

I wonder what the difference in definition is. Something with the player-observable characteristics of a rollback, but which isn't, is a...?

I'm pretty sure Ryan was saying there wasn't a planned Rollback. I don't believe he was trying to say that no Characters were effectively rolled back.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

This reminds me of the early days of Everquest. Often crashes resulted in lost packets of information. This was when you could log on at all. Such crashes were fairly frequent in the first month and caused the company to give a free additional month of game time to subscribers. They didn't do a stress test, however, and didn't realize the impact a massive number of players would have upon their servers. Best this sort of thing happens in alpha testing so they can determine its cause and plan for fixes so this doesn't happen during the paid period.

Well, there may not have been a planned server rollback, but my main character was definitely "rolled back."

I'd had some great luck with drops, and spent many hours on Sunday and Monday Gathering mats, then Refining to progress my Crafting skills. I also finally took the time to place all the "broken party-dropped" recipes into a local bank so they were out of my view.

Come Tuesday, I logged in and had been teleported to the north, all my spent xp was refunded, all my Crafting Points earned were voided, all my Gathered and Refined mats were deleted, and even the broken recipes that I'd banked were back in my pack.

So I consider that a 2+ day rollback.

My question is, does logging in and out more frequently create any kind of "save point" to where you might not lose as much if this kind of thing happens again? I had been continuously logged in for quite a long time on Monday.

Absolutely.

In standard software parlance (I don't know about MMORPGs) a rollback affects everyone and everything affected by the software. Since some people have not experienced the effects, it would not be a rollback.

My two characters switched places (each is now in a settlement that they had never visited before), and I'm presuming lost some drops/harvests, but the one has been acting as bank and I couldn't tell you for sure since the equipment list was huge. The other one definitely lost stuff, but also got back a bunch of harvests I'd lost on Saturday during the Magical Mystery Evening Tour of random teleports, so I probably came out ahead on the deal, since it regained me the 72 smooth pelts I'd lost in that party.

Yeah, a rollback means you reset the server to previous save point. That's not what happened. What happened was we found a bug involving data that wasn't being saved correctly.

A rollback would be replacing the current data with archived data. This class of bug is probably failing to save data correctly, resulting in the old data being retained.

Like "leash", the effect is similar but the underlying reason which is the etymology of the name is different.

You've found a bug! That offers hope that yall will be able to fix it soon. I put in a bug report on Tuesdaynight because of this same issue of loosing several sessions worth of play- but not because of a crash. Simply I was "rolledback" by the server's unhappy troubles.

Do we know if the Vaults are also resetting? If we store stuff there, will it be safe from whatever it is keeps happening to our characters?

Scarab Sages Goblin Squad Member

I'm glad the bug has been found, too. I hope it's fairly easy to fix.

Goblin Squad Member

Yep, catching that bug will be good.
