Advice

Hey guys, I am seriously considering making a fighter/barbarian and I find that I am having difficulty deciding on how exactly I should go about this. I have really only done classes that had sepcific roles and plenty of direction in how to fufill this role like the Magus. I find that the fighter's freedom in deciding how the character functions is slightly daunting.

For this reason I would like some advice in how I can help make this character what I envison him to be. Also, as I am a relatively new player to pathfinder in general I would appreciate any other advice even loosely related to my concept.

So with that in mind here is what I am thinking for my character concept. I want to create a Norse warrior who fights with a longsword and a shield. So essentially a human ulfen, who would be the pathfinder equvalent to a Jomsviking. I was wondering if their was an effective way to multiclass as barbarian and still effectively use a sword and shield or if I shoulld abandon multiclassiing and focus purely on being a fighter? It would be really awesome if I could play the viking beserker effectively.

Thanks

P.S. this is for PFS

There is actually a fighter archetype for a viking if you are interested in that: viking

This is a blog post about a typical human sword and board fighter: linky

I'm no expert either but I have been mulling the same character Idea around in my head as well.

Liberty's Edge

Yeah, Viking seems the way to go here. They fit thematically, get Rage without multiclassing, and have bonuses with a shield.

If you are likely to be playing to at least 8th level or so the Ulfen Guard prestige class might be worth a look.

Since it's pfs you could go taldor and actually get the Ulfen Guard title too. Problem being you would have to try and intimidate your way through the taldor missions. Which may actually be fun.

I've heard that using improved shield bash to go two weapon fighting is a good way to spend feats effectively, having more attacks and keep the high shield bonus to ac.

Since you're new, don't forget to bring your copy of People Of The North to the table if you use the Viking archetype. Some PFS GMs aren't 100% strict about these things, but you don't want to have to sit out a game because some GM declares your character illegal since you don't have the PDF or Book with you.

Viking is really good if you just want to kill stuff. That can be quite useful (and fun), but in PFS play, theoretically, you're doing a fair bit of investigation, NPC interaction, etc.

Since this is PFS play, you might find it useful to have a more versatile character (more skill points and magic). You might consider:

A sword and shield Inquisitor. Worship Gorum if you want to be combat/battle oriented. Or worship Desna if you want to be more a happy-go-lucky traveler/adventurer. Although it's a sacrifice, for flavor, you can dip 1 level into Barbarian to pick up Rage and extra movement, or if you don't want to dip, consider the Anger Inquisition which gives you Rage Level-3 starting at Level 6 (or forget both if you don't care to Rage). Inquisitor makes you the all-around pocket tool - healing spells, other useful spells, decent combat, lots of relevant class skills AND lots of skill points to go with your class skills. You should be quite useful in all PFS scenarios.

A sword and shield Skald from the Advanced Class Guide playtest. More of a warrior poet in the Viking tradition. Decent skill points and skill selection (+ Bardic Lore), decent fighting, useful spells, and a Raging Song ability (if you go for that sort of thing). I haven't analyzed the class in any detail, but there was alot of favorable buzz. Downsides is that you may have to revise your character later this year when the ACG book comes out.

Another consideration... If you're like me, you might find yourself bored with a fighter. If you're used to having spells and abilities that require you to constantly consider your actions and what you can do (like with the Magus), you might find the relatively straightforward options of a fighter to be less than mentally engaging.

Good luck and have fun!

our dwarf shield ranger in our party is off to a good start, the problem is at low level you can two hand a shield to better effect because of the issues with hitting at low level. You might keep that in mind.

Thanks for the advice guys, I think I have a little more direction on where I want to go with this character. I will look into the viking archtype it may be what I am looking for. Thanks guys.
