Halfling Paladin Mount, why not a Giant Rabbit?

Advice

Hello, I'm going to play an halfling paladin in a new campaign and I decided to build a character deeply focused on the mount. Now since the Halfling deity has the rabbit as sacred animal I really liked the idea of having a giant (actually a 3x giant) rabbit at level 5. The GM has agreed to the concept, but we're both undecided on how to handle the statistics of such a mount. For the moment we decided to just use the Riding Dog statistics, but we're open to other solutions. Do you think that building the animal as a Rat with 3 times the Giant archetype would work?

Wow...a hare-raising concept. I like it.

In the long run, it may be better and easier to just go with riding dog stats. I consider the rest flavor or fluff.

I was going to suggest giant capybara, but though you can buy one, they don't seem to have stats.

Since it's an animal companion, I recommend just picking one of the existing options and refluffing it. Templates weren't really made for animal companions.

I concur as well, I would find an animal companion's statistics and then just refluff it into a giant rabbit.

Hey, there's a kangaroo companion. It's a bit underwhelming power-wise, though.

Are you looking for a bunny that boxes, kicks, headbutts, or bites?

The kangaroo looks cool but I don't think the kick attack could fit, maybe a slam or a bite attack would be a better idea. If it wasn't for the disease attack also the dire rat could have been a valid option, anyway I think this is a good way to look for a solution, thank you!

Its better to take an existing ac and re fluff it with attack changes. Something like kangaroo with its attacks chaged.

For the record there are rl rabbits that probably push into the small size catagory that probably are a good model dor your rabbit. Flemmish giant for example.

I think that is a really close fit. Having had rabbits I can assure you that they kick, headbutt, and bite. Never seen them box though. :) I saw a great video online of a kangaroo putting a choke-hold on another one and knocking it out cold. Did you also know that kangaroos are good swimmers? When they are confronted by dingos they will swim out a bit, turn around, and then drown the dingos by holding them underwater. Kangaroos have massive arms -- I don't know why PF gave them a STR of 11. Anyhow -- I like your bunny-rider.

I'd use the kangaroo stats too. I think they fit giant bunny better than kangaroo anyhow.

I'm yoinking this, just so you know. :)

Dire Rat's never get bigger then small anyway... and if you use one as an animal companion, you can just pick the +2 dex/con option instead of the 4th level advancment, and it doesn't get the disease.... not to mention if you look under dire rat in the animals and transport section of ultimate equipment, it states "However, dire rats raised in captivity can be trained as loyal pets and protectors. Pet dire rats do not have filth fever." ... so not hard to exclude it under that pretext.

Perhaps look at the Goblin Dog as a base? Its actually a rodent. Just lose the allergic reaction stuff, and you could use the animal companion stats as is. Though wouldn't be large enough to ride until level 4.

The rules suggest using the stats for a donkey rat for a capybara. Sorry if that's a bit off-topic, but honestly, capybara are ALWAYS on topic.

I didn't notice this detail, my GM read some of your advices and she told me that I can choose between the dog, the kangaroo and the dire rat. My intention is to have the animal since the first level and then let it become a paladin mount at level 4, so maybe I'll choose one of the other two.

Oh, good to know.

I gotta say, though, that Golarion capybaras are rather puny. The equipment list describes them as 50-pound

Quote:
Tiny white rodents are native to temperate swamps and coasts. They are common pets and livestock in some lands. They are also sometimes referred to as "donkey rats" due to their size.

when in real life they're two feet tall, four feet long, and average over 100 pounds. The donkey rat listing is a bit more on target; at least it lists them as Small.

You could just Re skin the Goblin Dog or Riding Dog. I believe those would basically be the equivalents to a Huge Rabbit.
