This is a thread for animal lovers. What pets do you own or want to own? I own two guinea pigs and a dog. The dog is named pirate, he is a shetland sheepdog and boring. The guines pigs are named bella and simba. Simba is fat, cuddly and all around fun. Bella is a brat.

I am owned by two cats. One is a 16-year old grumpy Himalayan named Andy and the other is a 5-month old hyper Savannah kitten named Akilah.

My siblings and I grew up having the occasional hamsters, gerbils, dogs, and a parakeet growing up, but we've had oodles of cats. Currently, I have "inherited" (long intra-family-"grar" story) my sister's family's three cats, all mixed-breeds. There are the two 5 yro sisters, Sprinkles (orange and white tabby) and Summer (all orange mackerel tabby), and their grumpy bite-y 15 yro "aunt" (no genetic relation), Nero (Maine Coon mix, long-haired brown mackerel tabby).

Liberty's Edge

Bawww, can I steal akilah? She sounds adorable!

We had dogs and cats both growing up but since moving from Texas to Tennessee we've given away all the cats and just have dogs now.

The current pack right now is:
Hunter (Male Blue Heeler/Pointer)
Ranger (Male Corgi/Collie)
Brutus and Bridgette (Male and Female purebred Boxers)
and Ace (Male Boxer/Black Lab)

Liberty's Edge

Boxers are great dogs, corgis are fun as hell. Never heard of a blue heeler.

Cats... so many cats :D

Cookie, Marble or Mackey as he gets called (Cookie's son), Blondie (Cookie's sister), Ishkabibble or Ishi (Blondie's adopted daughter), Sabbath, Nod (Sabbath's son), Mal aka Maleficent, Cap'n Mal, Malo, an Malley (Sabbath's son), Sisypuss, and finally Sweet Potato

As a masters student, I have kept leopard and crested geckos, but currently don't have any pets. I'd like to get a cat someday.

My mom has a new Shiz-tu puppy (Bailey), So I got to play with him over christmas break.

Liberty's Edge

Jawa, try getting a hedgehog. They need a tempature and a special diet, along with being uber skittish and nocturnal, but they are extremely cute and great pets once they bond to you. Laz is a cat horder, I am calling the ASPCA.

One dog, Titus, 14 y/o kerry beagle, technically he's not mine. While I was in the Navy my roommate at the time adopted him, with plans for his sister to watch him during deployments. That fell through and the only people we could find to care for him were my parents. Once I moved back home, he's been with me ever since. Unfortunately he has chronic renal failure. It set in a about 6 months ago and he's doing a little better now, but it's rough.

Liberty's Edge

That sucks! Hope he has a lot of fun with you! Beagles are cute

I have two dogs, each about 60 lbs. One is a hound/pit mix and the other is a boxer/pit mix. They're not the brightest bulbs on the tree, but the hound mix, Rosie, is my bestest girl. She always has to be near me. The other one, Buster, is more independent and standoffish (we think he was mistreated before we adopted him), but he does the cute, goofy stuff.

Silver Crusade

Quite a few dogs. I'm terrible with breeds, so FYI.

Princess growing up. She was a german shepherd. Died from too much chocolate, which as one of the guilty offenders made me sad as a child. Definitely one of my favorite animals, and snooty for a dog, I swear!

Daisy was next. I can't recall what breed she was, but a beautiful dog. Sadly she was hit by a car.

We had another dog after also named princess. Some kind of hairy breed thing with short legs. I was not a fan of her. We only had her for a few months, never quite fit in with the household. We had gotten her from some family friends who ended up taking her back. There was a story involved but for the life of me, I can't remember it right this moment.

Our next dog was named dusty. Golden retriever. That dog was just plain awesome, but way too rambunctious. Loved playing with her, protective of kids but too rough. My youngest sibling was born around that time and Dusty just turned out to be too much to handle. A family friend with a farm took her, died a few years back.

Currently back home we have two dogs. Princess (I know, I don't name 'em) and Pepper. A funny pair. Pepper is black lab and something else mixed, Princess is Shepherd and something else mixed. Quite the opposites. Princess is get up and go type while Pepper just likes to lay around.

Andy (the other cat) would love to be an only cat again. :) But Akilah is quite adorable. It's what makes her endearing when she's gotten on the counter for the thousandth time. Or plays with her sheep toy on the bed at 3 am.

Liberty's Edge

Eeehh, cats on the counter aren't a big issue cougar, Neither is a sheep toy on my bed. I don't care, just our dog is still around and hes no fun because he doesn't play.

A redhead and a blonde.

What?

snickersimba wrote:

He's not a normal beagle. Imagine a dog that looks exactly like a beagle, but it's the size of a golden retriever. There are other differences than just size, but at first glance he does look like a beagle that's had Animal Growth cast on him.

Liberty's Edge

Still, floppy ears!!! XD My guinea pig was napping on my chest last night, lot of fun

Snoring next to me on the couch right now is Lilly a 60 pound lab mix, black with a white chest and paws, that we rescued two years ago. She had mange, bacterial and fungal infections on her skin and was half bald and red with inflammation. Now she is active, happy, and incredibly smart. One of her favorite activities is to pull me on rollerblades. She can cover 2 miles in just over 8 minutes and I weight 190 lbs.

We also have two black and white (tuxedo) cats named Harry and Weasley. Yes, named after the famous ones. One rescued and one is a stray. Weasley loves Lilly and head boops her whenever he can.

We also foster kittens so at any given time we might have a litter upstairs.

Liberty's Edge

eak, If I ever meet you at a meeting, you are to bring lilly and weasley. If you do so, I will give you an entire tray of homeade choclate choclate cookies and a pan of caramel squares.

I hate to be a Negative Nancy on this thread, as I am also a pet/animal lover, but...
Be careful sharing your pets' names on a public forum, as they often comprise security questions and passwords. If you do share, make sure it can't compromise you.

Liberty's Edge

I highly doubt anyone here is dumb enough to do that. If we are smart enough to min max a TTRPG and tell a decent story behind it, I think we know basic internet security.

Silver Crusade

We have a german shepherd and a black lab/chow mix

Liberty's Edge

German shepards are adorable, I demand you give it to me. (I am kidding, please do not do that)

snickersimba wrote:

Apparently that's not their "official" name, but here you go

Liberty's Edge

Orthos, can I steal your dogs? I will pay you in cookies.

Six cats. The oldest is 18, and the youngest is (I think) somewhere around 6 or 7. All but one are rescues or needed a forever home when the owner was forced to move due to job relocation. We're also part of Murphy's Official Territory, but I don't know if that counts.

Two dogs, six indoor cats, three outside cats, 4 rats, three tree frogs, a lizard of some kind, and several fish.

That's why you shouldn't use the real answer to security questions: they become an easy-to-use back door by anyone who spends 20 minutes on your Facebook account! Make up some consistent fake answers to common questions, and keep track of them.

As for pets: I have two cats: a 16-year-old male orange tabby, and an 18-month old female black shorthair. Both are pound cats we adopted as kittens.

IRCC, tree frogs are nocturnal, and very vocal during their breeding season. How do you sleep through all of the amphibian romance?

~grins~ The Tree Frogs, the lizard, and the fish are my wife's pets. They are in her office, so I do not hear them most of the time.

As for the cats, I think they think of ME as their pet. Or slave.

They're not mine to negotiate, heh. The corgi mix belongs to my sister and the rest to my parents.

Even then, you'd need to get in line behind Scintillae, she's been asking the same thing for years.

Sharoth wrote:

This is standard.

Just Peeves.

We have a single cat that we rescued from my parent's other cats. She is very sweet, but doesn't stand up for herself, so she was at the bottom of the pecking order. As a single cat she's great and very happy!

We also have a 20 gallon tank of Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. We started with 6 sub adults. A year later, we traded all but 12 to a reptile pet store for a new 20 gallon tank. The roaches are great pets for toddlers.
-They don't get injured if you drop one.
-They don't bite.
-They don't carry transmittable diseases.
-They make noise.
-They are edible. (I recommend freezing sub-adults overnight, bake with a little olive oil and some seasoning, pull off the legs before you eat them. CRUNCHY!!)
-They eat vegetable scraps, so they are cheap to feed.
-If one gets stepped on, oops! You still have 199+ more.

Liberty's Edge

We have 7 kitties and a couple of tanks of fish.

10 axolotls

until recently eleven, then my favorite, the only gold albino I had died from some kind of infection that I noticed to late, which prevented her from eating.

2 dogs - a 3 yr old Burnese mountain dog; and an 8-year old mix. We think there is some Burner in the mix, but at the vet one time another dog owner said he saw some Australian (?) wolf hound in him. (Although not sure if that's really a breed.)

Both are pretty much carpets, and the Burner especially will let you do darn near anything around him and not even flinch.

We've had to step down our pet level since moving, sadly. We currently have a rescued Dachshund named Farley and an Okeetee-phase Corn Snake named Vincenza.

Liberty's Edge

Ichy, I am never letting you at my table. EVER. Axos are adorable, everyone here has amazing pets!

Until recently, I had eleven (twelve) cats: Morgan, Minerva, Mercury, Mattea, Molly, Moira, Millie, Marlo, Modi, Max, Miranda ... and Little Louie. :)

Wow, Vincenza is gorgeous! Is she a confirmed female?

Currently we have two cats and my sister has a hedgehog.

Liberty's Edge

thats awesome john!! Hedgehogs are super fun

We had a pure white cat called Daisy - she passed away last year she was very very old. She was my wife's cat. Even though don't think we should have cats as pets in Australia as they devastate native animal populations, I did love Daisy and much to my wife's annoyance Daisy had designated me as her human.

My daughters have been asking for a new pet, we have just had a baby so we are going to wait a year or two.

Spoilered to avoid derailing the purpose of the thread:

@8th Dwarf:
There are a lot of native Australian arthropods that make great pets. I did a quick search for "Insect pets Australia" and found a site that sells insects, arachnids, and isopods (millipedes and pillbugs). I find that arthropods are great pets for kids. Not only are they educational, but the kids lose (or never get) the "bugs are gross!" mentality that pervades much of the first world.

Regardless, if you can get something that's not invasive, that's best. My justification for keeping tropical roaches is that I live in New England. If they ever escape, they will surely die in November!

@SnickerSimba:
I don't take my Hissers gaming with me! ;) However, they may reside in the same room in which my gaming group meets. *evil grin* But I would never try to sneak them into food without someone knowing it. I might try to apply a LITTLE peer pressure to get someone to eat one, but not too hard. When my wife brought about 2 dozen cooked ones to a church fair, they were all eaten by the end.

Liberty's Edge

Wait, you live in NE too itchy? So do I! I would try a cooked one, just to be polite. However, I dislike bugs just by nature, Dwarf, get a hedgehog. Those are amazing. Itchy, what part of NE?

The Exchange

My sons have two guinea pigs, Puddles and Squeaky

Liberty's Edge

Aren't they fun jester? snuggly babies

SnowJade wrote:

She hasn't been checked by a vet but corn snakes are very easy to sex. There are distinct differences between the genders. She is all girl. :)
